Huawei has a watch-based feature that estimates elevated blood-glucose risk, but it does not measure glucose or diagnose diabetes. Huawei describes it as a research function that uses wearable health signals collected over several days. A high-risk result is a reason to ask about clinical testing—not proof of diabetes; a low-risk result cannot rule it out.
What the Huawei feature actually does
Huawei calls the function Blood Glucose Health Research. Its instructions describe collecting indirect physiological data from the watch, including sleep- and heart-rate-related signals, during daytime and nighttime wear. After an assessment period, the feature assigns a category: low, medium, high, or no result. It does not provide a glucose reading in mg/dL or mmol/L.
Huawei says the assessment typically takes 3–14 days. Its China support documentation specifies data requirements that include at least 20 hours of daytime resting-state data and 40 hours of nighttime sleep data during the assessment, with minimum periods of two hours of daytime resting data and four hours of nighttime sleep data. Those are Huawei’s stated operating requirements, not independently established medical thresholds. If the watch does not collect enough valid data, it may return no result.
Huawei describes low risk as no obvious elevated blood-glucose risk detected; medium and high indicate that elevated risk may be present. These are algorithmic risk categories, not lab results. Huawei says the product is not a medical device and that its results are for reference, not diagnosis or treatment. Huawei’s support instructions explain the feature and its limitations.

What it does—and does not—tell you
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Does it measure blood glucose? | No glucose value is documented for this feature; it estimates risk from indirect watch data. |
| Does it use a finger prick or an inserted glucose sensor? | No, according to the cited Huawei instructions. |
| Can it diagnose diabetes or prediabetes? | No. Huawei identifies it as research, not a medical diagnostic function. |
| Can it guide insulin or medication decisions? | No. Do not use it for dosing, treating low glucose, or changing medication. |
| Can a low-risk result rule out diabetes? | No. It is not a substitute for clinical assessment or laboratory testing. |
The distinction is important because “diabetes detection” can sound like a watch has measured glucose or caught a disease before symptoms. The available documentation does not establish either claim. Risk estimates can be wrong, and incomplete wear or sensor data can prevent a result. A high-risk category may warrant follow-up; a reassuring category should not delay testing if you have symptoms or risk factors.
Which Huawei watches support it?
Huawei’s China support page lists several compatible products, including the WATCH FIT 5 Pro, WATCH 4 and WATCH 4 Pro, WATCH 5, WATCH D2, and WATCH Ultimate 2, as well as selected special editions. Huawei’s global research page describes regional research activity, but that does not establish universal availability on every model or in every country.
Availability may depend on the country or region, Huawei Health account settings, firmware, app version, phone operating system, and local rollout. In particular, do not assume the feature is available in the United States: the cited materials do not establish current U.S. support. Secondary coverage has associated the feature with a regional rollout on the WATCH GT 6 Pro, but Huawei’s standard global product page does not establish that all GT 6 Pro watches have it. Confirm support for the exact model and market before buying.

The WATCH D2’s inclusion on Huawei’s research compatibility list does not make it a glucose meter. Huawei positions that model around wrist-based blood-pressure monitoring; that is a separate feature from this risk research.
How to find the feature
Huawei’s China instructions give this path on a compatible watch: open the app list, choose Huawei Innovation Research, select Blood Glucose Health Research, and tap Join Research. Wear the watch through the day and night during the assessment. When it is complete, open the result prompt on the watch; prior assessments can be reviewed by swiping up on the research home screen.
Menu names and phone-side access may vary by region and software. Huawei’s Chinese instructions say the phone-side research app can show more detail but that iOS users cannot view results there. Verify current local support rather than assuming the same phone experience everywhere. If no result appears after the assessment window, check that the watch was worn continuously and fitted properly, and that enough valid daytime and sleep data were recorded.

What to do with a high-risk result
- Do not self-diagnose or panic. The watch has not confirmed diabetes.
- Arrange clinical follow-up. Ask a healthcare professional whether testing is appropriate, especially if you have risk factors or symptoms.
- Use established tests for diagnosis. Clinicians may use HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose, an oral glucose tolerance test, or random plasma glucose in appropriate circumstances.
- Do not change treatment based on the watch. Never use this score to decide insulin doses, stop medication, or treat suspected hypoglycemia.
Unusual thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, severe fatigue, or blurred vision are reasons to seek medical advice. Vomiting or confusion warrants prompt medical attention. A low-risk watch result should not override symptoms or a clinician’s recommendation to test.

Huawei’s documentation says the research is intended for adults interested in blood-glucose health, including some people with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, and excludes type 1 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and other special types. Even for eligible users, it is not a tool for pregnancy-related glucose management, emergency decisions, or diabetes treatment.
How strong is the evidence?
Wearable data is a plausible input for metabolic-risk research, but that does not validate Huawei’s consumer algorithm. A 2026 Nature study involving 1,165 participants reported that wearable data combined with routine blood biomarkers improved prediction of insulin resistance compared with demographic and routine laboratory information alone. It used Fitbit and Google Pixel Watch devices, studied insulin resistance, and did not validate Huawei’s feature.

Earlier work has explored wearable-derived glucose-related signals too, but some research uses additional information such as food logs or continuous glucose-monitoring data. That is not the same as a retail smartwatch measuring glucose noninvasively. The public Huawei support material cited here explains the process and disclaimer but does not provide a full peer-reviewed validation report with diagnostic accuracy measures against laboratory standards.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers not to use smartwatches or smart rings that claim to measure blood glucose without piercing the skin. Its warning concerns glucose-measurement claims; it does not turn Huawei’s risk category into a diagnostic test. People who need glucose readings should use an appropriate authorized glucose meter or continuous glucose monitor and consult a healthcare professional. Read the FDA safety communication.
Should you buy a Huawei watch for this?
Consider a compatible Huawei watch for its broader activity, sleep, heart-rate, and fitness features if those suit your phone ecosystem and the watch is officially supported where you live. Huawei claims up to 21 days of light use or 12 days of typical use for the GT 6 Pro, with results dependent on usage and conditions; those are manufacturer figures, not independent test results. Its product page lists iOS and Android compatibility, but that does not guarantee every research feature works equally on both platforms.

- 5ATM & IP68 Water Resistance – Swim-ready and dust-resistant for active lifestyles
- Up to 14 Days Battery Life – Powerful 208mAh battery for long-lasting performance

Do not buy one primarily to monitor glucose or detect diabetes. Before purchase, check that the exact model, current firmware, Huawei Health region, and phone combination expose Blood Glucose Health Research. If you need actual glucose readings for care decisions, discuss a dedicated blood-glucose meter or CGM with a clinician; those devices use glucose-measuring sensors and are fundamentally different from an indirect smartwatch risk estimate.
Verdict: Huawei’s feature is real, but “detects diabetes before you know you have it” overstates the evidence. It can flag possible elevated blood-glucose risk in some regional research programs; it cannot measure glucose, diagnose diabetes, or replace testing.
