Kestra Medical Technologies announced an oversubscribed $196 million private financing round on July 24, 2024, aimed at expanding commercialization of its ASSURE cardiac-recovery platform. The centerpiece is the prescription-only ASSURE Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator (WCD), which had already received FDA approval in 2021.
The financing was a bet on commercial execution—not a product sale, IPO, grant, or government award—and did not disclose Kestra’s valuation, revenue, ownership structure, or detailed use-of-proceeds budget.
Who invested in Kestra’s $196 million round?
The financing was co-led by Andera Partners, Ally Bridge Group, Longitude Capital, and Omega Funds. Participating investors included funds and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price Investment Management, along with Eventide Asset Management and Gilmartin Capital.
Existing backers Bain Capital and Endeavour Vision also participated. Three investor representatives were expected to join Kestra’s board: Kevin Reilly of Ally Bridge Group, Maxwell Bikoff of Longitude Capital, and Francesco Draetta of Omega Funds.

Those board appointments show a governance consequence of the financing, but the available announcement did not disclose investor ownership percentages, board control, security type, debt-versus-equity terms, valuation, or per-share pricing.
GeekWire reported the financing and board appointments, while Medical Device Network detailed the commercialization objective and product platform.
What is the ASSURE system?
ASSURE is more than a wearable vest or an ordinary heart-rate monitor. Kestra describes it as a cardiac-recovery system comprising:

The WCD continuously assesses ECG data for potentially life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. Under its approved design, it can deliver a defibrillation shock without requiring intervention from the patient or a bystander. Kestra has also highlighted four ECG channels, noise-reduction algorithms, adaptive patient-intelligence capabilities, and detection and recording of other clinically significant arrhythmias.
Kestra said the system can alert an emergency medical services operator after a defibrillation shock. That capability should be treated as a company claim, rather than an independently established statement that ASSURE is the only WCD with EMS-alert functionality.
WCD therapy is not the same as wearable ECG monitoring
The ASSURE WCD and ASSURE Wearable ECG are separate products with different regulatory roles.
| Product | Primary function | Regulatory status |
|---|---|---|
| ASSURE Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator | Detects dangerous ventricular arrhythmias and can deliver defibrillation therapy | FDA-approved through the PMA pathway |
| ASSURE Wearable ECG | Records and reports heart-rate events for clinician review | FDA-cleared through the 510(k) pathway |
The FDA-cleared Wearable ECG does not deliver defibrillation therapy and its reports do not provide diagnostic interpretations. Its intended-use documentation describes use after a patient’s improvement following prescribed ASSURE WCD use. It should not be presented as a substitute for the defibrillator.
The distinction matters because “wearable ECG” can suggest a consumer smartwatch-style monitoring product, while the ASSURE WCD is a prescription medical device intended to provide potentially lifesaving therapy.
FDA status and approved indication
The FDA approved the ASSURE WCD system on July 27, 2021, under Premarket Approval application P200037. The approved indication is for adult patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest who are not candidates for, or refuse, an implantable defibrillator.
The device is prescription-only. The FDA approval documentation also identifies patients with an active implantable defibrillator as a contraindicated population. Accordingly, ASSURE is not a general-purpose consumer safety wearable and is not automatically an alternative to an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator for every patient.

The FDA’s summary of safety and effectiveness anticipated typical WCD use of approximately two to three months. That is an expectation in the regulatory document, not a universal prescription duration for every patient.
Kestra’s original PMA record is available through the FDA Premarket Approval database, with additional detail in the FDA approval letter and FDA safety and effectiveness summary.
The companion ASSURE Wearable ECG received 510(k) clearance on May 7, 2024, under application K233864. Its regulatory record and limitations are described by the FDA 510(k) database and clearance letter.
What changed after the 2024 financing?
FDA records available through August 16, 2026 show continued regulatory maintenance of the ASSURE platform. The FDA approved software version 5.1 on March 6, 2026, and approved a manufacturing-process update on April 14, 2026. The relevant software supplement and manufacturing supplement document those updates.
These supplements demonstrate ongoing product and manufacturing activity. They do not, by themselves, establish revenue growth, clinical superiority, market share, improved outcomes, or success of the 2024 commercialization campaign.

FDA approval removes one major barrier, but it does not guarantee adoption. Kestra’s financing was intended to help move ASSURE from regulatory authorization and early clinical use toward broader use across physicians, hospitals, and patients.
Physician and hospital adoption
Electrophysiologists, cardiologists, discharge teams, and hospital procurement departments must understand when a WCD fits into a patient’s care pathway. Providers also need workable processes for prescribing, fitting, training, monitoring, and transitioning patients to longer-term management.
Reimbursement and payer authorization
A claim of broad insurance coverage would not mean automatic payment for every patient. Reimbursement can depend on the payer, indication, clinical documentation, prior authorization, coding, network arrangements, and local service availability. Commercial success therefore depends on payer execution as much as on the device itself.
Patient adherence and usability
A WCD’s real-world value depends on correct and consistent use. Garment fit, skin tolerance, alarms, battery charging, bathing restrictions, anxiety, and the patient’s ability to respond to prompts can all affect effective wear time. Autonomous shock delivery can reduce dependence on patient or bystander action in appropriate circumstances, but “autonomous” does not mean infallible, maintenance-free, or immune to signal-quality problems.

Kestra must scale more than hardware production. It must support fitting, onboarding, replacement logistics, technical assistance, remote data operations, clinician communication, and quality systems. The later FDA manufacturing supplement underscores that regulated-device production and process control remain ongoing operational priorities.

What does “designed for female cardiac patients” mean?
Kestra and investors have said that ASSURE was designed to address underserved needs of female cardiac patients. That positioning could relate to garment sizing and fit, electrode placement, comfort, signal quality, clinical-trial representation, or adherence—but the financing coverage does not establish which design elements produce a clinically meaningful benefit.
To evaluate the claim, investors and providers would need specific evidence: comparative fit and comfort data, signal-quality performance, adherence by sex, representation in clinical studies, inappropriate-shock rates, and patient outcomes. Until that evidence is available, “designed for female patients” should be treated as a company product-positioning statement, not proof of a female-specific clinical advantage.
Market and competitive context
One investor statement described the existing WCD market as approximately $1 billion and “large and growing.” That figure is an investor estimate, not a fully documented market-size finding. The available coverage does not define its geography, year, methodology, addressable patient population, or whether it includes monitoring and support services.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsASSURE also enters a market with established WCD providers, including ZOLL’s LifeVest. A meaningful competitive comparison requires more than FDA status. Relevant criteria include:
- Clinical evidence and post-market outcomes
- Detection performance and inappropriate-shock rates
- Wear adherence and garment comfort
- Patient onboarding and technical support
- EMS and remote-monitoring integration
- Hospital workflow and clinician burden
- Payer coverage and authorization performance
- Geographic service availability
- Battery, replacement, and logistics policies
- Total episode-of-care cost
Kestra’s statement that ASSURE is the only WCD with a particular EMS-alert capability should be independently verified before being used as a definitive competitive conclusion. Likewise, descriptions such as “next generation” or “clinically proven” require attribution or specific supporting evidence.
What Kestra had achieved by July 2024
Kestra said ASSURE had been prescribed to more than 10,000 patients by the time of the financing. That is a company-reported prescription count, not an independently audited patient-volume disclosure.
The figure does indicate that ASSURE was beyond the purely experimental stage. But it does not reveal active-patient numbers, completed treatment episodes, revenue, repeat utilization, adherence, clinical outcomes, or market share. The financing announcement also did not disclose a sales forecast, hiring target, cash runway, profitability, or geographic expansion timetable.

What would show that the financing worked?
Future evaluation should focus on measurable commercialization outcomes rather than the size of the funding round alone:
- Prescriptions and active patients: whether utilization grows beyond the company’s reported 10,000-patient base.
- Revenue and service economics: including recurring monitoring and support revenue where applicable.
- Payer execution: authorization rates, coverage breadth, denials, and time to approval.
- Wear adherence: actual usable wear time and reasons for discontinuation.
- Safety and performance: inappropriate shocks, clinically relevant detections, and adverse events.
- Clinical outcomes: evidence from post-market data and the clinical-trial record, including NCT03887052.
- Provider adoption: hospital-system contracts, electrophysiology-program use, and workflow integration.
- Operations: manufacturing capacity, supply reliability, fitting coverage, and support performance.
- Regulatory progress: meaningful product improvements, not merely the existence of routine supplements.
The investment takeaway
The $196 million round materially strengthened Kestra’s ability to pursue commercialization of an already FDA-approved WCD platform. It brought in multiple specialist healthcare investors, added three expected board representatives, and provided capital for sales, clinical, service, and operational expansion.
But the transaction did not prove that ASSURE had displaced incumbent technology or achieved commercial success. Its significance depends on whether Kestra can convert regulatory approval into reimbursed prescriptions, reliable patient use, efficient provider workflows, and differentiated clinical and economic outcomes.
