If your Pixel Watch runs Wear OS 4 or later, use Google’s Transfer watch feature. It is designed to move the existing watch to a new Android phone without a factory reset. The old phone remains paired until the transfer succeeds.
Before you start
- Keep the old phone, new phone, and watch together until setup is complete.
- Do not erase, trade in, or factory-reset the old phone yet.
- Install or update the Google Pixel Watch app on the new phone.
- Use the Google Account associated with the watch if you want to retain the existing account-linked setup.
- Turn on Bluetooth, keep the watch near the new phone, and charge the devices. Placing the watch on its charger is preferable.
- If you use an LTE model, have your carrier details available and note whether the new phone uses the same number.
A Pixel Watch requires a compatible Android phone and the Google Pixel Watch app. Requirements vary by watch generation, Android version, region, and software. For example, Google’s current Pixel Watch 4 information lists Android 10 or later for that model; do not treat that as a universal requirement for every Pixel Watch.
Back up the watch before moving it
The supported transfer is intended to preserve saved settings and watch data, but a backup is sensible before troubleshooting or resetting anything. Google’s backup process requires Wi-Fi and charging:
- Connect the watch to Wi-Fi.
- Place it on its charger.
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app on the phone.
- Tap Google → Backup → Turn on.
Google says a backup can take up to a few days, so start this well before you hand over or erase the old phone. It is not necessarily an immediate, last-minute backup.

Transfer the watch without resetting it
Use this route when the watch shows Transfer watch and the old pairing still works.
Start from the watch
- Wake and unlock the watch if necessary.
- Swipe down from the watch face.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap Transfer watch.
- On the new phone, open or install the Google Pixel Watch app.
- Choose the option to add or set up a watch, then follow the prompts.
- Compare the pairing code on the watch with the code on the phone and confirm that they match.
- Sign in to the same Google Account if requested.
- Tap Done when setup finishes.
Start from the old phone instead
If the watch-side menu is difficult to find, use the alternative route documented by Google:
Google Pixel Watch app → System → Transfer watch → Start Transfer → Done

Then complete pairing in the Pixel Watch app on the new phone. Menu labels can vary with the watch model, Wear OS version, app version, and language.
What happens during and after the transfer?
The old phone should not unpair until the handoff succeeds. Google’s supported workflow is designed to retain the watch’s saved settings and existing data, avoiding the full rebuild associated with a factory reset.
That does not guarantee identical, instant restoration of every piece of content. Watch faces may take time to synchronize, and apps or settings may continue resyncing after setup. Do not assume that every third-party app’s local state, downloaded media, or authentication session will survive exactly as it appeared on the old phone.

Fitbit history is separate from the Bluetooth pairing process. It is associated with your Fitbit account, so changing the phone is not the same thing as migrating or deleting your Fitbit history.

For an LTE Pixel Watch with cellular service enabled, the transfer checks whether the new phone has the same phone number:
- Same number: the watch can remain twinned with that number.
- Different number: the setup may prompt you to configure twinning with the new number.
This is not the same as transferring the phone’s SIM or eSIM. Watch LTE depends on your carrier’s wearable plan, number-sharing or “twinning” arrangement, eSIM support, and activation rules. A phone-number change may therefore require additional carrier setup. Google cannot guarantee identical LTE behavior across every carrier or country.

If “Transfer watch” is missing
Check these possibilities before resetting:
- Verify the watch’s Wear OS version. Google’s documented no-reset process requires Wear OS 4 or later.
- Update the watch, the old phone, the new phone, and the Google Pixel Watch app where possible.
- Look in the Pixel Watch app rather than Android’s ordinary Bluetooth settings.
- Confirm that the app is signed in to the intended Google Account.
- Restart the watch and both phones, keep Bluetooth enabled, and try again with the devices close together.
- Consider whether the watch is stuck in an incomplete pairing state or was already disconnected incorrectly.
Do not assume that every older Pixel Watch must be reset. First confirm the watch generation, Wear OS version, app state, and whether the old phone is still available. If the feature genuinely is not supported or cannot be made available, use the backup-and-reset fallback.

Some connection errors occur when pairing with a phone that was factory-reset, or when trying to reconnect to a phone the watch previously used without first completing a transfer to another phone.
Use Google’s documented recovery sequence:
- Back up the watch if it is still accessible.
- Factory-reset the watch.
- Pair it with the new phone through the Google Pixel Watch app.
- Restore the available backup when setup offers that option.
This is the fallback, not the first step. A factory reset erases the watch’s current local state, and restoration depends on having a sufficiently recent usable backup. Apps, settings, watch faces, and other content may need time to reinstall or synchronize. LTE activation may also need to be checked again.

If the old phone is lost, broken, or already erased
Try setting up the watch from the Google Pixel Watch app on the new phone. If the watch remains associated with its previous pairing and cannot be adopted, the practical recovery path is to reset it and restore the most recent available backup during setup.
If no usable backup exists, locally stored settings or data may not be recoverable. Do not delete your Google Account or Fitbit account as a pairing fix; those accounts are not interchangeable with the watch’s local pairing state.
Moving from a Pixel phone to another Android brand
You do not necessarily need a Pixel phone. A Pixel Watch generally works with a compatible Android phone through the Google Pixel Watch app, but exact support depends on the watch generation, Android version, region, and required Google services. Confirm the requirements for your specific model before switching brands. The official material used here is Android-focused; do not assume iPhone support.

Check these features after setup
- Notifications and notification permissions.
- Calls, messages, and contacts.
- Google Wallet and any required security verification.
- Fitbit synchronization and account sign-in.
- Watch faces, tiles, complications, and app installation.
- LTE calls and data while Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are unavailable.
- Charging, battery behavior, and permissions for the Pixel Watch app.
Allow time for watch faces and other content to synchronize before concluding that something was lost.
If you are selling or giving away the watch
That is a different process from moving your own watch to a new phone. Before handing it to another person, remove your personal data and follow Google’s sale, exchange, and transfer instructions. In particular, delete the watch’s eSIM when applicable. Simply powering off the watch or leaving it unpaired is not enough.
Same-watch transfer versus backup restoration

Google says backups can include watch data, settings, watch faces, messages, and alarms when restoring to another watch. That replacement-watch restoration path should not be confused with the no-reset process for moving the same watch between phones.
