For Apple’s built-in sleep tracking, the Apple Watch is the overnight sensor. Wear it to bed with Sleep Tracking enabled and it estimates your sleep duration and stages. The iPhone is where you set schedules and review detailed results; the iPad is useful for viewing and managing sleep data, but is not the main sleep sensor. Without an Apple Watch, an iPhone can provide a schedule-based estimate of time in bed—not the same watch-derived stage tracking.
The steps below reflect Apple’s current iOS 26 and watchOS-era guidance. Features and compatibility can vary by watch model, software version, region, and how the watch was set up.
What each Apple device does
| Device | Role in sleep tracking |
|---|---|
| Apple Watch | Collects overnight sensor data when worn with Sleep Tracking enabled. It estimates time asleep and stages such as Awake, REM, Core, and Deep. |
| iPhone | Sets sleep goals and schedules, configures Sleep Focus and alarms, and provides the main Health app charts and historical views. |
| iPad | Displays and organizes sleep data collected by Apple Watch or compatible sources, and can accept manual entries. It is best treated as a larger dashboard, not an overnight sensor. |
Apple’s overview of the setup and tracking requirements is in its Sleep tracking with Apple Watch guide. Its Health app guide explains how Health brings together information from Apple devices and compatible third-party sources.

What you need before you start
- An iPhone compatible with your Apple Watch, with current iOS and watchOS software. Current Apple Watch models such as Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3 require iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later; older combinations have their own requirements. Check Apple’s current compatibility details before buying or pairing.
- An Apple Watch paired with the iPhone and configured for your intended Health profile.
- Track Sleep with Apple Watch enabled.
- At least 30% battery before bed, and at least one hour of wear to collect sleep data. These are minimum conditions Apple specifies, not a promise of a complete or accurate night.
- A comfortable, secure fit so the sensors stay in contact with your wrist.
Apple’s general Sleep Tracking feature is available on watchOS 8 or later, but features such as Sleep Score and Vitals may require newer software or hardware. Availability can also vary by country, age, language, and watch setup. For example, Apple says Sleep is unavailable on watches set up using Apple Watch For Your Kids (formerly Family Setup).

Set up sleep tracking on your iPhone
1. Open Sleep in Health
- Open the Health app.
- Tap Search at the bottom right, then tap Sleep.
- If you see Get Started under Set Up Sleep, tap it and follow the prompts.
Apple’s current iPhone instructions are in Set up a sleep schedule.
2. Choose a sleep goal and schedule
Set a target for the hours you want to sleep. This is a personal target, not a medical determination of how much sleep you need. Apple’s Sleep Score also uses sleep duration, so the goal influences how the system presents progress.
Create a schedule by choosing the active days, bedtime, wake time, and alarm settings. You can customize the alarm sound, volume, haptics, and snooze, and add a Wind Down period. Multiple schedules can help with different routines, such as weekdays and weekends or rotating shifts. A schedule provides a framework for reminders, alarms, Focus, and comparisons; it does not measure sleep quality by itself.
3. Set up Sleep Focus
On iPhone, go to Settings → Focus → Sleep. Sleep Focus can limit interruptions and simplify the Lock Screen and Home Screen during the period you choose. Keep the distinction clear:
- Sleep schedule sets planned bed and wake times.
- Sleep Focus manages interruptions and device behavior.
- Sleep Tracking lets the Apple Watch collect overnight data.
They work together, but enabling one does not mean the others are configured.

4. Enable Apple Watch tracking
During setup, turn on Track Sleep with Apple Watch. If you paired the watch later, check the Sleep settings in the Watch app on iPhone and enable tracking there. Also confirm Sleep Tracking in the Sleep app or settings on the watch if results are missing.
Wear and prepare the Apple Watch overnight
- Charge the watch to at least 30% before bed. If it runs out of power, it cannot record the rest of the night.
- Wear it snugly enough for sensor contact, but not so tight that it causes pressure, numbness, or irritation.
- Allow at least an hour of wear for sleep data collection; longer wear is needed to represent a full night.
- Consider enabling Charging Reminders at Watch app on iPhone → My Watch → Sleep → Charging Reminders. Apple says these can remind you to charge before Wind Down and notify you when charging is complete.
A practical routine is to charge while showering, working, or getting ready for bed rather than waiting until bedtime. If overnight tracking matters, charging speed and battery life matter as much as sensors. A larger watch may last longer but can feel bulkier in bed; a smaller one may be more comfortable. Choose a band that holds the watch in place without uncomfortable pressure.
View your sleep data
On iPhone
- Open Health.
- Tap Search → Sleep.
- Review the main chart, then tap Show More Sleep Data for additional categories.
Health can show daily, weekly, monthly, and six-month views. Depending on available data and features, you may see sleep duration, stages, goal progress, and comparisons with measures such as heart rate and respiratory rate.
On iPad
- Open Health.
- Open the sidebar or use Search, then choose Sleep.
- Choose a time range and tap a day to inspect its details.
- Tap Show More Sleep Data for additional categories.
You can use Add Data to enter sleep manually. A manual record or data viewed on iPad is not the same as a night measured by an Apple Watch. See Apple’s iPad Sleep data guide.
On Apple Watch
Open the Sleep app and scroll with the Digital Crown to review the previous night and recent averages. Apple says the watch can show recent sleep information covering the previous 14 days, including stages, time asleep, and sleep duration. The exact display depends on the software and data available.

Understand the numbers
Time in bed is not time asleep
Do not treat these measures as interchangeable. Time in bed describes a period spent in bed or a scheduled/recorded interval. Time asleep is the system’s estimate of sleep during that interval. Time awake is estimated waking time. Your sleep goal is a target, not a measurement. An iPhone schedule can help estimate time in bed, but it does not supply Apple Watch-style stage data.

Apple Watch classifies periods as Awake, REM, Core, or Deep. These are algorithmic estimates based on watch sensors and movement. They are not direct readings of brain activity and are not equivalent to a clinical sleep study such as polysomnography. Use stages to notice broad patterns over time, not to diagnose a disorder or judge a single night as medically significant.
Sleep Score
Apple’s Sleep Score is a consumer wellness score from 0 to 100. Apple describes its components as sleep duration (up to 50 points), bedtime consistency (up to 30), and interruptions (up to 20). Consistency considers the previous 13 nights; interruptions reflect the quality and duration of periods when you were awake. It is Apple’s scoring system, not a clinical grade or diagnosis.
Vitals and other overnight measures
With a compatible watch and sufficient overnight data, the Vitals app may show typical ranges for measures such as heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, sleep duration, and—where available—Blood Oxygen. Hardware, software, and regional rules affect availability. In the United States, Blood Oxygen access in Vitals has restrictions for certain watches purchased on or after January 18, 2024, depending on qualifying part numbers. See Apple’s watch health-features guide for current details.
Change a schedule or skip a night
To change only the next wake-up, open Health → Search → Sleep, tap Edit under the next schedule, adjust the bedtime, wake time, or alarm, and tap Done. This temporary change applies to the next wake-up; the recurring schedule resumes afterward.

To edit a recurring schedule, go to Health → Search → Sleep, scroll to Your Schedule, tap Full Schedule & Options, then tap Edit beside the schedule you want to change. Adjust days, times, or alarm settings and tap Done. Apple’s schedule editing guide covers both temporary and recurring changes.
If you do not want the next alarm or Sleep Focus on one night, use the next-wake-up control or skip the next sleep alarm from the Alarms app on Apple Watch. Turning off a schedule, changing an alarm, and disabling Sleep Tracking are different actions; choose the one that matches what you want to stop.

No sleep data appears
Check these items in order:
- You wore the Apple Watch overnight, for at least one hour.
- Track Sleep with Apple Watch is enabled.
- The watch was paired with the iPhone you are checking, and you are in the correct Health profile.
- The watch had at least 30% battery before bed and did not die overnight.
- The fit was secure and comfortable enough to maintain sensor contact.
- You are viewing the correct date and have allowed devices time to sync.
- Health permissions and data sources are enabled if you use multiple apps or trackers.
- The iPhone and watch are updated and compatible with the features you expect.
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance highlights battery, wear time, tracking settings, and fit as important collection conditions.
There is time in bed but no stages
A sleep record can exist without watch-derived stage data. It may have come from a schedule, a manual entry, or a third-party app that provides duration only. The watch may not have been worn long enough, Sleep Tracking may be off, or the source device/software may not support stages. Check the record’s source in Health before assuming the Apple Watch captured a full night.

Sleep stages are estimates and can be affected by movement, fit, charging gaps, and unusual sleep patterns. Look for repeated broad trends rather than reacting to one chart. If you have persistent symptoms or suspect a sleep disorder, talk to a healthcare professional; a consumer wearable cannot diagnose it.

Several apps contribute conflicting records
Third-party apps and devices may write overlapping sleep entries to Health, sometimes with different definitions of sleep duration. Review data sources and permissions in Health, and avoid comparing records as if they were collected by the same sensor or method.
Can you track sleep without an Apple Watch?
You can set an iPhone sleep schedule, bedtime reminder, alarm, and Sleep Focus without an Apple Watch. Apple describes iPhone schedule-based information as an estimate of periods when you are in bed intending to sleep; it is not the same as watch-based overnight sensing and does not provide equivalent sleep-stage estimates.
If you have no watch, options include manually adding sleep in Health or using a compatible third-party wearable or bedside device that can write data to Health. Data quality, permissions, and the types of metrics vary. On iPad, you can view and manage data, but Apple’s setup flow centers on iPhone, and the iPad should not be treated as a replacement overnight sensor.

Is an Apple Watch worth buying for sleep tracking?
If you already own a compatible Apple Watch, try Apple’s built-in tracking first: it integrates with Health and does not require a separate sleep-tracking subscription. If you are buying primarily for sleep, consider whether you can tolerate wearing a watch overnight and manage its charging routine. The watch also makes more sense if you want notifications, fitness features, and other health tools in the same device.
As of August 2026, Apple’s US store listed the Apple Watch SE 3 from $249, Series 11 from $399, and Ultra 3 from $799. Prices, configurations, and availability can change; check Apple’s current Watch store. All three can track sleep, so paying more is not automatically a way to get better sleep-stage estimates. The SE 3 is the lower-cost route to Apple Watch sleep tracking; Series 11 is a mainstream all-purpose option; Ultra 3 is aimed at users who also value a rugged design and longer stated battery life, but its larger case may be less comfortable in bed.
A screen-free ring such as Oura may suit someone who dislikes sleeping in a watch, but it adds another app ecosystem and an ongoing membership. Oura lists US membership at $5.99 per month or $69.99 per year before applicable taxes for Gen 3 and newer rings, with one month included for new members; see its membership details. A separate tracker is less appealing if you are happy with Apple Watch data and want to avoid a subscription.
Neither an Apple Watch nor a ring replaces medical testing. If your goal is to investigate persistent sleep problems or symptoms, consult a healthcare professional rather than relying on a consumer score or stage chart.
