Yes—but AirPods are not GPS trackers. Apple’s Find My service may show a nearby location, a location anonymously relayed by another Apple device, or only the last place the AirPods were connected. What you can find depends on the AirPods model, whether Find My was enabled before they went missing, battery level, connectivity, and whether you lost an earbud, the case, or both.
The short answer
AirPods can appear in Find My, but “tracked” can mean three different things:
- Last known location: the last place they were connected to or detected by your devices.
- Find My network location: a nearby Apple device may anonymously relay an approximate location.
- Nearby finding: when the AirPods are close and reachable, Find My may help you narrow the search and play a sound.
This is proximity detection and network-assisted locating—not continuous GPS tracking like a phone or an AirTag. A map pin can be delayed, approximate, or based on an earlier detection.

How AirPods appear in Find My
Last known location
If Find My cannot currently communicate with the AirPods, it may retain the last location where they were connected or detected. That location is useful for retracing your steps, but it does not prove that the AirPods are still there.
The Find My network
Supported AirPods can be detected by nearby Apple devices. Those devices can anonymously and securely relay an approximate location to your Apple Account through the Find My network. This does not mean the AirPods are broadcasting a live GPS position; updates depend on a compatible Apple device passing nearby and detecting them.

Nearby finding
When the AirPods are close enough to connect or be detected, Find My may show Find Nearby or Find. Supported model-and-device combinations can provide directional or approximate-distance guidance. Do not assume that every AirPods generation supports the same nearby-finding experience.
Which AirPods support the strongest features?
Apple’s feature support changes by model and software version. Its current documentation identifies Find My network support for selected models, including:
- AirPods 3
- AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation
- AirPods Pro
- AirPods Pro 2
- AirPods Pro 3
- AirPods Max
The important distinction is not simply whether your AirPods appear in Find My. Features such as separate earbud locations, independent case location, case sounds, Lost Mode, and nearby finding may require a particular model and compatible Apple device.

Before troubleshooting, identify the exact generation in Settings > Bluetooth on a paired iPhone or iPad, then compare it with Apple’s AirPods Find My guide.
How to find lost AirPods on an iPhone or iPad
- Open the Find My app.
- Tap Devices.
- Select your AirPods.
- Check the map and the status shown on the device card.
- If they are nearby and reachable, tap Play Sound.
- If offered, tap Find Nearby or Find and follow the onscreen directions.
- If the map shows another location, tap Get Directions to open it in Maps.
- If you cannot recover them, swipe up on the AirPods card and use Lost Mode or Show Contact Info, where supported.
The controls you see depend on the model, software, battery, connection, and whether the earbuds are inside the case. Apple’s step-by-step instructions are available at Find your lost AirPods with Find My.
Can you find AirPods without an iPhone?
Yes. You can use Find My on an iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch. Apple also supports iCloud.com/find. The web version may not provide every feature available in the Find My app, particularly nearby-finding controls and some case-related actions.
Android does not provide the same account-linked Find My experience. A Bluetooth-scanner app may detect a nearby signal in limited circumstances, but it is not an equivalent replacement for Apple’s Find My network and cannot promise recovery.
Can you track one lost AirPod?
Often, but the process varies by model. With many AirPods, Find My displays one separated earbud at a time:

- Follow the map or sound to the AirPod that Find My shows.
- Put the recovered AirPod in its charging case.
- Refresh Find My.
- Use the newly displayed location to search for the other earbud.
On AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3, Apple says Find My can show the locations of each earbud and the charging case separately. If your model does not support separate locations, the app may show only one component or the pair’s last known location.

Can you track the charging case?
Not every AirPods case can be tracked independently. Newer supported cases have much stronger Find My functionality. Apple’s current documentation identifies separate case-location features for AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3. Some of these cases also contain a speaker that can play a sound.
Older cases may show only the last known location of the connected earbuds, and some do not appear as independent devices at all. If you lost only the case, identify its exact AirPods generation before relying on Find My.
Can AirPods play a sound?
Yes, if the relevant component is reachable. In Find My, select the AirPods and tap Play Sound. The sound continues for several minutes or until you stop it, according to Apple.

There are important limits:
- Earbuds generally need to be out of the case for their sound to help.
- Only selected newer cases can play their own sound.
- A closed case without the relevant hardware may prevent the earbuds from being heard.
- Dead or offline AirPods cannot respond immediately.
- If Find My shows Offline or No location found, Play Sound and nearby finding may be unavailable.
If Find My displays Connecting, the AirPods may be out of range, inside a closed case, out of battery, offline, or incompletely configured for Find My. Check the last known location and search physically rather than repeatedly tapping the button.
What “Offline” or “No location found” means
These messages mean Find My cannot currently communicate with the AirPods. Common explanations include:
- The battery in the earbuds or case is depleted.
- The AirPods are outside communication range.
- The model or settings do not support the Find My network.
- Find My was not enabled before the loss.
- The app has only an older last known location.
You may still be able to get directions to the last known location. If the AirPods come back online, Find My may update their location or notify you, but there is no guarantee that they will be detected again.

Can dead AirPods be found?
Not live. Once the relevant hardware has no usable power, it cannot send a new signal. Find My may continue to display a location recorded before the battery died, but a dead battery prevents new active detection until the AirPods can communicate again.
What must be set up before the loss?
The AirPods should have been paired with an iPhone or iPad signed in to your Apple Account, with Find My enabled on a paired device before they disappeared. Keeping the paired device’s operating system current improves compatibility.
Turning on Find My after the AirPods are lost generally cannot reconstruct a location history that was never collected. If the AirPods were never added to Find My, there may be no dependable Apple-supported way to locate them afterward.
What if the AirPods were stolen?
They may remain locatable if they are still associated with your account and are detected by your device or the Find My network. However, a map pin may be stale, approximate, or represent a detection by another Apple device. It is not proof of a current address or of who has the AirPods.
On supported models, use Lost Mode or Show Contact Info. These features can help a finder contact you, but they are not a guaranteed anti-theft lock. Find My does not promise that Apple can recover the AirPods, remotely disable them, or identify another person.

Do not confront someone at a private address based only on a map location. Report the theft to the relevant venue, school, employer, carrier, or police department. Practical recovery checklist
If they are probably at home
- Try Play Sound first.
- Search cushions, bedding, pockets, bags, car seats, and charging areas.
- Use nearby finding if your model supports it.
- If you find one earbud, place it in the case and refresh Find My to locate the other.
If the map shows a distant location
Treat it as evidence of a detection, not proof that the AirPods are still there. It may be a last-known connection, a delayed network update, an isolated earbud, or an inaccurate position. Do not attempt a private confrontation.
If only the case is missing
Check whether the case is listed separately in Find My. Newer supported cases may show their own location and play a sound; older cases may not. If the earbuds remain available, a replacement case may be possible through Apple, but compatibility and service eligibility should be checked on Apple’s live support pages.
How to reduce the chance of losing them again
- Keep the Find My network enabled for supported AirPods.
- Turn on separation alerts where available so your iPhone can warn you when you leave the AirPods behind.
- Keep your iPhone, iPad, and AirPods software current.
- Use a case with Find My support and a built-in speaker if independent case finding matters to you.
- For an older case or travel pouch, consider attaching an AirTag or another compatible Find My accessory. That tracks the container, not the earbuds themselves, and adds bulk.
Find My is presented by Apple as a built-in feature rather than a separate monthly tracking subscription. For current AirPods, case, or service availability, use Apple’s AirPods buying page and support pages; prices and regional options can change.

Can AirPods be tracked in their case?
Only some cases support independent Find My location and case sounds. Newer supported cases, including those for AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3, have stronger case-finding features; older cases may not.
Can an AirTag track AirPods?
An AirTag can track the case, bag, or pouch it is attached to, but it does not track the earbuds themselves or make them play a sound.
