Yes—an iPhone 15 or later can charge an Apple Watch through its USB-C port. Connect an Apple Watch magnetic charging cable to the iPhone, then place the watch on the charging puck. It is wired emergency charging, not wireless charging from the back of the iPhone, and Apple says the iPhone can supply up to 4.5 watts. Apple’s USB-C instructions do not require a special setting.
What you need
- An iPhone 15 or later with a USB-C port.
- An Apple Watch magnetic charging cable. The simplest option is the Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C Cable, which plugs directly into the iPhone.
- Your Apple Watch.
If you have an older Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Cable with a USB-A plug, Apple says to connect it using an Apple USB-C to USB Adapter. The USB-C cable avoids that extra adapter. Apple recommends Apple or MFi-certified chargers; see its guidance on identifying authentic and certified Apple Watch chargers.
How to charge an Apple Watch from an iPhone
- Take the Apple Watch off your wrist.
- Plug the USB-C end of the Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C Cable into the iPhone’s USB-C port.
- Place the back of the watch against the magnetic charging puck and let it align.
- Check the Apple Watch display for the charging symbol or animation.
There is no battery-sharing toggle to turn on: Apple’s documented method starts when you connect the charger and position the watch correctly. For a USB-A charging cable, first connect it to the Apple USB-C to USB Adapter, then plug the adapter into the iPhone and place the watch on the puck.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich iPhones support this?
Apple documents this procedure for iPhone 15 and later, which have USB-C. The port is the important requirement; iPhone 14 and earlier use Lightning and are not covered by Apple’s direct USB-C charging instructions. For those phones, use a wall adapter, computer USB port, power bank, or another compatible charger rather than assuming a third-party adapter will provide the same function. Apple’s instructions are at Charge and connect with the USB-C connector on your iPhone.

Does the Apple Watch model affect compatibility?
Apple describes charging an Apple Watch through the iPhone’s USB-C port without limiting the feature to a particular watch generation. Use a compatible Apple Watch magnetic charger. Charging compatibility is separate from fast charging: which watches support Apple Watch fast charging depends on the watch model and charger setup. Apple’s normal fast-charge instructions call for compatible hardware and an 18W-or-greater USB-C power adapter; charging from an iPhone should not be treated as equivalent. See the Apple Watch User Guide for charging details.
How much power does the iPhone provide?
Apple specifies up to 4.5W from the iPhone’s USB-C connector for an Apple Watch or another small USB Power Delivery device. That is a maximum output, not a guaranteed charging rate at the watch. The actual rate can vary with the watch, battery condition, temperature, cable, and whether the iPhone is in use. There is no dependable minutes-to-percentage estimate without testing that specific combination.

This makes the method useful for a top-up away from an outlet, but it costs the iPhone battery and keeps the devices physically tethered. If the watch charges slowly, the iPhone’s limited output may be one reason.

How to tell whether charging has started
Look for the charging symbol or charging animation on the Apple Watch. You can also check whether its battery percentage rises after a few minutes. Apple explains how to check your battery and charge your Apple Watch; the battery level is available on the watch, and can also be viewed in an iPhone Batteries widget when configured.

What to do if the Apple Watch does not charge
- Make sure the iPhone is an iPhone 15 or later with USB-C.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the cable and, if used, the USB-C adapter.
- Check that the cable and charger are Apple or MFi-certified and are not visibly damaged.
- Remove the watch and center its back on the magnetic puck. Clear visible debris from the iPhone port and charger connector.
- If available, try another compatible Apple Watch charging cable.
- If the watch battery is fully depleted, leave it connected for several minutes before checking again.
- If either device is hot, move it to a cooler location and let it cool before trying again.
- If the watch remains unresponsive, follow Apple’s steps for an Apple Watch that will not turn on or charge.
Apple warns that counterfeit or uncertified chargers may cause slow charging, repeated charging sounds, or reduced battery lifespan. Its troubleshooting guidance also covers trying another cable or power source and force-restarting a watch that will not charge or turn on.

Use the iPhone method as a backup when you are away from an outlet and have the right cable. For regular charging, a wall adapter or computer USB port is more practical; a power bank or travel charger with an Apple Watch charging surface can be useful on trips. If you already own the USB-C Apple Watch charger, no extra purchase is needed for this method. If you need a cable, Apple sells a 1-metre Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C Cable; check Apple’s store for current price and availability.
