iFixit gave the Google Pixel Watch 4 a provisional 9/10 repairability score, calling it the most repairable smartwatch it had evaluated. The reason is structural: screws and replaceable O-ring gaskets make key parts easier to reach than in adhesive-heavy watches. That is a meaningful design change, not a promise that every owner can repair the watch easily—or restore its factory water resistance after opening it.
What iFixit’s 9/10 score means
In its teardown published October 10, 2025, iFixit rated the Pixel Watch 4 9 out of 10, provisionally. The score evaluates how straightforward it is to disassemble a device and replace components with the available parts and documentation. It is not a durability rating, a safety certification, or a calculation of total repair cost. Nor does it measure an individual owner’s skills or whether a qualified repairer is available nearby.
iFixit’s “most repairable smartwatch” description is its assessment, not an industry-wide certification. The organization also discloses a business relationship with Google; readers should weigh that context alongside the teardown’s specific, inspectable design findings. iFixit’s teardown and score and its smartwatch score criteria provide further detail.

Earlier Pixel Watch generations were criticized for being effectively sealed and difficult to repair. The Pixel Watch 4 takes a different approach: two external screws beneath the band area help secure the back, and O-rings provide sealing at key points. The screws also work as part of a hinge-like arrangement that compresses the rear seal when tightened. This is a serviceability change in the watch’s construction, not just a new set of repair instructions.

iFixit reports that it opened the watch within minutes using 1IP, 2IP and 5IP Torx Plus bits, a spudger and tweezers, without heat or solvent for initial access. That is unusually accessible for a smartwatch, but it is not equivalent to opening a watch with an ordinary screwdriver. The 1IP bit in particular is uncommon, and small components and connectors still demand careful handling.
Battery replacement: possible, with real caveats
The battery is held by screws rather than adhesive, and iFixit’s teardown shows it can be removed after disconnection. The 41mm battery is listed as 321 mAh and the 45mm battery as 450 mAh; iFixit measured the battery energy at 1.747 Wh, compared with 1.184 Wh in the Pixel Watch 2.
When checked on August 18, 2026, iFixit listed genuine batteries for both sizes at $49.99 each. That is the part price, not the cost of a completed repair: shipping, taxes, tools and labor may add to it, and prices and stock can change. Confirm the watch’s size before ordering. A battery swap is the most persuasive DIY use case for a technically confident owner with the right bit, magnification, a clean workspace and patience. It is less attractive if the watch is under warranty, if the owner depends on its water protection, or if there is any doubt about safely reconnecting and reassembling the small parts.
Display and other repairs
The screen is replaceable, and its sealing uses an O-ring gasket rather than relying on adhesive alone. iFixit listed genuine screen assemblies for both 41mm and 45mm models at $99.99 each when checked August 18, 2026. That price is only the part; professional labor can make a display repair uneconomical, especially if the watch has other damage or is nearing the end of its useful life.
Display work is more demanding than the headline score may suggest. It involves careful handling of the fragile screen, its connector and gasket, followed by precise reassembly. The uncommon 1IP Torx Plus driver is another practical hurdle. A cheap replacement seal does not guarantee a successful repair or restored water resistance.

iFixit also lists or documents repairs and parts for the back sensor glass, vibration motor, display and screw O-rings, plus small adhesive or conductive-tape components. The vibration motor is notable for using sturdy pogo-pin contacts rather than a fragile flex-cable connection. The motor was listed at $24.99, display O-rings at $3.99 and screw O-rings at $2.99 on the same August 18, 2026 check; these are changeable parts-page observations, not guaranteed prices.

Does opening it preserve IP68 and 5 ATM protection?
No repairability score can answer that for an individual repaired watch. Google says the Pixel Watch 4 is designed to meet IP68 and 5 ATM protection ratings when it leaves the factory, but warns that water and dust resistance are not permanent and may diminish or be lost through wear, damage, repair or disassembly. Google’s safety and protection guidance is explicit on this point.
Replaceable gaskets make re-sealing more plausible than an adhesive-only design, but they do not prove a particular watch is sealed. A misplaced or damaged O-ring, contamination, an improperly tightened screw or imperfect assembly can compromise protection. Do not assume a self-repaired watch is safe for swimming or water-intensive use. If water resistance matters, use professional service and ask whether the repair includes an appropriate seal check; the factory rating should not be treated as guaranteed after opening.

Parts, manuals and official service
Google released service manuals for both 41mm and 45mm Pixel Watch 4 models at launch, according to iFixit. The manuals do not include complete schematics, one of the reasons iFixit stopped short of a perfect score. iFixit provides repair guides and a parts catalog, including genuine Google parts supplied through its official parts channel where listed.
Google also provides repair routes and service-manual information through its Pixel Watch repair options and repair and service guidance. Availability depends on country and repair type. In the United States, Google lists mail-in service and selected walk-in options; that should not be assumed to apply everywhere. Check the route for your country, and review the applicable warranty terms rather than assuming that opening the watch automatically voids all coverage.

- Consider DIY if the watch is out of warranty, the repair is a battery or a small replaceable component, you have the correct tools and experience, and you accept that post-repair water resistance may be uncertain.
- Prefer professional service for a display, connector or board problem; if you rely on the watch for swimming; or if warranty handling and sealing matter more than minimizing cost. Google’s repair availability varies by region.
- Compare with replacement if the screen is damaged alongside other parts, labor would bring the total near the price of another watch, or the device has little useful life remaining. A $99.99 screen alone is not the final repair bill.
The decision is not only financial. A repair can extend the watch’s useful life, avoid replacing a familiar device and reduce electronic waste. A battery replacement is more compelling when the watch has meaningful software-support life left. But without a quoted service cost and a known replacement price for the reader’s market, it would be misleading to say repair is always cheaper.
Why the score matters—and where it stops
The Pixel Watch 4 earns its high score because access is unusually direct, the battery is practically replaceable, the display and gaskets are supported by parts and guides, and Google made manuals available for both sizes. The limits matter just as much: no complete schematics, specialized tooling for some work, delicate components, potentially expensive display repair, regional service gaps and no guarantee that disassembly preserves water protection.
For DIY enthusiasts, it is a notable step forward. For ordinary buyers, the design is useful insurance against some failures even if a professional does the work. For anyone who needs dependable water resistance, the safest interpretation is more cautious: repairability makes service possible, but only a suitable repair and verification can address sealing. The strongest takeaway is that a slim, sealed smartwatch can be designed for service—not that every repair is simple.
