Apple Watch can manually call emergency services, detect some severe crashes and hard falls, show Medical ID to responders, notify trusted contacts, support Check In, and—on Apple Watch Ultra models—sound a loud siren. What it can do depends on your watch model, watchOS version, connection, battery level, carrier and country.
Set up the features before you need them. Apple Watch is a useful safety aid, but it is not a guarantee of emergency response or a replacement for a phone, cellular coverage or professional medical care.
Set up Apple Watch safety features first
Complete these steps while you are safe and connected:
- Update the paired iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Open Health on the iPhone, tap your profile picture, then open Medical ID. Add relevant conditions, allergies, reactions, medications, blood type if known, organ-donor status where relevant, and current emergency contacts.
- Enable Show When Locked if you want responders to access Medical ID without unlocking the device. Consider enabling Share During Emergency Call.
- On the iPhone, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services, and make sure Emergency Calls & SOS is enabled.
- In the iPhone Watch app, open My Watch > Emergency SOS and review Fall Detection and Call After Severe Crash.
- Keep Wrist Detection enabled. Apple says it is required for automatic Fall Detection emergency calling.
- If you own an Ultra 3, set up and practise its satellite features using the built-in demo.
To view Medical ID on the watch, press and hold the side button until the sliders appear, then drag Medical ID. The information is only as useful as its last update, so review it after changing medication, moving, changing contacts or receiving a diagnosis. Apple’s Medical ID guide explains the available fields.

Apple Watch safety features at a glance
| Feature | What it does | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency SOS | Lets you manually call local emergency services. | Needs a viable cellular, Wi-Fi calling or supported satellite connection. |
| Crash Detection | Responds to some severe passenger-vehicle crashes. | It cannot detect every crash. |
| Fall Detection | Responds to some hard falls and can call for help if the wearer remains immobile. | It can miss falls and may trigger during high-impact activity. |
| Medical ID | Shows selected health information and emergency contacts to responders. | It must be accurate and configured to appear when locked. |
| Check In | Notifies a chosen contact about arrival, a completed workout or a missed timer. | It is not an automatic emergency-services call. |
| Ultra Siren | Produces a repeating loud sound and haptic taps to attract nearby attention. | Available only on Apple Watch Ultra models. |
| Ultra 3 satellite features | Support emergency messaging, messages and location sharing away from cellular and Wi-Fi coverage where available. | Limited by region, activation, carrier and satellite visibility. |

How to call emergency services manually
Use the Emergency Call slider
- Press and hold the Apple Watch side button.
- When the sliders appear, drag Emergency Call to the right.
- Speak with the responder and follow the instructions.
Use the automatic countdown
Continue holding the side button until the warning sound and countdown finish. Apple Watch then attempts to call local emergency services. The warning sound plays even when Silent Mode is enabled.
You can also use Siri or Messages to contact help where supported. Emergency calling requires an available route through the paired iPhone, Wi-Fi calling, cellular service or supported satellite functionality. A GPS-only watch does not generally provide the same independent off-phone calling capability as a cellular model.

How Crash Detection works
Crash Detection is available on Apple Watch Series 8 or later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation or later) and Apple Watch Ultra or later, with compatible software such as watchOS 9 or later for the supported models. It is designed for some severe passenger-vehicle crashes, including front-impact, side-impact, rear-end collisions and rollovers—not every type of accident.
After a suspected severe crash, the watch sounds an alert, taps your wrist and displays an emergency prompt. You can call emergency services or dismiss the alert. If you do not respond, the watch starts a 30-second countdown. When it finishes, Apple Watch attempts to call emergency services. Emergency contacts may receive a message with your location, and Medical ID can be made available if configured.

Check or change Crash Detection
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch > Emergency SOS.
- Turn Call After Severe Crash on or off.
Crash Detection needs a cellular connection, Wi-Fi calling with an internet connection or, in certain supported situations, satellite communication. A cellular watch can still fail to call if its service is not activated, the carrier is incompatible or the available network does not support the required emergency-calling technology.
Apple states that Crash Detection sensor data is processed on the device and discarded after detection unless you agree to share data to improve the feature. Apple also says raw audio is not collected or stored for Crash Detection. See Apple’s Crash Detection support page.
How Fall Detection works
Fall Detection is available on Apple Watch SE or later, Series 4 or later and Ultra or later, subject to software and regional limitations. It is intended for people aged 18 or older. Apple says it turns on automatically for users aged 55 or older when the age information in the Health profile is correct.
What happens after a detected fall
- The watch taps your wrist, sounds an alarm and displays an alert.
- If you are conscious, tap I’m OK or drag Emergency Call.
- If the watch detects that you have been immobile for about one minute, it begins a 30-second countdown.
- If you do not cancel the countdown, Apple Watch attempts to call emergency services.
- After the call, emergency contacts may receive a message and location information.
Turn on Fall Detection
- Open the iPhone Watch app.
- Tap My Watch > Emergency SOS.
- Turn on Fall Detection.
- Choose Always on or Only on during workouts.
Fall Detection cannot identify every fall. High-impact exercise or other activity can produce a false alert, while a fall may be missed if the impact or wrist movement does not match the feature’s detection patterns. Automatic calling also depends on Wrist Detection and a usable connection through cellular, Wi-Fi calling, a nearby iPhone or supported satellite functionality.
In some regions, emergency systems require keypad input after a call connects. Apple Watch may not be able to complete that automated input. Read Apple’s Fall Detection and Emergency SOS guidance for the limitations that apply in your location.

Fastest method
- Press and hold the Action button.
- Wait for the countdown to finish.
- To stop the siren, tap the Stop button.
The siren continues until you stop it or the battery runs out. You can also press and hold the side button and drag the Siren slider, open the Siren app and tap Play, or ask Siri to “Start the siren” and then tap Play.
Do not activate the siren close to someone’s ears or in an enclosed environment. To reduce accidental activation, open Settings > Action Button on the watch and turn off Hold to Turn On under Siren. Details are in Apple’s Ultra Siren guide.
How to use Check In
Check In is a preventive tool for keeping a selected contact informed. It can notify them when you arrive somewhere, complete a workout or fail to complete a timer-based check-in. It is not the same as Fall Detection or Crash Detection and does not automatically call emergency services simply because you have not arrived.

Ultra 3 satellite safety features
Apple Watch Ultra 3 can connect to satellites for emergency messaging, messages to friends and family, and location sharing when cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable, where the service is supported. This is not a worldwide replacement for voice emergency calling.

Prepare before going off-grid
- Pair and set up the Ultra 3.
- Add the satellite control to Control Center.
- Add the satellite complication to a watch face.
- Complete Medical ID and emergency-contact setup.
- Make sure the Messages app is installed.
- Run the demo from Control Center > satellite icon > Try Demo, from the satellite complication, or from Settings > SOS > Try Demo.
The demo does not call emergency services. For Messages via satellite, iMessage must be enabled on the paired iPhone, the watch SIM must be active and SMS availability or carrier charges may vary. Apple recommends exchanging messages with intended contacts within the preceding 30 days. Read Apple’s satellite setup guide before relying on the feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Medical ID and emergency contacts are essential
Medical ID is not just a convenience. In a crash or fall, responders may need to know about allergies, medications, medical conditions, blood type or an emergency contact before you can unlock the watch—or before you can speak.
Emergency contacts can receive alerts and location information after qualifying Emergency SOS, Crash Detection or Fall Detection events, but messaging and location availability vary. Keep contacts current and make sure the Messages app remains installed. Apple warns that emergency contacts may not be notified automatically if Messages has been deleted or is not the selected messaging app.
Which Apple Watch is best for safety?
| Need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Core safety features at the lowest current price | Apple Watch SE 3 GPS | Provides Emergency SOS, Fall Detection and Crash Detection without paying for Ultra-specific features. |
| Safety when leaving the iPhone behind | SE 3 GPS + Cellular or Series 11 GPS + Cellular | Can call and message independently when active, compatible cellular service is available. |
| Mainstream everyday use | Apple Watch Series 11 | Offers the core safety tools in a general-purpose model with a broader feature set than SE. |
| Siren, outdoor use and off-grid communication | Apple Watch Ultra 3 | Adds the Ultra siren and supported satellite features, along with an outdoor-focused design and longer battery life. |
Choose GPS if you normally carry your iPhone and want to avoid a watch cellular plan. GPS + Cellular is more useful for runners, hikers, children, older adults and anyone who may be away from the phone. It still requires compatible activation, carrier coverage and battery power.

Do not buy an Ultra solely for Crash Detection or Fall Detection; current standard models also support those features. Choose Ultra for the siren, outdoor design, battery advantages and—on Ultra 3 where available—satellite capabilities.
Apple’s U.S. prices observed in August 2026 started around $249 for SE 3 GPS, $399 for Series 11 and $799 for Ultra 3, but prices change by case, band, material, connectivity, tax and carrier terms. Check the live SE configurator and Apple Watch buying page before purchasing. Current Apple buying information states that Series 11, SE 3 and Ultra 3 require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later.
What can stop a safety feature from working?
No signal
A GPS-only watch generally needs the paired iPhone or a suitable Wi-Fi connection. A cellular watch needs active compatible service. Ultra 3 satellite features need supported geography, an unobstructed view of the sky and prior setup; some functions also require an active carrier plan.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Dead or low battery
A watch that is not worn, powered or sufficiently charged cannot detect an event or establish communications. Low Power Mode, weak connectivity and a watch worn too loosely can also affect what the device can do.
The wearer keeps moving after a fall
Fall Detection is not an instant rescue trigger. When it detects movement, the watch generally gives the wearer an opportunity to respond. Automatic calling is associated with remaining immobile for about a minute, followed by the 30-second countdown.
A false crash or fall alert appears
If you are safe, dismiss the alert. If an emergency call has already connected, remain on the line and explain the mistake rather than hanging up.
International travel
Emergency calling on supported cellular models may work abroad, but Apple warns that the watch may not be able to send your location or text emergency contacts internationally. Emergency numbers, carrier support and local emergency-system prompts vary by country.
