Workout Buddy is an Apple Intelligence feature in the Apple Watch Workout app. To use it, you need a compatible watch, a nearby paired iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, matching English device and Siri languages, and Bluetooth headphones. Choose a supported workout, then open Alerts > Workout Buddy before starting.
What Workout Buddy does
Workout Buddy offers spoken motivation during a workout and can give a spoken summary when you finish. Apple says it can draw on current workout information—including heart rate, pace, distance and Activity ring progress—as well as fitness history and personal milestones. Its voice is generated using a model based on Fitness+ trainer voice data. It is an encouragement feature, not a structured training plan or medically validated coaching.
It is built into the Workout app in watchOS 26; it is not a separate app to download. Apple says generated output can vary, so you should not expect a particular announcement at every milestone or a fixed script.

These are combined requirements: a supported watch alone is not enough, and not every iPhone that can install a current iOS release supports Apple Intelligence. Apple also says availability can vary by region. Its Apple Intelligence requirements page, published July 10, 2026, lists the current device and language requirements: How to get Apple Intelligence.

Turn on Apple Intelligence on iPhone
- Update the paired iPhone to a current iOS release.
- Open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn on Apple Intelligence.
- Set the iPhone’s device language and Siri language to the same supported language. For Workout Buddy, choose English.
- Allow any required language models to download. Apple does not specify a fixed download time; it can vary.
Set up Workout Buddy on Apple Watch
- Press the Digital Crown and open Workout.
- Scroll to a supported workout. If it is not shown, tap Add at the bottom to find more workout types.
- On the workout setup screen, tap Alerts.
- Tap Workout Buddy. Depending on the support-page locale or label revision, the control may be described as Use Workout Buddy.
- Turn on the Workout Buddy control.
- Select a voice.
- Tap Back, then Back again to return to the workout setup screen.
- Keep your iPhone nearby and Bluetooth headphones connected, then tap Start.

If you select swimming, rowing, yoga, Pilates, dance or another activity not on this list, Workout Buddy may not appear. That alone does not mean the watch is defective.

During the workout
Announcements are occasional rather than a continuous reading of every metric. Workout Buddy may offer encouragement based on workout data and fitness history, and may call out a personal or distance milestone—for example, a fastest 10K. Apple does not promise an announcement for every milestone or a set timing and wording.

After the workout
Workout Buddy can provide a spoken summary with details such as total time and calories burned. The generated summary may vary in content and wording.
Mute announcements without ending the workout
While the workout is active, swipe right on the Apple Watch workout screen and tap Mute. This silences Workout Buddy; it does not end or pause the workout recording.

If Workout Buddy is missing or unavailable
Check the prerequisites in this order. A missing control is often explained by the selected workout or a device, language, or audio requirement.

- Confirm the watch is running watchOS 26.
- Select one of the supported workout types listed above.
- Check that the paired iPhone is an Apple Intelligence-capable model and is nearby.
- On iPhone, confirm Apple Intelligence is enabled in Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Make sure device language and Siri language match and are set to English.
- Connect Bluetooth headphones.
- Install the latest available software updates, then close and reopen Workout.
- If the control is still absent, restart both devices and check again.
Apple’s watchOS 26 release notes document an availability issue during beta 1 that was marked fixed. That historical beta issue does not establish the cause of a current problem: watchOS 26 Release Notes.

If Workout Buddy is enabled but silent
- Check that the headphones are connected to the expected device and that their volume is audible.
- Make sure Workout Buddy has not been muted from the active workout screen.
- Confirm that the selected workout is supported and the paired iPhone remains nearby.
- Check that Bluetooth audio has not switched to another device.
- Recheck that the iPhone and Siri languages still match.
Apple’s release notes include beta-era reports of announcement playback limitations on certain headphone connection paths, including some AirPods and third-party Bluetooth headphones. Those notes are not proof of a current, universal restriction. If routing checks do not help, reconnect the headphones and retry with the iPhone nearby.
Language, region and privacy
Workout Buddy is currently listed as available in English. Apple Intelligence supports other languages, but that broader support does not mean Workout Buddy works in those languages. A language change may also require the corresponding models to download. Apple notes that feature availability can vary by region, including restrictions affecting Apple Intelligence in China mainland and availability rules in the EU; consult its current availability requirements for your location.
Apple says Workout Buddy uses fitness history and current workout data and processes them privately and securely with Apple Intelligence.
