Huawei unveiled the HUAWEI WATCH GT Runner 2 at its “Now is Your Run” event in Madrid on February 26, 2026. The second-generation running watch follows the 2021 GT Runner, adding dual-band satellite positioning, marathon-focused tools, a titanium case and a lightweight AMOLED design. Pricing and retail timing vary by country, and the available evidence does not confirm an official US launch.

What Huawei launched

The GT Runner 2 is a running-oriented smartwatch rather than a simple fitness tracker. Huawei presented it as its return to professional running watches after a five-year gap, with Eliud Kipchoge and the dsm-firmenich Running Team associated with the launch. That partnership is promotional and collaborative; it is not evidence that Kipchoge independently validated every measurement or training feature. Huawei’s launch announcement is documented in its Madrid event release.

The watch is the successor to the original GT Runner, which introduced Huawei’s TruSport running-analysis approach, including measures such as training load and Running Ability Index. GT Runner 2 carries that training emphasis forward with structured workouts, pace guidance, running metrics, recovery information and a dedicated marathon mode. Exact menus and availability can depend on Huawei Health software and region, so buyers should check the local product page before assuming every feature is included.

Features that matter to runners

  • Marathon mode: designed for race-day pacing and strategy rather than merely recording elapsed time.
  • Training guidance: structured plans, pace targets and workout analysis aim to turn recorded data into actionable sessions.
  • Run metrics: distance, pace, route, heart rate and recovery-related measurements are central to the platform.
  • Dual-band GNSS: the watch can use multiple satellite systems, potentially improving tracking in difficult conditions.
  • Lightweight build: the watch weighs about 34.5g without its strap, useful for long road runs and races.

Huawei lists GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou, QZSS and, on relevant regional specifications, NavIC support. Its suspended or hidden antenna design is intended to improve reception. That is a hardware claim, not a guarantee of perfect tracks: tunnels, tall buildings, tree cover, switchbacks and steep terrain can still produce errors. Independent coverage has been positive about the redesigned GPS system but has also reported variation in GPS and elevation behavior between courses. Huawei’s statements about substantially improved accuracy should therefore be read alongside, not instead of, independent testing.

Huawei’s 5 ATM rating indicates resistance to static pressure equivalent to 50 metres under laboratory testing. It is not a promise that the watch can be taken diving to 50 metres or used safely in every high-pressure water activity.

Battery and real-world performance

There is no single verified global battery figure for GT Runner 2 in the available regional material. Do not substitute the first-generation GT Runner’s advertised endurance. Huawei’s eventual local claims should be separated into smartwatch, workout, GPS and always-on-display modes. Continuous GNSS, music, frequent notifications, bright screens and health monitoring can reduce runtime substantially. Independent GPS, heart-rate and elevation results are more useful than an “up to” maximum, particularly for marathon planning.

Android and iPhone compatibility

Huawei lists Android 9.0-or-newer and iOS 13.0-or-newer compatibility. Pairing is not the same as feature parity: notifications, music controls, payments, health services, training plans, app availability and data integrations can differ between Android and iPhone and between countries. Confirm the current Huawei Health app and regional service support before buying.

Is it a serious Garmin, COROS or Apple alternative?

The hardware makes a credible case for runners who want an AMOLED smartwatch that is light, titanium-built and capable of everyday health tracking as well as training. Marathon tools, dual-band positioning and broad phone compatibility are meaningful strengths.

The bigger question is the ecosystem. Garmin Connect and COROS offer mature training histories, workout construction, accessory support and multisport workflows. Apple Watch has unusually deep iPhone integration and third-party app support. Huawei Health may be perfectly adequate for a runner starting fresh, but it can be less compelling for someone whose history and coaching workflow already lives in Garmin Connect, Apple Health, COROS or Strava. User reports have raised export and Strava concerns, but those reports do not prove universal incompatibility; verify the current regional integration and whether workouts can be exported in the formats you use.

Who should consider it?

  • Road and marathon runners: likely the best fit for the marathon mode, pace guidance and running-first design.
  • Everyday smartwatch users: attractive if you want health features and an AMOLED display without a heavy endurance watch.
  • Android and iPhone owners in supported markets: compatible on paper, but check regional feature parity.
  • Existing Garmin or COROS users: switch only if Huawei’s hardware and local pricing outweigh the value of your established data ecosystem.
  • Triathletes, US buyers and import shoppers: investigate multisport depth, warranty, software region and service availability before ordering.

Bottom line

The February 26, 2026 Madrid event was a completed unveiling of the Huawei Watch GT Runner 2, not a future teaser. It is a substantial return to dedicated running hardware, with a 34.5g titanium design, AMOLED screen, dual-band GNSS and marathon-oriented training tools. Whether it is the right buy depends less on the specification sheet than on your country’s price and warranty, Huawei Health’s integrations and whether you need Garmin-, COROS- or Apple-level ecosystem depth.
