The Samsung Galaxy Watch5 is water-resistant, not permanently or universally waterproof. Samsung says you can use it for pool swimming and shallow-water swimming, as well as ordinary exposure such as rain and sweat. Do not use it for scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, water-skiing, fast-moving water, or high-pressure water.
The key distinction: its “50 meters” rating comes from a controlled, still-water test—not a promise that it is safe to dive to 50 meters.
What the Galaxy Watch5’s 5ATM and IP ratings mean
Samsung lists the Galaxy Watch5 with 5ATM and IPX8 water resistance, plus IP6X dust resistance. Some Samsung product specifications use the label IP68 instead. These are rating labels used in product specifications and support materials; check the documentation for your region and model. Neither label means the watch is immune to water damage in every situation.

It does not mean the watch is safe to operate at 50 meters, stay submerged indefinitely, or withstand the pressure and impact of diving, jumping into water, strong currents, or jets.

IPX8 refers to a separate test under IEC 60529: submersion in 1.5 meters of still fresh water for 30 minutes. IP6X is the dust-resistance component, not another water rating. Both water ratings describe defined test conditions, not every real-world activity. See Samsung’s Galaxy Watch water- and dust-resistance guidance and its water-resistance support page.
Can you swim, shower, or wear it in the ocean?
Samsung’s guidance allows pool swimming and shallow-water swimming. The practical risk still depends on the watch’s condition and the water exposure: a static test does not reproduce waves, impacts, forceful spray, or a worn seal.

| Situation | Practical answer |
|---|---|
| Rain, sweat, hand-washing splashes | Generally suitable for ordinary exposure described by Samsung. |
| Brief, ordinary shower | Usually a reasonable everyday use, but not risk-free. Avoid very hot water, steam, harsh soaps, and forceful jets. Do not rely on water resistance if the watch is damaged, repaired, or heavily aged. |
| Pool swimming | Yes, within Samsung’s stated limits. Rinse off pool water and dry the watch afterward. |
| Shallow ocean swimming | Samsung allows shallow-water use, but saltwater can affect water resistance. Rinse promptly with fresh water and dry thoroughly. |
| Deep swimming, jumping, or water slides | Avoid treating these as covered by the 5ATM figure. Depth, impact, and moving water differ from the static test. |
| Lakes and rivers | Water chemistry is only one concern; current, sediment, debris, and impact matter. Avoid fast-moving water. |
| Hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms | Avoid or use strong caution. Heat, steam, chemicals, and pressure are not equivalent to still-water test conditions. |
| Leather or hybrid band | Do not swim or shower with it. Samsung warns these bands are not suitable for water exposure. |
Swimming mode or Water Lock can help prevent accidental screen touches, but it does not strengthen the seal or make an otherwise unsuitable activity safe. The watch body’s rating also does not make every strap water-safe.

Water activities to avoid
Samsung specifically says not to use the Watch5 for snorkeling, diving, scuba diving, surfing, water-skiing, swimming in fast-moving water such as a river, or exposure to high-pressure cleaning equipment. These activities can involve pressure, speed, turbulence, or impact that a still-water laboratory test does not represent.

For the same practical reason, treat pressure washers, forceful water jets, and repeated hard impacts against water as risks. Do not interpret the 50-meter figure as permission for any of them. The Watch5 is not a dive computer or a diving watch.
What to do after swimming
- Remove the watch from the water.
- After pool or seawater exposure, rinse it with clean fresh water to remove chlorine, salt, and residue.
- Dry it thoroughly with a soft, clean cloth. Let moisture clear before charging, and do not place a visibly wet watch on its charger.
- If the speaker sounds muffled, allow more time for water to clear. Do not insert objects into openings or use compressed air.
- If charging, the display, buttons, sensors, or other functions remain abnormal, stop wearing it in water and contact Samsung or an authorized service provider.
Rinsing and drying are care steps, not a guarantee against water ingress. Samsung advises that water resistance can diminish over time.

When should you stop trusting the water resistance?
Water resistance is not permanent. Age, worn seals or adhesives, a drop, impact, cracked screen or casing, abrasion, chemical exposure, or a repair can compromise protection—even if damage is not obvious. Opening the watch can also affect its seal. A successful swim in the past does not prove it will remain water-resistant in the future.
Be especially cautious with a Watch5 that has been dropped, repaired, opened, or used for years. If you notice persistent condensation, a display problem, charging trouble, or other abnormal behavior after water exposure, keep it out of water and arrange an inspection.

If your Watch5 malfunctions after water exposure
Dry the exterior carefully and do not charge the watch while it is wet. Give a muffled speaker time to clear, but do not open the case or try to force water out with tools or compressed air. If the screen, buttons, sensors, speaker, or charging remain abnormal, contact Samsung or an authorized service provider. Whether a water-related fault is covered depends on the warranty terms in your country, the device inspection, and the circumstances; check the applicable terms rather than assuming coverage.
Should you keep using an older Watch5?
If your watch is undamaged and you need it for ordinary exposure or controlled pool swimming, following Samsung’s limits and rinse-and-dry guidance may be sufficient. If it is cracked, has been repaired, is unreliable, or has seen years of wear, do not assume its original rating still offers the same protection; get it inspected or keep it out of water. Replacing it with another Galaxy Watch does not make diving or high-pressure water safe—follow the new model’s own instructions, too.
Final verdict
The Galaxy Watch5 is suitable for ordinary water exposure and, within Samsung’s stated limits, pool or shallow-water swimming. Treat it as a water-resistant fitness watch—not a permanently waterproof device, a 50-meter dive watch, or equipment for high-pressure water sports.
