To turn on a Fitbit Sense or Sense 2, press and hold the side button until the watch vibrates. To turn it off, open Settings → Shut down and confirm. A frozen watch needs a restart instead: hold the side button for about 10 seconds, until the Fitbit logo appears.
These actions are different from simply waking a sleeping screen. Use the steps below to choose the right one and troubleshoot a watch that stays black.
Turn on a Fitbit Sense or Sense 2
- Find the physical button on the side of the watch.
- Press and hold it until the watch vibrates or the Fitbit logo appears.
- Release the button and wait for the clock face to load.
This works after either Sense model has been shut down. If the watch was already on and only its screen was asleep, a brief button press or a double-tap may wake the display instead. Google’s Sense power instructions cover both models.

Turn off a Fitbit Sense
- Open the Settings app on the watch.
- Scroll to and tap Shut down.
- Confirm the shutdown when prompted.
- Wait until the screen goes completely dark.
The menu uses the label Shut down, rather than “Power off.” Shutting down does not delete stored activity data. The Settings path is the same on Sense and Sense 2.

Shut down, restart, or just wake the screen?
- Shut down completely powers off the watch. Use this when storing it or leaving it unused for an extended time.
- Restart reboots the watch to troubleshoot a freeze, sync issue, unresponsive controls, missing notifications, or similar problem. It does not delete activity data.
- Wake the screen only turns on the display; it does not power on a watch that has been shut down or reboot the device.
If the watch seems active but the display is dark, try briefly pressing the button or double-tapping the screen. You can also check Screen Wake in quick settings. On the original Sense, swipe right from the clock face to open quick settings; on Sense 2, swipe down. Screen-wake behavior is separate from the watch’s power state. Restart a frozen Fitbit Sense
- Connect the watch to its Fitbit charging cable.
- Press and hold the side button for about 10 seconds.
- Release it when the Fitbit logo appears, then allow the watch to restart.
A restart is a troubleshooting step, not a factory reset, and should preserve activity data. It may help with an unresponsive screen or controls, failed syncing, missing activity data or notifications, and reboot loops; it is not a guaranteed fix for every fault. See Google’s restart instructions.

If the screen stays black or the watch will not turn on
- Attach the correct charger. Use the magnetic cable intended for your Sense model and check that it is securely attached to the charging contacts on the watch’s back.
- Use a wall power source. For a black-screen recovery test, connect the charger to a standard wall outlet or safety-certified USB wall charger, rather than relying on a computer USB port.
- Leave it charging for 60 minutes. A fully depleted battery can take several minutes to show anything on screen. When the connection is working, the charge percentage should appear.
- Check the connection. Inspect the charger pins and watch contacts for residue or obstruction. Clean away sweat, lotion, or debris, and make sure the cable stays attached.
- Try a restart while it is connected. Hold the side button for about 10 seconds and release when the Fitbit logo appears.
Google recommends the one-hour wall-outlet charge for a totally black device. If there is still no response after checking the charger and contacts, contact Fitbit or Google support. Avoid charging with damaged or visibly defective equipment. Google’s black-screen troubleshooting guide has additional checks.

To check charging, attach the model-specific magnetic cable to the port on the back; the charge percentage should appear on screen. If the charger will not stay attached, check for debris and inspect its pins. Do not assume charging cables are interchangeable between Fitbit models. See Google’s Sense charging guidance.

Avoid these common mistakes
- Do not use a 10-second button hold as the normal shutdown method; it is the restart procedure. Use Settings → Shut down to power off.
- Do not assume a dark screen means the watch is off. Try waking the display before troubleshooting power.
- Do not look for a “Power off” menu item if the watch offers Shut down.
- Do not factory-reset the watch as an early response to a simple freeze or power problem. A factory reset is different from a restart and should not be treated as data-preserving.
- Do not push paper clips or other objects into openings in the watch; some openings are sensors and probing them can cause damage.
