To call for help now, press and hold the side button—the button below the Digital Crown—and drag Emergency Call to the right. To make a call automatically by holding the button through a countdown, turn on Hold Side Button to Dial in Settings → SOS on the watch, or in Watch → My Watch → Emergency SOS on your iPhone. Emergency SOS is accessed from the side button; automatic dialing is a separate setting. See Apple’s Emergency SOS instructions.

Use Emergency SOS on Apple Watch now

The standard SOS controls use the side button, not the Digital Crown. On Apple Watch Ultra models, the Action button is a separate button; the procedure below uses the side button.

  • Digital Crown: the rotating crown on the side of the watch.
  • Side button: the button below the Digital Crown.
  • Action button: an additional button on Apple Watch Ultra models.

Call using the Emergency Call slider

  1. Press and hold the side button until the available sliders appear.
  2. Drag Emergency Call to the right.
  3. Wait for the call to connect and speak with the emergency-services operator.

The watch calls the relevant emergency number for your location—for example, 911 in the United States. The steps after the call begins can differ by region; some places may require an additional keypad action. Apple describes the slider and regional behavior in its Apple Watch emergency-calling guide.

Call by holding through the countdown

If automatic dialing is enabled, keep holding the side button through the warning and countdown. The watch calls when the countdown ends. It plays a warning sound even when Silent Mode is on, so use the slider if you need to place the call without that countdown warning.

Turn automatic dialing on or off

The setting controls whether holding the side button through the countdown places a call automatically. Menu wording can vary slightly with watchOS version; look for the side-button option under SOS or Emergency SOS.

On Apple Watch

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap SOS.
  3. Tap Hold Side Button.
  4. Turn on the side-button dialing option to enable automatic calls, or turn it off to disable them.

On the paired iPhone

  1. Open the Watch app.
  2. Tap My Watch.
  3. Tap Emergency SOS.
  4. Turn Hold Side Button to Dial on or off.

With automatic dialing on, you can call without dragging the slider, but an accidental long press is more likely to place a call. With it off, you must drag Emergency Call to place a manual call; that slider remains available. Apple documents both paths in its SOS settings guide.

Check that your watch can connect

Starting SOS does not guarantee that a call can connect. Standard Emergency SOS needs a cellular connection or Wi-Fi Calling with internet access through the watch or a nearby iPhone. A GPS-only watch generally relies on a nearby iPhone when it has no independent connection. A GPS + Cellular model may call without the iPhone in many locations, but usable coverage, carrier compatibility and activation, network support, and local conditions still matter. See Apple’s connection requirements.

  • If you have a GPS model: keep the paired iPhone nearby when you may need to place an emergency call away from Wi-Fi.
  • If you have a GPS + Cellular model: check that cellular service is activated and supported by your carrier; the watch cannot guarantee a call in a dead zone or unsupported region.
  • If neither cellular nor Wi-Fi Calling with internet is available: ordinary SOS may not connect. Satellite SOS is a separate, limited feature, not a fallback available on every watch.

Apple documents satellite emergency calling for Apple Watch Ultra 3 when the user is outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, where the feature is available and the watch has a line of sight to a satellite. Availability depends on model and region. Do not assume that a different Apple Watch can send an SOS by satellite; see Apple’s satellite and emergency-calling guidance.

For international travel, Apple says emergency calling is supported on Apple Watch Series 5 or later GPS + Cellular models, Apple Watch SE or later GPS + Cellular models, and all Apple Watch Ultra models, subject to country and regional availability. The watch connects to local emergency services, but location transmission and emergency-contact text notifications are not guaranteed everywhere. Check Apple’s country and calling guidance before relying on the feature abroad.

Set up Medical ID and emergency contacts

  2. Open Medical ID and choose to create or edit it.
  3. Add relevant medical details and at least one emergency contact.
4. Review the sharing options, including Share During Emergency Call if offered in your region.

Medical ID sharing depends on location and support. Apple’s cited watch documentation specifies the United States and Canada for certain sharing when calling or texting 911 or using Emergency SOS. You can view Medical ID on the watch by pressing and holding the side button, then dragging Medical ID to the right. See Apple’s Medical ID guide.

After an SOS call ends, the watch can notify emergency contacts and share your location; for a period after SOS begins, it may provide location updates. Availability varies by region. Automatic notifications may not work if Messages has been deleted or is not selected as the device’s text-messaging app. Location sharing can continue until you choose Stop Sharing in the follow-up notification. Apple explains these details in its Emergency SOS support article.

Turn on Fall Detection

Fall Detection is a separate automatic safety feature, not a setting required for manual Emergency SOS. Apple lists it for Apple Watch Series 4 or later and Apple Watch SE or later.

Enable it on the watch

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap SOS, then Fall Detection.
  3. Turn on Fall Detection.

Enable it from iPhone

  1. Open the Watch app and tap My Watch.
  2. Tap Emergency SOS, then Fall Detection.
  3. Turn it on and choose Always on or Only on during workouts, where offered.

Apple says that after a detected hard fall, if the wearer remains immobile for approximately one minute, the watch begins a 30-second countdown and may call emergency services automatically. Wrist Detection must be enabled for automatic emergency calling after a fall; find it at Settings → Passcode → Wrist Detection. Fall Detection can miss falls or mistake high-impact movement for one, so it is an aid rather than a guarantee. See Apple’s Fall Detection guidance and its setup instructions.

Understand Crash Detection

Crash Detection is another distinct feature. On supported watches, a severe car-crash alert gives the wearer an opportunity to respond; if they do not respond during the alert period, the watch can initiate an emergency call. Apple lists support for Apple Watch Series 8 or later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation or later), and Apple Watch Ultra or later. It is not available on every Apple Watch. Details are in Apple’s Emergency SOS and Crash Detection instructions.

Stop an accidental SOS call

Before the call is placed

If the countdown has started but the watch has not called, release the side button to stop the process.

After the call connects

Do not hang up. Wait for an emergency-services responder to answer and explain that the call was accidental and no help is needed. This helps avoid leaving responders uncertain about whether assistance is required. Apple gives this advice in its emergency-calling instructions.

Troubleshoot SOS and safety features

  • The call does not connect: check for cellular service or Wi-Fi Calling with internet, and whether a paired iPhone is nearby if your watch depends on it. A cellular watch also needs compatible service and network support.
  • You are outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage: ordinary SOS may not work. Satellite SOS is documented for Apple Watch Ultra 3 only, subject to regional availability and satellite visibility.
  • Emergency contacts were not notified: confirm contacts are listed in Medical ID and check that Messages is installed and selected as the text-messaging app. Regional support also affects notifications.
  • Fall Detection does not call automatically: confirm Fall Detection and Wrist Detection are on. The feature may not detect every fall, and automatic calling depends on the watch detecting a fall and the wearer remaining immobile.
  • You are traveling: local emergency numbers, international calling, location sharing, Medical ID sharing, and satellite availability vary. Check Apple’s regional guidance.

For a wearer’s everyday preparedness, keep the watch charged and wear it properly, and do not treat any automatic detection feature as a substitute for calling for help when able.
