No. The Samsung Galaxy Watch5 is water-resistant, not waterproof. It has a 5ATM rating plus IP68-class water and dust protection, and Samsung says the Watch5 series can withstand up to 5 feet of water for up to 30 minutes under specified conditions. That makes ordinary shallow swimming possible, but it does not make the watch safe for diving, hot tubs, saunas, high-pressure water, or every ocean and water-sports situation.
Waterproof versus water-resistant
“Waterproof” suggests permanent, unconditional protection. Consumer watches do not provide that guarantee. The Watch5’s resistance is conditional and can decline after drops, cracks, aging seals, repairs, chemicals, heat, or repeated pressure exposure. Surviving one swim does not guarantee that it will survive the next.
Samsung describes the watch as water-resistant and warns that it is not indestructible. If the case, glass, rear sensor area, or display is damaged or separated, treat the original water-resistance rating as unreliable.

What do 5ATM and IP68 mean?
| Rating | What it indicates | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| 5ATM | Resistance to pressure equivalent to a controlled 50-metre freshwater test. | Permission to dive to 50 metres or withstand fast-moving water. |
| IP6X | Dust-tight protection under the relevant laboratory test. | Protection from every contaminant or damaged seal. |
| IPX8/IP68 | Protection against water ingress during a specified immersion test. | A guarantee for heat, jets, waves, chemicals, impacts, or prolonged real-world immersion. |
Samsung-associated documentation describes the 5ATM test as stationary submersion in 50 metres of fresh water for 10 minutes under ISO 22810:2010 conditions. Real swimming involves movement, pressure changes, impacts and temperature variation. 5ATM does not mean the Watch5 is safe at 50 metres underwater. See Samsung’s water-resistance guidance and Watch5 support and manuals.
#1 Best Overall
- Rugged Titanium Case: Durable titanium design built for outdoor activities and demanding environments.
Can you swim with the Galaxy Watch5?
Generally, yes. Ordinary, shallow pool swimming is the lowest-risk use when the watch is undamaged and you can rinse and dry it afterward. Calm, shallow open water is possible, but waves, currents, salt, sand and collisions make it riskier.
| Activity | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Rain, sweat, hand washing | Generally suitable. |
| Pool swimming | Generally supported in shallow water with precautions. |
| Calm, shallow seawater | Possible; rinse immediately with fresh water and dry thoroughly. |
| Routine showering | Best avoided, particularly with hot, soapy or pressurized water. |
| Snorkeling, scuba or deep-water swimming | Avoid. |
| Surfing, water skiing, jet skiing or fast rivers | Avoid high pressure, speed and impact. |
Water Lock mode
Turn on Water lock before swimming if you want to prevent accidental screen touches. It does not improve sealing, pressure resistance or chemical protection. The control-panel location and exit gesture can vary with your installed One UI Watch version. The Watch5 manual identifies Water lock as a mode for exercising in water.

Ocean, pool chlorine and seawater
Salt, chlorine, disinfectants and sand can affect seals, finishes, buttons, speakers and charging contacts over time. Samsung advises rinsing the watch with fresh water after seawater exposure and drying it thoroughly. Rinsing reduces residue; it cannot guarantee that corrosion or failure will not occur.

Showers combine pressurized streams, hot water, soap or shampoo, steam and sudden temperature changes. Hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas add sustained heat, vapor and chemicals. Samsung advises avoiding high-pressure water and sudden temperature changes, so removing the watch before these activities is the safest practice.

What to do after the Watch5 gets wet
- Remove it when practical and wipe the case, screen, buttons and underside with a clean, soft cloth.
- After pool or seawater exposure, rinse with clean, fresh water.
- Let water drain naturally and air-dry the watch completely.
- Do not use compressed air, a hair dryer, direct heat or rice.
- Do not charge until the watch and charging contacts are fully dry.
- If the speaker sounds muffled, use the installed speaker-clearing or water-ejection function, if available.
If the watch stops working, do not keep charging or heating it. Contact Samsung or an authorized service center and explain whether the exposure involved salt water, chlorine, heat, pressure or an impact.
What weakens water resistance?
- Drops, hard impacts and case deformation
- Cracked glass, display separation or damage around the rear sensor
- Prior opening, battery replacement or other repair
- Aging seals and adhesives
- Chlorine, salt, solvents and other chemicals
- Extreme heat, steam and sudden temperature changes
- Improper cleaning or repeated high-pressure exposure
Samsung states that dropping or striking the watch can lessen its water resistance. A used Watch5 that has been opened, repaired or visibly damaged should not be treated as factory-sealed.

Does Samsung’s warranty cover water damage?
Do not assume it does. Water resistance is not a liquid-damage warranty. Coverage depends on the country, the applicable warranty document, the diagnosis and the cause of failure. Check Samsung’s current regional warranty terms before relying on coverage.
Watch5 versus Watch5 Pro
The standard Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch5 Pro are separate products, with different case designs, model numbers and regional documentation. Bluetooth and LTE editions, condition and repair history also matter. Confirm the exact model’s manual rather than assuming every Watch5-family device has identical construction or guidance.

Galaxy Watch5 water-resistance checklist
- Is the case free of cracks, gaps and display separation?
- Has it avoided recent drops, opening or repair?
- Is the water shallow, calm and not hot or pressurized?
- Can you rinse and dry it afterward?
- Will you avoid diving, fast water sports, steam rooms and hot tubs?
- Will you wait until it is completely dry before charging?
If any answer is no, remove the watch.
Should you upgrade?
A clean Watch5 remains adequate for cautious swimming. Newer Galaxy Watch models may offer longer software support or different construction, but no smartwatch is immune to liquid damage. Samsung’s current catalog lists newer models, including the Watch8 series and Ultra line, with model-specific ratings; verify the documentation for the exact watch you are considering at Samsung’s watch catalog.
