At CES 2024, I tried Nuance Audio, a prototype pair of glasses with hearing assistance built into the temples. In my brief demo, speech came through surprisingly clearly despite the busy show floor. That was an encouraging first impression, not proof that the glasses will work equally well in every setting: later testing points to real trade-offs, including roughly eight hours of battery life and no music or phone-call streaming.
What I tried at CES
Nuance Audio, made by EssilorLuxottica, was shown publicly as a prototype at CES in Las Vegas, held January 9–12, 2024. The first-person impression here comes from that hands-on demonstration; the prototype should not be assumed to match every detail of the later retail product. EssilorLuxottica’s CES announcement introduced the product as eyewear with hearing technology integrated into its temples.
Calling these “smart glasses” can set the wrong expectation. Nuance Audio is better understood as hearing-aid glasses: it combines eyewear, microphones, speakers and hearing-aid software, with phone-app connectivity for setup. It is not a camera-first product like Ray-Ban Meta, nor does it work like ordinary Bluetooth audio glasses.

How the hearing glasses work
Microphones in the temples pick up nearby sound. The system processes it, including directional and noise-reduction processing intended to make speech easier to hear, then temple-mounted speakers send amplified sound toward the ears. The design leaves the ear canal open rather than placing an earbud or earmold inside it. The FDA 510(k) documentation describes Nuance Audio as an over-the-counter hearing-aid software system used with the glasses.

That open-ear approach can avoid the plugged feeling some people dislike and leaves ambient sound audible. But it also means there is less acoustic isolation than with an in-ear device. How well the sound reaches the ears depends partly on frame fit and the distance between the speakers and ears; louder settings or a poor fit may contribute to feedback, and some wearers may find their own voice sounds unusual.
Why my demo felt effective—and what it could not prove
In the CES demonstration, speech sounded clearer to me than I expected in a noisy environment. Directional processing that emphasizes a person in front of the wearer, the open-ear delivery and the convenience of combining eyewear with hearing assistance are plausible reasons the experience felt compelling. The electronics are integrated into ordinary-looking eyewear, which may appeal to people reluctant to wear a visibly separate hearing device.

A trade-show demo is not a controlled clinical test. It cannot establish all-day performance, reliability, or how the glasses will work for different hearing profiles in a home, car, restaurant or outdoors. The demo also took place with a prototype, so it should not be treated as a guarantee of retail-product performance.

What the testing says
Evidence from different kinds of testing should be kept distinct. The FDA submission reports an average aided improvement of 3.49 dB in speech-in-noise testing with 19 adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss. It also describes four preset profiles whose real-ear aided responses met the submission’s specified ±6 dB criterion against NAL-NL2 targets in the reported testing, and a 14-day patient-reported outcome study involving 23 adults. These are regulatory-supporting data with specific samples and methods, not a promise of the same benefit for every wearer. See the FDA clearance documentation.

In separate laboratory and audiologist testing, HearingTracker reported scores of 4.3 out of 5 for speech in quiet and 2.1 out of 5 for speech in noise; both were above the category averages, though the noise score indicates a more mixed result. Its review also identified limitations involving feedback, battery life and the absence of audio streaming. These results help set expectations, but do not mean the glasses will reliably resolve conversation in every loud room. Read HearingTracker’s testing and review.
Who Nuance Audio is designed for
The FDA-cleared intended users are adults aged 18 or older with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss. The system offers four user-selected preset profiles rather than a fully individualized professional fitting. It may suit someone who already wears glasses, wants situational help with conversations, dislikes in-ear aids and is comfortable recharging eyewear and using an app.

It is a less natural fit for someone seeking severe or profound hearing-loss support, finely individualized programming, long daily wear without recharging, or a device that works independently of eyewear. People who switch frequently between prescription glasses and sunglasses should consider that changing frames also means changing or losing the hearing assistance. Fit matters, too: independent testing noted that greater distance between the ears and temple speakers can reduce gain for some larger head sizes.

The Nuance app guides onboarding on compatible iOS and Android phones. The FDA documentation describes four presets intended for typical mild-to-moderate hearing-loss patterns, with the same amplification settings applied to both ears. - Charge the glasses on their charging base.
- Install and open the Nuance Audio app, then pair the glasses with the phone.
- Complete the app’s onboarding and choose the preset that best matches your perceived hearing needs.
- In a quiet room, complete the app’s voice or calibration exercise if prompted.
- Adjust volume and program settings while trying speech in quiet, moderate background noise and outdoors; also notice how your own voice sounds.
This is user fitting, not a substitute for a hearing evaluation. Sudden, one-sided or rapidly worsening hearing loss, or loss accompanied by pain, drainage or dizziness, calls for professional assessment rather than relying on an OTC device.

- Battery: HearingTracker reports a manufacturer claim of approximately eight hours under normal conditions. That is not an all-day guarantee; its review says charging takes about three hours on the tabletop magnetic pad.
- No Bluetooth audio streaming: The glasses use Bluetooth Low Energy for app connectivity, but independent testing reports no Bluetooth music streaming or phone-call audio. Do not buy them expecting the media and calling features of mainstream smart glasses.
- Open-ear noise limits: Directional processing does not eliminate background noise. Speech may remain difficult in a loud restaurant or when the talker is far away.
- Fit and feedback: Frame position and speaker-to-ear distance can affect gain; poor fit or higher volume may bring on whistling or an uncomfortable own-voice effect.
- Eyewear dependence: When the glasses are off, the hearing assistance is off too. A second pair of glasses does not automatically provide the same function.
- Exposure and lenses: HearingTracker lists an IPX4 rating, but check the current manufacturer guidance before exposing the glasses to rain or sweat. Prescription options, lens thickness, photochromic lenses and coatings may add cost.
Price and whether to try them
As of August 18, 2026, HearingTracker listed the glasses at approximately $1,200 per pair, with lens upgrades potentially costing more. Nuance’s US site advertises free returns within 30 days; check the current terms and lens charges before ordering. See the Nuance Audio product page and Nuance’s payment and shopping information.
The price is easiest to justify if you already wear glasses every day and value discreet, open-ear help for conversation more than streaming or long battery life. If possible, try a demonstration with the frame fitted properly and test speech in more than one environment before deciding. The roughly eight-hour reported battery claim, limited preset fitting and lack of streaming make it a specialized option rather than a universal replacement for hearing aids.

My verdict
Nuance Audio made a strong first impression in my CES demo, and later testing gives reason to take its speech performance seriously—especially in quiet. Its appeal is specific: discreet, open-ear assistance built into eyewear for adults with mild-to-moderate hearing difficulty. The same design brings constraints: battery life, preset rather than professional fitting, dependence on wearing the glasses and no music or call streaming. It is worth considering as a situational hearing aid, not assuming it replaces a conventional or professionally fitted solution.
