To disconnect an Apple Watch and remove Activation Lock, unpair it from the paired iPhone in the Watch app. Erasing the watch directly from its own Settings removes its content but leaves Activation Lock on. If you’re selling, giving away or trading in the watch, use the iPhone method and wait for it to finish.
Unpair an Apple Watch using your iPhone
This is the preferred method across Apple Watch models. Apple says the process erases the watch, disconnects it from the iPhone and removes Activation Lock when unpairing completes with the owner’s Apple Account password. The iPhone normally attempts to create a watch backup during unpairing; a backup is not guaranteed if the process is interrupted, and not every item is necessarily restorable.
Before you start
- Keep the watch and iPhone close together, powered on, and with Bluetooth enabled.
- Have the watch passcode and the password for the Apple Account associated with the watch ready. Apple Account was previously called Apple ID.
- Decide whether to keep or remove the cellular plan, if the watch has one.
- Allow the process to finish without interrupting either device.
Steps
- Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then tap All Watches at the top.
- Tap the info button next to the watch you want to disconnect.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch, then tap the confirmation button, which may show the watch’s name.
- If prompted, choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan. Keep it if you will pair this same watch with this same iPhone again. Remove it if you are transferring the watch, pairing it with another iPhone or ending service.
- Enter the associated Apple Account password when prompted to turn off Activation Lock.
- Wait until unpairing finishes and the watch shows its setup screen.
Removing a cellular plan from the watch does not necessarily cancel the carrier subscription or stop billing. Contact the carrier separately if you need to cancel service. Apple’s current steps and plan guidance are in its unpairing instructions.
Unpairing and erasing are different
Unpairing through the iPhone is the right choice when transferring ownership. Erasing directly on the watch is useful when you want to wipe it but keep it associated with your account, or when the paired iPhone is unavailable. That direct erase does not remove Activation Lock.

| Goal | Action | Activation Lock |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the watch paired with the same iPhone | Leave it paired, or erase it directly if you intend to set it up again | Remains |
| Pair it with another iPhone | Unpair through the paired iPhone | Removed when unpairing completes with owner authentication |
| Sell, give away or trade in | Unpair through the paired iPhone; remove the cellular plan if applicable | Removed when unpairing completes with owner authentication |
| No paired iPhone available | Erase the watch, then remove it from the owner’s account if possible | Remains until separately removed |
| Forgot the watch passcode | Reset the watch while it is on its charger | Remains unless separately removed |
Unpairing does not erase the iPhone or your broader iCloud data. It erases the watch itself. Apple explains the distinction between these actions in its unpair and erase guide.
Erase an Apple Watch when you don’t have the iPhone
If the paired iPhone is unavailable and you still have the watch, you can erase it from the watch. This restores it to factory setup, but the former owner’s Apple Account is still needed to clear Activation Lock before someone else can activate it.
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap General, then Reset. Menu wording or placement can vary by watchOS version.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings and enter the watch passcode if asked.
- For a cellular model, choose whether to keep or remove the plan.
- Tap Erase All or the equivalent confirmation and wait for the erase to finish.
Afterward, remove the watch from the owner’s account using Apple Find Devices. Remote erasure by itself is not the same as removing the watch from the account; complete the account-removal step as well. If you erased or replaced the old iPhone before unpairing, the watch may still be associated with the Apple Account even if it no longer appears locally on that iPhone.

Reset a watch if you forgot its passcode
If you can’t open Settings because you don’t know the passcode, Apple’s reset procedure erases the watch but does not remove Activation Lock.
- Put the Apple Watch on its charger.
- Press and hold the side button until the power controls appear.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown until the erase screen appears.
- Tap Reset, then tap Reset again to confirm.
- Wait for the erase to finish, then set up the watch and restore from a backup if one is offered.
If Erase Data is enabled, Apple says the watch can erase itself after 10 incorrect passcode attempts. That is a security feature, not a substitute for unpairing before transfer. See Apple’s forgot-passcode instructions. Do not insert anything into the watch’s case openings; Apple Watch has no SIM slot or reset button.
Prepare the watch before selling, gifting or trading it in
Complete the iPhone-based unpairing before handing over the watch. Make sure the process reaches the setup screen and that you enter the Apple Account password if prompted. Record the serial number if you need it for your transaction, and remove any accessories you intend to keep. Apple’s sale, gift and trade-in checklist also covers preparing the device.

- For a trade-in, check the recipient’s own preparation requirements as well as Apple’s guidance.
- If the old iPhone is still available, use it to unpair. If it is gone, erase the watch and then remove it from the owner’s account.
Remove Activation Lock if the watch is already gone
If you handed over the watch without unpairing, the previous owner must use Apple’s account and Find My device-management tools to erase it and remove it from their account. Erasing remotely alone may leave Activation Lock in place. A buyer cannot legitimately bypass that lock; the owner associated with the watch must resolve it. If you no longer remember the account password, recover access through Apple before trying to transfer ownership.
Check that a used Apple Watch is ready to pair
A watch at the initial setup screen is a useful first check, but complete the pairing flow if practical. Setup should not ask for the previous owner’s Apple Account password. If it does, Activation Lock is still active, and the seller needs to remove the watch from their account. A factory reset or pairing with another iPhone cannot bypass the lock.
For a cellular model, ask the seller to confirm that their plan has been removed. Carrier billing may still require a separate cancellation.

Pair the watch with another iPhone
After successful unpairing, turn on the watch and hold it near the new iPhone. Follow the onscreen pairing instructions, then choose Set Up as New Apple Watch or restore from an available backup. You may need to add payment cards, transport passes, app settings and cellular service again; some credentials require fresh authentication.
Troubleshoot unpairing problems
The watch doesn’t appear in the Watch app
Bring the devices close together, restart both, and check whether the watch is associated with the Apple Account you expect. If the iPhone has been erased, replaced or is no longer available, erase the watch directly and remove it from the account through Find Devices.
The Apple Account password is rejected
Make sure you are entering the password for the account associated with the watch, rather than another family member’s account. If you cannot access that account, use Apple’s password-recovery process before transferring ownership.

Unpairing appears stuck
Keep both devices powered and nearby, and avoid interrupting the process. If it does not complete, consult Apple’s unpairing guidance or contact Apple Support rather than repeatedly erasing the watch without resolving Activation Lock.
The buyer still sees Activation Lock
The watch may have been erased directly instead of unpaired, or it may not have been removed from the owner’s account. The former owner must finish the account-removal step.
Family Setup or a child’s watch is involved
Managed watches can involve a family organizer’s account or cellular plan, so the standard owner workflow may not cover every configuration. Check the Apple Watch User Guide for the relevant watchOS guidance or contact Apple Support.
The core iPhone-based method applies across Apple Watch generations, including GPS and cellular models. Exact menu labels can vary with watchOS and configuration.
