Material 3 Expressive is no longer just “coming” to Wear OS: it is the design foundation of Wear OS 6. Google identifies the Pixel Watch 4 as the first smartwatch built to showcase the full experience. The redesign brings watch-face-inspired color, controls shaped for a round screen, more expressive scrolling and redesigned tiles—but it does not mean every existing Wear OS watch gets the full operating-system update.
What Material 3 Expressive changes
Material 3 Expressive is a design system, not a standalone app or theme to download. It builds on Material You’s personalization and adds stronger visual hierarchy, motion and shape. On a watch, that means adapting the interface to a circular display rather than shrinking a phone layout onto the wrist. Google announced Wear OS 6, based on Android 16, in May 2025; its later developer coverage named Pixel Watch 4 as the first smartwatch designed to showcase the full Material 3 Expressive experience. A first look at the round-screen changes
Color that can follow the watch face
Dynamic color can draw on the Pixel watch-face palette to theme compatible system surfaces, apps and tiles. The result can make the watch feel more coordinated without requiring a separate color choice for every screen. It is not automatic for every third-party app: developers need to adopt the relevant components and support the color behavior. Google’s developer announcement describes the watch-face color connection.
Controls that use the edge of the circle
Wear OS 6’s design guidance includes an edge-hugging button shape. On a round display, a control can curve toward the lower edge instead of ending in a rectangular block with unused space around it. The practical aim is a larger, easier-to-hit target that fits the watch’s geometry. Google documents this and other round-aware components in its Wear OS 6 feature guide.

Scrolling and motion with a purpose
Lists can move with the curvature of the screen, with clearer scroll indicators and fluid transitions. Spring motion and shape changes can make an action or state change easier to notice—for example, confirming that a control responded. The point is not animation for its own sake: on a watch, motion should remain brief and useful, not distract from a quick glance or burden performance and battery life. Google’s Wear OS design guidance urges developers to consider those constraints.
Tiles with more room for glanceable information
The new tile guidance includes a multi-slot layout with up to three columns. That can put more useful information in a glance, but more columns are not automatically better: readability depends on the content and how an app implements its tile. Tiles are updated separately from the operating system, so an older-looking tile can remain even when other parts of the watch change.
What it may feel like in everyday use
The redesign reaches the quick interactions that make up much of smartwatch use: checking notifications, moving between tiles, adjusting quick settings, entering a PIN, scrolling the app list, starting a workout, and controlling music or podcasts. Google has highlighted refreshed pin-pad and media-control experiences alongside expressive scrolling, responsive feedback and more engaging tiles. Those are platform design aims, not a promise that every surface looks or behaves identically on every watch.

Always-on behavior is part of the wider Wear OS 6 update too. Google says the platform provides a more consistent always-on experience that can remember and show the previous top activity. What appears in ambient mode still depends on the watch, its software and the app or watch face in use. For an overview of the platform changes, see Google’s Wear OS 6 documentation.
Wear OS 6 is more than a visual refresh
Wear OS 6 also supports Watch Face Format 4 on devices running Wear OS 6 or higher. Its additions include photo selection and curated photo collections, animated transitions between interactive and ambient modes, and Watch Face Push, an API for watch-face marketplaces. These capabilities are distinct from Material 3 Expressive; a device or face needs the appropriate support to use them.
Some features associated with newer Wear OS watches did not begin with Wear OS 6. Enhanced media actions such as rewind, fast-forward and playlist controls started with Wear OS 5.1, as did Credential Manager and passkey-related support on Pixel Watch devices. They are useful context for the platform, but should not be mistaken for Wear OS 6 exclusives. Google’s feature documentation identifies the version requirements.

Is Material 3 Expressive exclusive to Pixel Watch 4?
No. Pixel Watch 4 is Google’s first full showcase device, not the only possible home for the design system. Google’s developer documentation says Material 3 Expressive is supported through current Wear Compose and ProtoLayout libraries for app development on Wear OS 3 and higher. That describes what developers can build for; it does not establish that every Wear OS 3-or-newer watch is eligible for the Wear OS 6 system update.

- Pixel Watch 4: Google’s reference for the full Wear OS 6 and Material 3 Expressive presentation.
- Other Wear OS 6 watches: May offer the redesigned platform, subject to the manufacturer’s rollout and software implementation.
- Older watches: May get updated Google apps, tiles or other components without receiving the complete operating-system update.
- Third-party apps and tiles: Can retain their previous appearance until their developers adopt the relevant libraries and design patterns.
Do not treat a redesigned Google app as proof that the watch itself received Wear OS 6. Availability can also vary by model and rollout timing. Check the watch maker’s current update information for the exact device; developer-library compatibility is not a consumer upgrade list.

Google said watches updating from Wear OS 5 to Wear OS 6 can see up to 10% improved battery life, while noting that actual performance varies. This is a platform claim, not a guaranteed 10% gain for every watch or wearer. Display settings, LTE, GPS, workouts, notifications, the chosen watch face and app activity all affect real-world endurance. A user could see little improvement—or worse battery life—despite the claim. Google’s announcement states the qualification.

Should you buy a Pixel Watch 4 for the redesign?
Consider Pixel Watch 4 if you want the newest Pixel Watch hardware and the clearest reference for Google’s full Wear OS 6 presentation. But the design language alone is not a reason to assume you must replace an older watch: some of its elements can arrive through apps or tiles, and other Wear OS 6 devices may offer the platform experience.
Before buying, check whether your current watch is receiving the full system update or only individual app changes, and whether the apps and tiles you rely on have been updated. If you mainly use one watch face, notifications and fitness tracking, the visual overhaul may matter less than battery life, health features, durability, phone compatibility and the manufacturer’s update support. Google’s Pixel Watch 4 product page is the place to confirm current model details; availability and specifications can change.

For developers: the migration is more than a color update
Developers can start with Wear Compose Material 3 for apps and Wear ProtoLayout for tiles. Google’s guidance highlights components and patterns such as EdgeButton, TransformingLazyColumn and PrimaryLayout, alongside dynamic color, variable fonts, shape-morphing and spring animations, and three-slot tiles. Exact library versions change, so consult the current documentation rather than relying on a fixed dependency snippet.
A practical migration checklist:
- Review Wear OS 6 behavior changes and compatibility requirements.
- Update Compose for Wear OS and ProtoLayout dependencies as appropriate.
- Audit screens for circular-display behavior; replace rectangular assumptions with round-aware layouts and controls.
- Test dynamic color and typography across different watch faces.
- Use animation to communicate state, and check its frequency and battery impact.
- Test both ambient and interactive states on an emulator and physical watches.
- Update tiles separately from the full app.
- Treat Watch Face Format 4 as a separate migration from Material 3 Expressive.
The key distinction holds for users and developers alike: a design system can be available in libraries without making a particular watch eligible for a full operating-system update.
