Yes—review your settings, but don’t confuse AI and cloud processing with continuous recording. Ray-Ban Meta glasses do not continuously save and upload everything around you. The privacy concern is that asking Meta AI about what you see, using voice features, or enabling cloud media processing can send information to Meta for processing and, in some workflows, retention and product improvement.
Why owners should check again
On April 29–30, 2025, Meta changed the privacy treatment and defaults associated with Ray-Ban Meta AI features. Contemporary reporting said camera use for Meta AI became enabled by default for some users, that the earlier voice-recording storage opt-out was removed or limited, and that users who did not want recordings used for AI training were told to delete them manually. The details may vary by account, region, app version, and glasses generation, but owners who set up their glasses before that change should not assume their old choices still describe the current setup. TechCrunch reported on the change on April 30, 2025.
That history is not evidence that the glasses record everything. It is a reason to check which specific features are enabled and what each one sends.

Ordinary capture, an AI question, cloud enhancement, and a social upload are different data paths. A photo transferred to your phone is not the same as an image submitted to Meta AI; sharing it to a social account creates another path.

Ray-Ban’s official FAQ says AI-processed photos are stored and used to improve Meta products and train Meta AI with help from trained reviewers. It also says AI processing can involve photo contents such as objects and text. Meta describes protections in certain AI-camera workflows, including removing identifiable information such as license plates or phone numbers, and says facial-recognition technology is not used in the described workflow. These statements do not mean every image is automatically anonymous or that human review cannot occur.
For practical purposes, treat an AI image request as potentially exposing everything in frame: faces, children, documents, screens, addresses, license plates, or private surroundings. A request to translate a sign or identify a plant can transmit more than just the sign or plant.
Are the glasses always recording?
No—not in the sense of continuously saving and uploading ambient audio or video. The camera is activated by the capture button or an intentional voice command, and voice interactions generally begin through “Hey Meta” or another enabled voice-control pathway. That is distinct from saying nothing leaves the device: an AI question can send an image to Meta, voice interactions can be processed, and cloud or social features can create other uploads.

Settings to review in the Meta AI app
Labels and paths can change with app versions, hardware, region, and feature rollout. Update the Meta AI app and glasses software first, select the specific paired glasses where prompted, and search the app settings for the labels below if a path differs.
Meta AI and Camera use
- Open the Meta AI app.
- Tap the gear icon.
- Tap Meta AI, or select your glasses and then tap Meta AI.
- Review the Meta AI and Camera use controls.
If you do not need visual questions, translation, object identification, or scene descriptions, turn off Camera use or Meta AI. The trade-off is losing or limiting those visual AI features. Turning off cloud media processing is a separate choice and does not necessarily disable AI camera questions, livestreaming, or social uploads.
“Respond without ‘Hey Meta’”
In the app, open the glasses or voice settings, find Hey Meta preferences, and turn off Respond without “Hey Meta” if you do not want the short follow-up listening window. The precise location can vary; search settings for “Hey Meta preferences” if needed. This changes follow-up behavior, not every microphone use: calls, audio, notifications, or other enabled services may still rely on connected features.

Look under Settings → Glasses & privacy, then the selected glasses and privacy or data controls, for cloud media processing. Turn it off if you do not want cloud enhancement and related organization features. The stated 30-day temporary storage period applies to this cloud media processing workflow, not necessarily to AI camera requests or media separately shared to social services.

AI activity, voice activity, and gallery media
Open the app’s AI tab or activity log to review conversations and voice activity. Delete unwanted interactions or recordings using the controls currently shown. Then review the gallery and remove cloud-processed items you no longer need. Meta says in its AI system card that deleting media from the gallery also deletes it from Meta’s cloud in the documented workflow.
Deletion is not a promise that every copy disappears immediately from every backup, moderation, legal-retention, or aggregated-data system. Meta’s Privacy Policy says retention and deletion depend on the product, applicable policy, and legal obligations.
Connected accounts and phone permissions
Under Communication, review Facebook and Instagram connections and disconnect accounts you do not need. Also review Messenger, WhatsApp, music services, and other integrations. Disconnecting an account does not necessarily remove Stories already shared; delete those directly in Facebook or Instagram.

On your phone, review the Meta AI app’s Bluetooth, microphone, camera, photos or storage, location, notifications, and background activity permissions. iOS and Android use different menus. Revoking permissions can impair pairing, imports, notifications, voice controls, or location-dependent features, so change them with those trade-offs in mind.

Choose a privacy setup that matches your use

Deletion, disconnection, and resetting are not the same
- Delete AI activity: remove unwanted conversations or voice activity from the app’s activity controls.
- Delete gallery media: Meta documents that deleting media from the gallery also deletes the cloud copy in that workflow.
- Remove social posts: delete already-published Stories or other shares in Facebook or Instagram; disconnecting accounts alone is not enough.
- Factory reset before selling: reset the glasses using the procedure for that generation. Ray-Ban’s FAQ says first-generation hardware can be reset by holding the power switch and capture button until the notification LED turns solid orange; newer hardware may use a different sequence.
A reset removes captures and account association from the glasses, but it does not undo media already uploaded or shared. Uninstalling the Meta AI app is likewise not the same as deleting account activity or cloud media.
What the LED can—and cannot—tell you
The front-facing LED is designed to signal photo or video capture, but it does not explain where media goes, how long it is retained, or whether it is used in an AI workflow. Its behavior also differs for some AI-camera features and between hardware generations. It may be hard for someone nearby to notice, and it says nothing about audio-only voice interactions.
In July 2026, Meta announced that affected newer AI glasses would detect tampering with the privacy LED and disable the camera when tampering is detected. That safeguard does not make the LED a guarantee that no data is processed or shared. Meta’s July 2026 announcement describes the change.

Human review and other people’s privacy
Meta’s product FAQ says trained reviewers may help improve its AI using AI-processed photos. Separately, Ars Technica reported on March 5, 2026 allegations that contractors reviewed sensitive footage captured by Ray-Ban Meta glasses. That reporting is not proof that every user’s footage is routinely watched. A prudent approach is to assume media submitted to an AI or cloud-processing workflow may be retained or reviewed under the applicable policy unless Meta clearly says otherwise.
Ask before recording people where practical, and avoid using the glasses in bathrooms, changing rooms, medical settings, schools, workplaces with restrictions, courtrooms, or confidential meetings. Local rules and venue policies may impose limits beyond the glasses’ technical settings.
