No—not as an actively supported smartwatch. As of 2026, Samsung’s Tizen-watch content services have ended, so Gear S2 owners should not expect a normal way to download or reinstall apps and watch faces. Samsung Pay is not a dependable use case, and ongoing firmware or security updates should not be expected. A working watch may still handle timekeeping, alarms, basic activity tracking, and some features already installed, but whether it pairs with a current phone is uncertain.
That distinction matters: still usable does not mean still supported. Keep one if it already meets basic needs; do not buy one expecting a modern smartwatch experience.
What happened to Gear S2 support?
The Gear S2 runs Samsung’s older Tizen wearable platform. Samsung’s Tizen-watch content shutdown affected Gear devices, including the Gear S2; it was not a shutdown of the watch hardware itself. Samsung’s regional support notice explicitly names Gear S2 and says Tizen apps, including Samsung Pay/Wallet, can no longer be downloaded. Samsung’s published termination schedule describes the staged closure.
The dates in Samsung notices vary because the shutdown happened in stages and regional communications did not use identical milestones. Paid content sales stopped on September 30, 2024; new downloads of free content were scheduled to stop May 31, 2025; subsequent notices described broader service closure on June 25, 2025. Temporary recovery of previously purchased content through Galaxy Store’s My Apps area also had a 2025 cutoff. Those windows have all passed. The practical result in 2026 is the same: there is no dependable official route to get Tizen watch content.

Samsung’s Tizen device documentation identifies the Gear S2 as a legacy Tizen watch. Developer material or a surviving old app listing is not evidence of current consumer support.

What can still work?
The end of the store does not automatically stop a Gear S2 from turning on. If its hardware is healthy, it may still tell time, run alarms, display locally available watch faces, track basic activity, and run onboard apps that do not need an online service. Local music or other content may remain accessible where the model and setup support it. Bluetooth notifications or other phone-connected features may work if the watch can still pair and the required software is available.
These are possibilities, not guarantees. Results depend on the exact Gear S2 variant, its condition and software, what is already installed, the phone and operating-system version, region, and whether a feature depends on a service that has changed or disappeared. Previously installed content surviving the shutdown does not mean it can be recovered if deleted or lost.

- Getting apps or faces: Samsung’s Tizen-watch content services have ended. Do not buy the watch expecting to browse for new content or retrieve old purchases.
- Restoring content: A reset, device change, or app deletion may leave you without a way to reinstall third-party apps, paid faces, or other content.
- Payments: Samsung’s notice includes Samsung Pay/Wallet among content that can no longer be downloaded and warns that installed payment software may later stop working because it needs maintenance and security updates. An icon that opens is not proof that payments remain supported.
- New phone features: Pairing and notifications are not assured on current phones, and compatibility lists can describe historical support rather than a working setup today.
- Security and health expectations: Do not expect a current security-update commitment or modern medical and health-monitoring functions. The Gear S2 is not a substitute for a current health device.
Samsung’s guidance for Tizen watches also makes clear that some service behavior can depend on maintenance and security requirements. For that reason, do not use a Gear S2 for banking, authentication, or another security-sensitive task even if a legacy app appears to function.

Will it pair with a modern Android phone or iPhone?
There is no safe blanket promise. The Gear S2 was designed for an older generation of companion software. Samsung’s current phone-and-watch compatibility guidance warns that support varies by model and that some older Gear watches are not supported on non-Samsung Android phones. Features can also be limited outside Samsung phones.
- Samsung Galaxy phone: It may work in some combinations, but test the exact phone and Gear S2 before relying on it. A current Galaxy phone is not automatically compatible just because both devices are Samsung.
- Other Android phone: Treat compatibility as especially uncertain. Legacy plug-ins, permissions, Android version, and the phone manufacturer can all matter.
- iPhone: An old App Store listing names Gear S2, but that listing is not confirmation of present-day compatibility with a current iPhone or iOS release.
Before buying, check the exact watch model, phone model, operating-system version, and region. If possible, pair the watch with the buyer’s own phone before accepting the purchase. A successful historical compatibility listing is not the same as a current guarantee.
Before you reset the watch or change phones
Do not factory-reset a working Gear S2 until you have decided you can live without its existing apps and faces. Samsung’s former content-recovery route ended in 2025, so a reset can remove software you may not be able to restore.

- Confirm the watch currently pairs with your phone and that notifications or other essential functions work.
- Keep useful apps and faces installed; do not delete them just to troubleshoot.
- Check that you have the correct charger and know the exact model and variant.
- Assume a reset or move to a new phone may be irreversible from the ecosystem perspective.
If pairing fails, check the exact phone and watch models, operating-system versions, region, Bluetooth and notification permissions, and availability of required legacy companion components. There is no universal fix once necessary plug-ins or services are unavailable.

Is the Gear S2 still a good basic watch?
It can be enjoyable as a vintage wearable if you already own one, or find a tested unit very cheaply, and only need simple functions. Its rotating bezel, compact round design, AMOLED screen, and straightforward Tizen interface were distinctive strengths for its era. Samsung’s developer material documents its place in the Tizen watch family.
But a buyer in 2026 should not treat it as a current smartwatch. It has no dependable access to a modern app ecosystem, no assured new faces, no reliable payment support, and no active security-maintenance expectation. Its older fitness functions are not equivalent to current health tracking, and its phone integration may fail on a modern device.

The Gear S2 dates to 2015, making even an unused example old hardware. Battery degradation is a central risk: runtime may be poor, charging may be inconsistent, and a replacement battery is not a guarantee that the watch will be dependable. Repair can introduce additional risks or compromise seals. Check whether the correct charging dock is included and available for the exact model.
Inspect the display for wear or burn-in, test the bezel and buttons, vibration and sensors, and watch how quickly the battery drains during a real charge-and-use test. Do not treat an old unit as waterproof: years of aging, previous repairs, and seal wear make any original water-resistance claim unsuitable as a promise about a particular used watch.

LTE versions need extra scrutiny. Cellular usefulness depends on the exact model, carrier, network technology, region, and plan provisioning. Do not assume an LTE Gear S2 can activate or use modern cellular service. Also confirm whether the seller includes a return window. An unopened old watch is not necessarily a better buy; the battery has still aged.
Should you keep, buy, or replace one?
Keep it if
- You already own it and it still works with your phone.
- You mainly want time, alarms, basic notifications, or local features.
- The battery is acceptable and you do not depend on payments, security updates, or health monitoring.
- You are willing to keep the current setup and accept that a reset or phone replacement may end its usefulness.
Avoid buying it if
- You expect current apps, new watch faces, Samsung Pay, or modern health features.
- You need guaranteed compatibility with a current iPhone or non-Samsung Android phone.
- You want an actively maintained daily smartwatch or security updates.
- The price is close to a newer supported tracker or watch.
If you buy one anyway
Pay only a very low price, insist on a return option, and test the watch with your exact phone before accepting it. Confirm the variant, charger, battery runtime, buttons, bezel, screen, and Bluetooth behavior. Make sure any apps or faces you require are already installed, and do not reset it immediately. Avoid listings that sell it primarily on claims about Samsung Pay, LTE, waterproofing, or store access.
What to choose instead
Choose based on your phone and the job you need done. Android users who want a supported smartwatch should look at a current Samsung Galaxy Watch or another current Wear OS watch. iPhone users should choose an Apple Watch, which requires an iPhone. If you mainly need steps, sleep, heart rate, alarms, and longer battery life, a current budget fitness tracker may be more practical. For exercise, outdoor use, or endurance, compare current Garmin models. Check current model availability, features, warranty, and price before choosing; there is no need to pay for smartwatch features you will not use.
