Oakley Meta Vanguard may be the best smart glasses I’ve used for running, hiking, and cycling—but they are not the best everyday smart glasses for everyone. At $499 in the US, they make the most sense for athletes who want a secure sport fit, hands-free point-of-view video, open-ear audio, and spoken access to selected Garmin metrics. They make much less sense if you want ordinary-looking glasses, all-day recording, a visual display, or a lightweight pair for indoor and evening use.
That distinction matters. Vanguard is not augmented-reality eyewear: there is no heads-up display, navigation arrow, or pace readout floating in front of your eye. Its appeal is practical rather than futuristic—capture what you see, hear music and calls without blocking your ears, and ask Meta AI for supported information while your phone stays in your pocket.
The use case that makes Vanguard click
Smart glasses are most useful when reaching for a phone is inconvenient. That describes a trail run, a bike ride, a hike, a climb, or any workout where stopping to unlock a screen breaks rhythm or creates a safety problem.

That combination is why I find the glasses more convincing as athletic equipment than as a general-purpose wearable. Their advantage is integration and convenience—not the best standalone camera, audio system, battery, or training display.
What Oakley Meta Vanguard actually are
Vanguard are camera- and AI-enabled sports sunglasses made by Oakley with Meta technology. They include:
- A centered ultra-wide 12MP camera for photographs and video.
- Open-ear speakers and microphones for music, calls, and voice interaction.
- Meta AI, activated by voice or the controls on the frame.
- A dedicated action button for quicker capture or assistant access.
- Touch controls for functions such as playback and volume.
- Garmin integration for supported workout metrics when paired with a compatible Garmin device.
- Strava sharing and post-activity overlays, subject to current account and regional availability.
- A charging case and the Meta AI smartphone app.
They are not display-equipped AR glasses. Garmin information is delivered through audio, with Oakley also describing a glanceable status indicator inside the frame; you do not see a full workout dashboard or visual navigation overlay in the lens. A compatible smartphone and the Meta AI app are required for operation and media management (Oakley product details).

Why they work so well for outdoor training
The design is more purposeful than the lifestyle-first shape of Ray-Ban Meta. Vanguard uses a full-wrap sports frame, Oakley’s Three-Point Fit, grippy Unobtainium temple tips, and interchangeable nose pads. Oakley also positions the frame as helmet-compatible for cycling (Oakley’s performance features).
In practice, the fit is designed to resist sliding when you sweat or move quickly. The centered camera is another meaningful choice: unlike a side-mounted camera, it produces a viewpoint closer to where your head is actually facing. That makes first-person footage feel more natural during running and riding.
The trade-off is bulk. An independent hands-on test measured the glasses at approximately 66 grams and reported nose soreness after a long hike followed by a two-hour run (Android Central’s hands-on test). The secure nose-pad pressure that helps during hard movement can become uncomfortable over several hours. Face shape, nose bridge, helmet fit, and lens configuration will all matter, so try them on if possible.

Camera and video: useful, but not an action-camera replacement
The camera is one of Vanguard’s strongest features, especially when the alternative is stopping to mount or remove another device. Oakley lists a centered ultra-wide 12MP camera, while Android Central reports still images at 3024 × 4032 pixels. Video modes include 1080p and 3K.
For fast movement, 3K is not automatically the best setting. Testing found that 1080p at 60 frames per second could look smoother during a run than 3K footage, where visible movement was more distracting. Stabilization options include Auto, Low, Medium, and High. Higher stabilization may improve usability but can crop the image or give it a more processed appearance.
Hyperlapse and slow motion are useful additions for trails, training clips, and social posts. The ultra-wide perspective captures plenty of surroundings, but distant people and scenery can look small. The footage is also portrait-oriented, which may disappoint cyclists and landscape creators expecting conventional horizontal action-camera video. A hat brim, helmet edge, or part of the frame can enter the shot, and music playing through the glasses may be audible in recordings.
My practical view is that Vanguard is excellent for spontaneous clips and hands-free documentation. It is not the right tool if your priority is maximum image quality, landscape-first framing, strong low-light performance, long continuous recording, or a replaceable battery.
Garmin integration: the feature that separates Vanguard
Garmin integration is potentially Vanguard’s most valuable sport feature, but it should not be confused with replacing a Garmin watch or bike computer.

- “What’s my current pace?”
- “What’s my average pace?”
- “How much elevation have I gained?”
- “What’s my cadence?”
- “What heart-rate zone am I in?”
- “What’s my running power?”
In hands-on testing, several Garmin metrics were retrieved quickly, but not every statistic was recognized. The wake phrase—“Hey Meta”—can also feel awkward during a hard effort, unless follow-up interaction is enabled. Spoken answers are useful when looking at your wrist is inconvenient; they are redundant if you are already comfortable checking your watch.
Garmin hardware is sold separately. You also need to confirm that your particular Garmin device, phone, operating system, account, region, and the current software support the features you want. Treat this as access to supported metrics, not as a promise that every field in Garmin Connect will be available by voice.
What Strava adds
Strava is mainly useful around and after the activity rather than as a replacement for a cycling computer or running watch. Oakley promotes sharing captured activities to Strava, post-activity data overlays, Strava stickers for social posts, and activity history that Meta AI can use for insights (Oakley’s Vanguard product page).

Do not assume the glasses include a Strava subscription, or that every overlay and AI feature is available everywhere. Connect the accounts and test the workflow before relying on it for an event.
Audio, calls, and Meta AI outdoors
Open-ear audio is a natural match for running and cycling because it leaves environmental sound available. Oakley says the speakers provide up to six hours of continuous audio, and independent testing found them designed to remain usable in wind. That does not mean they sound like sealed headphones, and some sound leakage is possible in quiet places.
Voice control is convenient for starting a recording, asking a question, or controlling media without touching a phone. It is less discreet in a group, and wind, traffic, and conversation can affect recognition. AI answers are also not the same as coaching: asking for a heart-rate zone is a metric lookup, not a structured training plan or a substitute for a coach.

Battery: nine hours is not nine hours of heavy use
Oakley’s published figures are:

Those figures should not be read as nine hours of continuous recording, music, Autocapture, and frequent AI requests. In Android Central’s demanding two-hour run test—continuous music, 24 automatic five-second clips, seven additional 30-second videos, and roughly 20 Garmin-related AI requests—the glasses ended at 49%, suggesting about four hours under that unusually heavy workload.

Cold temperatures, firmware changes, and repeated video transfers can also affect real-world runtime. Charge both the glasses and the case before an event, and complete setup at home rather than at the trailhead.
Lens choices and changing light
Oakley’s US listing shows multiple configurations, including Prizm Road, Prizm 24K, Prizm Black, Prizm Sapphire, Prizm Rose Gold, and a Prizm Transitions option as checked on August 16, 2026 (Oakley US catalog).
Fixed dark lenses can be excellent in bright sun but awkward indoors or after sunset. A Transitions configuration is more versatile, although availability varies by country and prescription setup. A photochromic lens also does not guarantee good nighttime video: lens transmission and camera low-light performance are separate issues.
Prescription buyers should confirm the exact lens option, availability, thickness, fitting, and turnaround time. The wide or universal-fit listing is not proof that every face will be comfortable.
Ruggedness and weather limits
Vanguard carries an IP67 dust and water-resistance rating, documented in Oakley’s safety and warranty documentation. That supports use around sweat, rain, dust, and accidental splashes under the applicable test conditions.

IP67 does not mean unlimited waterproofing. I would not treat Vanguard as suitable for swimming, diving, saltwater exposure, or high-pressure water. After a wet workout, dry the glasses and charging contacts before placing them in the case. Wind and rain can still affect microphones, speakers, and footage even when the hardware survives the conditions.
The privacy and social trade-off
A camera on your face changes the etiquette of a workout. The camera-status LED is intended to indicate recording, but you should still ask permission before recording identifiable people and avoid assuming that automatic capture is socially neutral.
Autocapture can create useful memories at mile markers or changes in intensity. Android Central also found that it could record at awkward moments when other people were nearby. Review its settings before using it in races, gyms, group rides, or crowded trails.

There are other compromises: voice commands can be conspicuous, speakers may leak audio, captured media passes through Meta’s app ecosystem, and fitness questions involve data from a connected Garmin account. Buyers who are uncomfortable with Meta accounts, AI processing, or recording in public should consider conventional sports sunglasses, earbuds, and a separate camera instead.
Reasons not to buy Vanguard
- They are heavy for everyday eyewear. Approximately 66 grams and a pressure-oriented sport fit may become tiring.
- They are sunglasses first. Fixed dark lenses are inconvenient indoors and at night, even with a photochromic option available in some configurations.
- They have no visual display. You cannot see pace, maps, or directions in the lens.
- They depend on a phone and Meta AI app. The $499 purchase does not remove the need for a smartphone or app ecosystem.
- Garmin features require separate hardware. They are most compelling if you already own a compatible Garmin device.
- Heavy capture drains the battery. The normal-use rating is not a continuous-recording promise.
- The camera is wide and portrait-oriented. That is not ideal for distant subjects, landscapes, or conventional action footage.
- Privacy may outweigh convenience. Cameras, automatic capture, voice commands, and Meta’s ecosystem are not for everyone.

Vanguard’s real competition is not only Ray-Ban Meta. For many athletes, conventional sports sunglasses plus earbuds and an action camera will be cheaper, easier to replace, less dependent on Meta, and better at their individual jobs. Vanguard wins by putting enough of those functions in one device.
My verdict
Oakley Meta Vanguard is a strong candidate for the best sport-focused smart glasses available, and the “best smart glasses ever—for me” claim is defensible if “best” means running, cycling, hiking, and outdoor content capture.
Buy them if you value a stable fit, hands-free POV video, open-ear audio, outdoor durability, and spoken access to selected Garmin data—and if you are comfortable with the $499 price, a phone-and-app dependency, and Meta’s privacy model.
Skip them if you want discreet daily eyewear, the lightest possible frame, all-day recording, a visual display, strong nighttime camera performance, or a complete replacement for a Garmin computer and action camera. Vanguard is not universally best. It is unusually well matched to athletes who want their glasses to do more without reaching for another screen.
