Yes, a Fitbit can work with a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone. In 2026, setup is handled through Google Health, Google’s successor to the Fitbit app—not through Samsung’s Bluetooth settings. Install or update Google Health, sign in with the correct Google Account, enable Bluetooth and Location, then add the Fitbit from Connections → Add device.

The most common Samsung-specific problem comes after pairing: One UI battery controls can put Google Health to sleep, delaying synchronization and notifications. Correcting background usage, notification, and permission settings is often as important as the initial pairing.

Before you begin

Compatibility depends on the Fitbit model, Android version, Google Health app, Google Play services, and the phone’s Bluetooth support—not simply on whether the phone has a Samsung logo. Most recent Galaxy S, A, and Note phones should work when they run a supported Android version, but very old models may not.

  • Power Saving Mode disabled during initial pairing

Put the Fitbit on its charger and keep it within a few feet of the phone. Google specifically recommends charging the device during setup.

Which app should you install in 2026?

Install Google Health from Google Play. Existing Fitbit app installations may transition through an update, and older search results may still call the app “Fitbit.” Use Google’s current Google Health documentation and the Google Play listing rather than installing multiple apps from old setup guides.

A Google Account is required for current setup. Choose carefully: historical Fitbit data, device associations, and any subscription may be connected to a different Google Account than the one you normally use on your Samsung phone. As of August 18, 2026, use a Google Account for Fitbit setup. Google support pages have displayed different historical migration dates, so legacy-account users should follow the current in-app migration prompt or contact Google Health/Fitbit support rather than relying on an old deadline.

The correct way to set up Fitbit on a Samsung phone

1. Update the phone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Software update.
  3. Tap Download and install.
  4. Install available updates and restart if prompted.

Samsung menu names can vary by One UI version or carrier. Also update Google Play components, Google Play Store, and Google Health. Fitbit firmware updates normally become available after the device is connected.

2. Turn on Bluetooth and Location

  1. Open Settings → Connections → Bluetooth and switch Bluetooth on.
  2. Return to Settings and open Location.
  3. Switch Location on.

Android may require Location for Bluetooth discovery and Fast Pair. This does not mean Fitbit is continuously using your location for every feature.

Do not pair the Fitbit by tapping it in Samsung’s Bluetooth list. Bluetooth must be enabled, but setup should begin inside Google Health.

3. Install Google Health and choose the right account

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Google Health.
  3. Install or update it, then open the app.
  4. Tap Sign in with Google.
  5. Select the Google Account that should own the Fitbit data.
  6. Complete the Google Health profile if requested.

The profile may ask for height, weight, and sex to estimate stride length, basal metabolic rate, distance, or calories. These are estimates, not medical measurements.

4. Add the Fitbit from Google Health

  1. Open Google Health.
  2. Tap Connections near the top-left.
  3. Tap Add device.
  4. Select your Fitbit model.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions with the Fitbit close to the phone.
  6. Approve requested Bluetooth, nearby-device, Location, notification, and other permissions.
  7. Allow pairing and firmware updates to finish without moving the devices far apart.

Some models show a setup notification automatically. If it does not appear, use Connections → Add device. A successful setup should show the Fitbit among connected devices, along with information such as battery level or last sync time.

5. Finish model-specific setup

Depending on the model, Google Health may ask about wrist orientation, clock faces, exercise shortcuts, sleep settings, notifications, Google Maps, Google Wallet, YouTube Music controls, Wi-Fi, or emergency features. Availability varies by model, country, language, phone, and account.

Samsung settings that prevent syncing

Allow Google Health to run in the background

Samsung’s battery management can suspend Google Health when it has not been opened recently. The exact labels vary by One UI version, but inspect these areas:

  • Settings → Apps → Google Health → Battery: choose Unrestricted, or the least restrictive option available.
  • Settings → Battery and device care → Battery → Background usage limits: remove Google Health from Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps.

These restrictions can delay syncs, interrupt Bluetooth communication, and prevent phone notifications from reaching the Fitbit.

Allow notifications

  1. Open Settings → Notifications → App notifications.
  2. Select Google Health and allow notifications.
  3. In Google Health’s device settings, enable the notification types you want.
  4. Approve notification access or other permissions when prompted.

The Fitbit generally needs to remain near the phone for call, text, and smartphone-app notifications. Also check Samsung’s Do Not Disturb, Sleep mode, and Modes and Routines, plus notification permission for the source app such as Messages or WhatsApp.

Review nearby-device and Location permissions

Bluetooth-related permissions help Google Health discover and communicate with the Fitbit. If a permission was denied, open Settings → Apps → Google Health → Permissions, re-enable the relevant permission, force-close Google Health, reopen it, and retry setup.

Fix a Fitbit that will not pair

Work through this order rather than repeatedly tapping the device in Samsung Bluetooth settings:

If the Fitbit appears in Samsung Bluetooth but setup fails

A Bluetooth entry is not the same as a Google Health account connection. Remove the incomplete connection:

  1. Open Settings → Connections → Bluetooth.
  2. Tap the gear or information icon beside the Fitbit.
  3. Choose Forget or Unpair.
  4. Restart Bluetooth and return to Google Health.
  5. Add the device from inside Google Health.

If it says the Fitbit is linked to another account

This usually means the device belonged to someone else, the wrong Google Account was selected, or an old device association remains. Verify the signed-in account and remove obsolete Fitbit devices from Google Health. For a used Fitbit, ask the previous owner to remove it from their account.

Do not assume a factory reset removes server-side ownership. Google also indicates that, with limited exceptions, only one Fitbit device or Pixel Watch can be connected to an account at a time. Remove the old association before trying again.

Fix syncing and Bluetooth disconnections

If setup completed but data is missing or delayed:

  • Open Google Health and use its sync control or pull down to refresh, if available.
  • Confirm the Fitbit remains connected over Bluetooth and the phone has internet access.
  • Remove Google Health from Samsung sleeping and deep-sleeping lists.
  • Set its battery access to unrestricted or the least restrictive available option.
  • Update Samsung software, Google Health, and Fitbit firmware.
  • Restart both devices.
  • Remove old Fitbit devices from the account.
  • If necessary, forget the Bluetooth entry and reconnect through Google Health.

See Google’s sync troubleshooting guidance for current app-specific steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix Fitbit notifications on Samsung

Check every layer of the notification path:

  • Google Health notifications are allowed in Samsung Settings.
  • The desired notification categories are enabled in the Fitbit’s Google Health device settings.
  • The source app is allowed to notify.
  • Do Not Disturb, Sleep mode, and Samsung Modes are not suppressing the alert.
  • The Fitbit is within Bluetooth range.
  • Google Health is not battery-restricted.
  • Notification access was not revoked after a One UI or Android update.

Phone alerts are relayed through the phone. A Fitbit is not an independent cellular replacement unless the exact model and service support that function.

Fix Wi-Fi problems on Fitbit watches

Wi-Fi setup is separate from Bluetooth pairing. Confirm the network name and password, keep the Fitbit near the router, and retry Wi-Fi setup through Google Health. Restart the router and Fitbit if necessary. Hotspots can introduce model-specific limits, slower syncing, failed updates, data use, or extra battery drain; do not assume every Fitbit watch supports hotspot setup in the same way.

Setting up a used Fitbit or replacing an old one

Account ownership is more important than the physical reset. Before buying or accepting a used device, confirm that the previous owner removed it from their Google Health/Fitbit account. If setup reports that it belongs to another account, contact that owner first.

When replacing your own Fitbit, verify that you are signed in to the Google Account containing your history, remove the old device if needed, and allow the final sync before resetting or giving it away. Data that has not synchronized may be lost.

Google Health, Fitbit data, and Samsung Health

These are separate layers:

  • Google Health login: the account used for current setup.
  • Fitbit device: the tracker or watch being paired.
  • Historical Fitbit data: information associated with the relevant Fitbit/Google Account.
  • Google Health Premium: an optional subscription for certain coaching, workouts, readiness features, and premium content.
  • Samsung Health: Samsung’s separate health platform.

A Samsung phone can run Google Health and Samsung Health together, but Fitbit data does not automatically appear in Samsung Health in every configuration. Health Connect, third-party integrations, region, app version, and supported data types may affect what transfers. Some data may move one way, fail to transfer, or be duplicated. Choose one app as your primary source for steps, workouts, sleep, and weight if conflicting totals would be a problem.

Do you need Google Health Premium?

No subscription should be assumed necessary for basic device setup and core tracking. Premium may add personalized coaching, workouts, readiness features, and other health content. Trials and offers vary by device, country, account, and promotion; they are not permanent guarantees. Check the price and renewal terms shown at checkout on the official Google Health Premium page.

Fitbit or Samsung Galaxy Watch?

Choose based on the ecosystem you actually want:

Choose Fitbit when you prioritize Choose Galaxy Watch when you prioritize
Sleep and recovery tracking Deep Samsung Health integration
Simpler fitness tracking A fuller smartwatch experience
A lighter tracker-style device Wear OS apps and extensive customization
Fitbit coaching and readiness features Calls, messages, and richer controls from the wrist
Potentially longer battery life on many tracker models A single Samsung-centered ecosystem
Using the wearable with Android or iPhone later Closer integration with Samsung phone features

Battery estimates are manufacturer claims and depend on GPS, always-on display, notifications, and other settings. For current Galaxy Watch compatibility and ecosystem limitations, consult Samsung’s support documentation.

Fitbit may be a poor fit if your phone cannot run the required Android version, you want a full Wear OS smartwatch, need cellular operation away from the phone, expect every Fitbit metric in Samsung Health, or do not want a Google Account or optional subscription features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Last-resort recovery

Before uninstalling Google Health, confirm Android compatibility, record the Fitbit model and error message, and make sure you know the correct Google Account credentials. Google warns that an unsupported phone may not be able to reinstall the app after removal.

  1. Forget the Fitbit in Samsung Bluetooth settings.
  2. Restart the phone and Fitbit.
  3. Confirm the phone still meets the model’s Android requirement.
  4. Reinstall Google Health only after checking compatibility.
  5. Sign in with the correct Google Account.
  6. Reconnect using Connections → Add device.
  7. Contact Google Health/Fitbit support if pairing still fails.
