You can raise Apple Watch brightness either on the watch or in the Apple Watch app on your paired iPhone. On the watch, go to Settings → Display & Brightness. On iPhone, open the Apple Watch app → My Watch → Display & Brightness. If the screen still looks dim, check whether it is in its wrist-down Always On state or whether the issue is actually how long the display stays awake.
Turn up brightness on your Apple Watch
- Wake the watch and press the Digital Crown to open the app list or Home Screen.
- Open Settings, then tap Display & Brightness.
- Under Brightness, tap the brighter part of the control or turn the Digital Crown to raise the level.
The brightness control is near the top of this screen. Adjust it until the display is comfortable to read. This is usually the quickest method if the watch is responsive and you can see its screen well enough to navigate. Apple documents this path in its Apple Watch display guide.
Adjust brightness from your iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone paired with the watch.
- Tap My Watch, then tap Display & Brightness.
- Move the brightness control to the desired level.
This can be easier if the watch display is hard to read or its touchscreen is difficult to use. The control in the Watch app changes the paired Apple Watch’s display brightness, not the iPhone’s own screen brightness. If you have more than one watch paired, check that the intended watch is selected before changing settings. See Apple’s guide to changing Apple Watch settings.
Can you change brightness in Control Center?
Apple’s current instructions put display brightness in Settings → Display & Brightness on the watch or in the corresponding section of the iPhone’s Watch app. The current Control Center guide lists shortcuts such as Wi‑Fi, Focus, Theater Mode, flashlight, volume and text size, but not a general display-brightness slider. In current watchOS, press the side button to open Control Center; older watchOS versions used that button differently.

If the watch still looks dim
Wake the display fully
On models with Always On, the watch face can remain visible in a dimmed state while your wrist is down. That is different from the brighter active display. Raise your wrist, tap the screen, press a button or turn the Digital Crown to wake it. Always On is model-dependent and, for example, is not supported on Apple Watch SE (2nd generation). Apple explains the display’s wake behavior in its guide to Apple Watch buttons and gestures.
Check Theater Mode and Low Power Mode
Theater Mode can stop the display from waking when you raise your wrist. In current watchOS, open Control Center with the side button and check whether Theater Mode is on. Low Power Mode disables Always On, so a wrist-down face may not behave as you expect. These settings affect wake or always-visible behavior; they are not brightness controls. Keep the screen awake longer
If the screen becomes readable but turns off too quickly, adjust wake duration rather than brightness. On the watch, open Settings → Display & Brightness → Wake Duration, then choose Wake for 70 Seconds. This controls how long the display stays active after waking; it does not increase its brightness.
Improve readability with accessibility settings
If small or low-contrast interface elements are the problem, making the whole display brighter may not help as much as changing readability options. Depending on your watch and software, you can adjust Text Size or turn on Bold Text, Increase Contrast or Reduce Transparency. Apple also documents Minimum Brightness, an accessibility option that raises the minimum brightness level when the display responds to lighting conditions. Text Size is not a brightness control: it enlarges letters in supported interfaces. Likewise, brighter settings cannot guarantee that the screen will be easy to see in direct sunlight or from every angle.

If the brightness control changes but the display remains unusually dark in every state, flickers, has uneven illumination or is difficult to read regardless of the setting, the problem may not be a software setting. Avoid assuming a particular cause; persistent display problems may need assessment by Apple or an authorized service provider.
