To see today’s steps on Apple Watch, open the Activity app, scroll past the Move, Exercise, and Stand rings, and read Total Steps. Apple Watch counts steps automatically while you wear it, so you do not need to start a walking workout for ordinary daily tracking.
How to check your steps on Apple Watch
- Press the Digital Crown.
- Open Activity.
- Scroll down below the three Activity rings.
- Read Total Steps. You can also see Total Distance and other activity details.
The exact visual layout may differ between watchOS versions. Apple’s current guide covers watchOS 26, but the important path remains Activity → scroll down → Total Steps. See Apple’s guide to tracking daily activity with Apple Watch.

Do you need to start a walking workout?
No. Apple Watch can count ordinary daily steps without an active workout. Start Workout → Outdoor Walk when you want a separate walking-session record with details such as duration, pace, route, heart rate, or workout distance.
Starting a workout can make a deliberate walk easier to analyze, but it is not a requirement for the watch to count your steps.
Can Apple Watch count steps without your iPhone nearby?
Yes. Apple says Apple Watch can track activity goals while disconnected from the paired iPhone, Wi-Fi, and cellular service. Activity data can synchronize to the iPhone later when the devices reconnect. Some network-dependent functions still require Wi-Fi, cellular service, or the iPhone, and feature availability varies by model, region, and language. Read Apple’s explanation of using Apple Watch without an iPhone nearby.

| Metric | What it represents |
|---|---|
| Steps | An estimated number of walking steps. |
| Walking distance | An estimated distance associated with walking activity. |
| Move ring | Active calories burned. |
| Exercise ring | Minutes of qualifying exercise or brisk activity. |
| Stand ring | Hours in which you stood and moved for at least one minute. |
Steps do not appear as one of the three main Activity rings. You can close all three rings without reaching a particular step total because Apple’s system does not use 10,000 steps as its default Activity goal.

How to ask Siri about activity
On supported Apple Watch models, software versions, languages, and regions, Siri can answer activity questions such as “How far have I walked today?” or “How are my Activity Rings?” Exact responses to step-count questions are not identical on every device, so the Activity app remains the most dependable way to check the number. Apple lists supported health and fitness Siri queries in its Apple Watch guide.
Why your steps may be missing or lower than expected
The watch was not on your wrist
Apple Watch needs to be worn to measure wrist movement. It cannot record wrist-based activity during periods when it was left off.
The watch has not synchronized
Keep the watch and iPhone near each other, make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled, and open Activity, Fitness, or Health to allow the data to update. If the total remains stale, restart both devices and check again.

You are checking the wrong metric
The Move ring shows active calories, not steps. On the watch, scroll below the rings; on iPhone, open Health → Browse → Activity → Steps.
The fit is poor
Wear the watch securely and comfortably. A loose or inconsistent fit can reduce the quality of wrist-motion and heart-rate measurements, although no fit guarantees a perfect count.
Multiple devices are contributing data
Health may combine step records from the iPhone, Apple Watch, and compatible third-party sources. If the total looks unexpected, open the Steps details in Health and inspect the listed data sources.
The software is outdated
Update the iPhone and Apple Watch when compatible updates are available. Apple recommends keeping Apple Watch current for the latest features and security fixes; its current user documentation references watchOS 26. Start with Apple’s Apple Watch support page.

How accurate is the Apple Watch step count?
Apple Watch estimates steps using its motion sensors; the displayed number is not an exact measurement. Counts can differ from an iPhone, treadmill, or another wearable because the devices may be worn or carried differently and may use different algorithms.
For useful day-to-day comparisons, use the same device and wear it in a consistent way. Treat the total as a tracking estimate rather than a medically guaranteed measurement. Apple Watch activity features are not a substitute for medical advice or a medical device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you put steps on the watch face?
The built-in Activity complication generally emphasizes rings and other activity metrics rather than offering total steps as a universal default complication. To see steps at a glance, you may need a compatible third-party app and complication, depending on your watchOS version.
Recommended Free Tools
That is optional: you do not need another app or purchase to view the built-in total in Activity or Health. A third-party complication can add convenience but may involve permissions, a subscription or one-time cost, watchOS compatibility issues, and a step total that differs from Apple’s own Health data.

Do you need an Apple Watch to count steps?
No. An iPhone can use its built-in sensors to count steps and related walking data, provided you carry the phone. Open Health → Browse → Activity → Steps to view the result.
An Apple Watch is more convenient if you want wrist-based tracking while the phone is in your pocket or elsewhere, plus activity rings, walking workouts, and other smartwatch functions. If step counting is your only goal, buying a watch is not necessary.
If you are buying an Apple Watch mainly for steps
Prioritize compatibility with your iPhone, a comfortable fit, enough battery life for your routine, and the features you will actually use. As of August 2026, Apple’s U.S. prices were observed from $249 for Apple Watch SE 3, $399 for Series 11, and $799 for Ultra 3; prices vary by configuration, taxes, and availability. Check Apple’s current buying page before purchasing.
- SE 3: The most economical current Apple option for wrist-based step tracking.
- Series 11: Better suited to buyers who also want a broader health and smartwatch feature set.
- Ultra 3: Difficult to justify for basic steps alone; its rugged design, larger battery, GPS, and adventure features are aimed at specialized users.
Current models such as Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3 require an iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later. Compatibility differs across generations, so verify the requirements for the exact model. Cellular service is not needed for step counting.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see yesterday’s steps?
Yes. Use Fitness → Summary → activity history and select the date, or use Health → Browse → Activity → Steps for the detailed step record.
Why does my iPhone show a different number from my Apple Watch?
The devices may have recorded movement at different times or locations, and Health may combine data from multiple sources. Check the Steps data details and sources in Health before comparing totals.
Does carrying my iPhone improve Apple Watch step tracking?
Not as a requirement. Apple Watch can track activity without the iPhone nearby. Carrying the iPhone does allow the phone itself to contribute its own walking data, which can produce a different combined Health total.
