Samsung’s WalkieTalkie app works on the Galaxy Watch4 and newer Wear OS Galaxy Watch models, including the Watch4 Classic, Watch5 and Watch5 Pro. Each person needs a compatible watch, the app, a Samsung account and an internet connection through a connected phone, Wi‑Fi or (on an LTE watch) active cellular service. It is an internet voice-chat app—not a traditional radio, and not an off-grid emergency channel.
What Samsung WalkieTalkie actually does
WalkieTalkie creates one-to-one or group voice rooms. You press and hold a microphone button, speak, then release it to send a short voice transmission. Participants take turns, rather than speaking simultaneously as they would on a phone call.
The app uses the watch’s network connection or the connected smartphone’s connection. Nearby watches do not communicate simply because they are close together. Bluetooth can assist with discovery or relay a phone connection, but the conversation still depends on internet access. A room PIN identifies a particular app room; it is not a radio frequency.

For long conversations, a normal call is usually more natural. WalkieTalkie should not replace a licensed two-way-radio system, managed business push-to-talk service or emergency communications.

Compatibility and requirements
- Supported watch: Galaxy Watch4, Watch4 Classic, Watch5, Watch5 Pro and later Galaxy Watch models running Wear OS, according to the current app listing. Older Galaxy Watch, Gear and Active models running Tizen should not be assumed compatible.
- Android setup phone: Wear OS Galaxy Watches are configured through Samsung’s Galaxy Wearable app. Samsung’s WalkieTalkie listing describes Samsung-account registration through a Galaxy smartphone connected to the watch.
- Samsung account: Sign in when the app requests it.
- Connectivity: Bluetooth through a nearby connected phone, suitable Wi‑Fi, or cellular data on an activated LTE watch.
- Permissions: Microphone access is required to speak. Contacts and nearby-device access may be needed for invitations and discovery.
- Other participant: Everyone in the conversation needs a supported Galaxy Watch and the WalkieTalkie app.
Availability can vary with region, software version, account configuration and carrier. Do not treat Galaxy Wearable’s broad Android compatibility as a guarantee that every non-Samsung Android phone supports this particular app. Samsung’s Wear OS setup and related watch messaging documentation do not present iPhone pairing as supported for these functions.
Install the official app
- On the Android phone paired to your watch, open Google Play Store.
- Search for WalkieTalkie.
- Verify that the developer is Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. The official package is
com.samsung.android.wear.walkietalkie. - Install or update the app for the watch.
- Open WalkieTalkie on the watch and complete Samsung-account and permission prompts.
If Play Store does not offer the app, first check the watch model, Wear OS and phone software, active Google and Samsung accounts, and regional availability. An older Tizen watch may not be able to install the Wear OS app.

Create a room and invite people
Samsung’s published walkthrough uses these flows; labels can differ slightly by language, model or software version.
Invite contacts
- Open WalkieTalkie on the watch.
- Tap Invite, then Contacts.
- Select one or more people.
- Enter a room name and tap Finish.
Invite nearby people with a PIN
- Open WalkieTalkie and tap Invite.
- Choose People nearby.
- Name the room and tap Finish.
- Give the displayed PIN only to the intended participants.
Nearby discovery may use Bluetooth-related permissions, but the room itself still requires network connectivity.

Join a room
A recipient can tap the invitation notification, open WalkieTalkie and select the invitation from the invitations list, or use Search nearby and enter the room’s PIN. If nearby search fails, use the PIN manually. The recipient still needs a compatible watch, the app, a Samsung-account setup and an internet connection.
Send a voice message
- Open the desired room.
- Press and hold the on-screen microphone or talk button.
- Speak clearly toward the watch microphone.
- Release the button when finished.
- Wait for the other participant to respond.
Holding the control keeps the microphone active; releasing completes that voice burst. It is not a full-duplex call, so participants should avoid talking over one another.
Can WalkieTalkie work without your phone?

Carrier support varies by country, provider and watch model. Samsung documents phone-free network functions for LTE watches with active service; otherwise communications rely on the connected phone. Check your carrier’s current wearable requirements before buying a plan. Official examples include AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Manage microphone and other permissions
On many Wear OS Galaxy Watches, open Settings → Apps → Permission manager, choose a permission such as Microphone, and allow WalkieTalkie. For app-specific controls, use Settings → Apps → Apps list → WalkieTalkie → Permissions. Samsung notes that menu names vary by model, carrier and software version.
Allow Contacts or nearby-device access only when you need those invitation methods. Review microphone access before using the app with children or groups.

The app cannot be installed
- Confirm the watch is a Galaxy Watch4 or newer Wear OS model.
- Update the watch, phone, Galaxy Wearable and Play Store.
- Check the active Google and Samsung accounts.
- Search for the official Samsung listing, not a similarly named third-party app.
- Consider regional availability. An older Tizen watch may be incompatible.
The app opens but cannot create a room
- Sign in to the Samsung account and confirm the watch is paired in Galaxy Wearable.
- Allow microphone, Contacts and nearby-device permissions requested by the app.
- Connect the phone or watch to the internet.
- Close and reopen WalkieTalkie after changing permissions.
A participant cannot join
- Verify that the participant has a supported watch and installed the app.
- Send a fresh invitation or PIN.
- Try the notification or invitations list instead of nearby search.
- Confirm both watches are online and signed in.
Messages send but are not heard
- Raise watch media or app volume and check mute or restrictive sound modes.
- Confirm microphone permission for the sender.
- Move away from wind, machinery and other loud noise; do not cover the microphone with a sleeve or case.
- Test the microphone in another app, then restart the watch and WalkieTalkie.
- Update or reinstall only after noting any room or invitation details you need.
LTE appears inactive
Confirm that the wearable plan is activated for the exact watch model, mobile data is enabled, the carrier supports the service and the watch has coverage. For cellular-watch troubleshooting, see Google’s Wear OS guidance.

WalkieTalkie, calls or radios?
- Samsung WalkieTalkie: Best for short alternating voice bursts among Galaxy Watch users.
- Normal voice call: Better for a sustained one-to-one conversation or natural back-and-forth speech.
- Messages or voice notes: Better when the recipient does not need to respond immediately.
- Professional push-to-talk: More suitable for dispatch, managed users, recording, administration and business policies.
- Dedicated two-way radios: Better where cellular and Wi‑Fi coverage is unreliable, but they do not join Samsung app rooms.
Buying an LTE watch makes sense when you also want phone-free calls, messaging, navigation or safety features. If you normally carry your phone, a Bluetooth Watch4-or-newer model may provide the app without a separate watch cellular plan.
Privacy, battery and safety
- Share room PINs only with intended participants.
- Microphone, Contacts and nearby-device permissions expose information needed for those functions; review them periodically.
- LTE use, weak signal, GPS and frequent voice transmissions can consume more battery than ordinary watch use.
- WalkieTalkie depends on the app, network, battery and participating users. It is not guaranteed emergency communication or an off-grid channel.
The simplest working setup
For most owners, the shortest path is: use a Galaxy Watch4-or-newer Wear OS model, pair it through Galaxy Wearable on Android, install Samsung’s official WalkieTalkie app, sign in, allow the microphone, create a room, invite another compatible watch and test a press-and-hold message while both devices are online. Choose LTE only if phone-free communication and other cellular watch features justify the added plan and coverage requirements.
