The Huawei wearable tipped for a September 2024 launch was the Huawei Watch D2, and the month-level prediction proved broadly correct: Huawei launched it that September. The original report’s specific suggestion of September 24 was unconfirmed, however. The D2 is a smartwatch with a physical inflatable wrist cuff for blood-pressure readings—not a watch that continuously measures blood pressure beat by beat.

What the original report said—and what it established

A report published on August 21, 2024, said Huawei might introduce a new blood-pressure wearable at a September event. It attributed the event speculation to Weibo tipster @UncleKanshan and pointed to a Chinese medical-device license describing a wrist ambulatory blood-pressure recorder. The report floated September 24 as a possible date, but did not confirm it. The original report therefore offered a plausible product clue and a tentative date, not an official launch schedule.

The product was the Huawei Watch D2. Huawei subsequently launched it in September 2024, so the broad timing was right; that does not make the specific September 24 date confirmed. Huawei’s launch-era announcement and its current product page describe the device and its functions.

How the Watch D2 measures blood pressure

The D2’s defining feature is a small mechanical airbag integrated into its strap. Huawei describes a 26.5 mm ultra-narrow airbag working with a miniature pump and pressure sensor. The system inflates the cuff and uses an oscillometric method to take a reading. Huawei lists a 1.82-inch AMOLED display, alongside smartwatch and other health features.

That physical cuff is an important distinction from watches that use optical sensors and algorithms to estimate cardiovascular measurements. A blood-pressure number on a screen does not, by itself, mean a device uses a cuff or has authorization for a particular medical use. The D2’s mechanism is intended to bring cuff-style measurement into a wrist-worn format, though correct positioning and stillness remain important.

What “24/7 blood-pressure monitoring” means

The Watch D2 offers single readings, scheduled readings and a 24-hour ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring (ABPM) plan. In the plan, it takes measurements at intervals rather than measuring continuously. The watch then presents daytime, nighttime and full-period systolic and diastolic averages, as well as pulse-rate readings.

In other words, “24/7” describes monitoring across a day, not uninterrupted, beat-to-beat measurement. Huawei’s page discusses ambulatory-monitoring interval guidance and minimum successful-reading thresholds; those are recommendations cited in Huawei’s product documentation, not proof that every wearer or use case will produce a complete or clinically useful record. Measurements require the wearer to be still, and movement can interfere with a reading.

Is the Watch D2 a medical device?

Huawei says the D2’s blood-pressure and ABPM functions have CE medical-device certification under EU Regulation 2017/745. That is a specific claim about those functions and the relevant regulatory market—not a universal approval for every country, every health feature, or every use. Huawei’s UK product page also presents the CE-MDR status. Local authorization and feature availability can differ.

Certification does not turn a smartwatch into a substitute for professional diagnosis or treatment. Huawei’s China documentation describes use for single or scheduled measurements at rest by adults aged 18 and older, with readings intended as reference data for healthcare professionals. Its Japanese support guidance likewise frames readings as reference values for home self-monitoring. Claims or validation associated with the earlier Watch D should not automatically be applied to every Watch D2 feature or market.

Limitations to consider

  • Technique matters: Wear and position the watch as directed, sit still, and avoid talking during a measurement. Huawei warns that movement, shaking or trembling can affect accuracy.
  • It is not a continuous sensor: The ABPM plan takes periodic readings. A missed or disrupted reading can leave gaps in the record.
  • It is not for diagnosis or treatment decisions: Do not use a single wearable reading to diagnose hypertension or change medication. Discuss concerning readings with a healthcare professional and use an appropriate monitor for confirmation.
  • It is a specialized watch: The cuff and pump make it more specialized than a conventional slim fitness watch. If you only want activity tracking, the blood-pressure hardware may add bulk without much benefit.
  • Not every population or condition is covered: Huawei says the device has not been validated for newborns or pregnant users.
  • Conditions can affect readings: Rest before measuring and make sure the watch is dry; Huawei warns that activity and wet conditions can affect measurement.

Availability and phone compatibility

The D2 is documented on Huawei product pages in multiple markets, but a product page is not a guarantee that every health function is authorized or enabled everywhere. Huawei says health indicators and availability can vary by country or region. Check the local Huawei page for the exact model, supported phone platform and blood-pressure features before buying; do not assume functions are identical on iOS and Android or available in every market.

For example, Huawei’s Japan support page lists the Watch D and Watch D2 in its blood-pressure-watch guidance. This does not establish regulatory clearance or availability in other countries. No global claim about US availability follows from European, Chinese or Japanese documentation.

Who should consider it?

The Watch D2 may suit someone who wants repeated home readings in a wearable form, values smartwatch functions, and lives somewhere the relevant medical functions are officially enabled. Its appeal is convenience and the option of scheduled or ambulatory-style readings without carrying a separate cuff. A buyer should be comfortable following measurement instructions and accepting a more specialized design.

It is a poor fit if you expect continuous blood-pressure tracking, need a device for urgent or diagnostic decisions, want a particularly slim fitness watch, or live where the blood-pressure functions are unavailable. It may also be the wrong first purchase if your priority is straightforward home hypertension monitoring rather than smartwatch integration.

Watch D2 or an upper-arm monitor?

A product-specific validated upper-arm monitor is usually the more straightforward default for routine home blood-pressure management. It is less convenient to wear throughout the day, but it is designed around that measurement task. If choosing a cuff, look for validation for the particular model—for example, through a recognized listing such as STRIDE BP—rather than assuming all monitors are equivalent. Huawei references STRIDE BP in its discussion of the original Watch D, but that should not be read as blanket validation of every D2 feature or market. Huawei’s account of the original Watch D provides that context.

Other smartwatches may be slimmer and offer heart-rate or other wellness features, but optical estimates should not be treated as equivalent to the D2’s inflatable-cuff method without product-specific evidence. The right choice depends on whether wearable convenience or a dedicated home-monitoring tool matters more.

What the September rumor got right

The 2024 report correctly pointed readers toward a real Huawei wrist blood-pressure product, and its September launch window was broadly borne out. Its exact suggested date was not confirmed in the report. The consequential detail is what the Watch D2 became: a cuff-based smartwatch with single, scheduled and periodic 24-hour monitoring options, subject to measurement limitations and country-specific availability.
