ili was a neck-worn speech translator announced by Logbar at CES 2016. The pitch was simple: press a button, speak a short phrase, and hear it spoken in another language—without Wi-Fi. Contemporary coverage reported English, Chinese and Japanese support at the unveiling, but did not establish that ili was the world’s first wearable translator, that every announced feature reached buyers, or that the device remains available today.
What was ili?
Logbar designed ili as a dedicated travel translator worn around the neck, rather than as a phone app, handheld device or earbud. Logbar was also associated with the Ring ZERO wearable project. The translator’s intended use was short spoken exchanges: a traveler could ask a question or say a phrase without first opening a general-purpose device.
The original CES-era account described ili as a compact appliance with speech input and spoken output. That made its appeal different from a text translation app: the user could speak, then let the device play a translated phrase aloud.
How was ili supposed to work?
- Press the device’s button to start listening.
- Speak the phrase to be translated.
- Allow ili to process the speech.
- Listen as the device speaks the translated phrase.
Contemporary coverage described a built-in translation engine, a speech-synthesis chipset and a travel-oriented lexicon. In practice, the button-driven sequence sounds like phrase-by-phrase translation—not continuous, simultaneous interpretation. The available account does not verify whether users could switch translation direction automatically or had to change language modes manually.

Which languages did it support?
At the CES 2016 unveiling, contemporary coverage reported English, Chinese and Japanese. Logbar reportedly planned to add more languages, but a stated plan is not proof that a language pack shipped or worked on retail devices.

What did “real-time” mean?
For ili, “real-time” is best understood as an aspiration to translate a spoken phrase quickly enough for a live exchange. The reported push-to-talk process still required a speaker to pause, let the device process the phrase and wait for synthesized speech. That is a different experience from an interpreter translating continuously or two people hearing translations directly in their ears.
The available description does not establish continuous translation, automatic speaker detection, group-conversation handling, or translation for calls, meetings, text or images. Those capabilities should not be inferred from the word “real-time.”
Did ili work without internet?
Contemporary coverage said ili did not need Wi-Fi or an internet connection because its translation and speech-synthesis components were built into the device. That was an announced product capability, not an independently documented test result. If it worked as described, offline processing would have been useful where connectivity was weak or costly. The trade-off for an offline travel lexicon could be narrower coverage than a cloud-connected service, especially for open-ended speech.
No reliable current documentation establishes ili’s precise offline vocabulary, language-pack update process, accuracy, battery life or requirements for a companion phone. Nor does local processing alone prove that a device collected no data: no current privacy policy or data-retention details were verified.

Was ili really the world’s first wearable translator?
Logbar presented ili as “the first real-time wearable translator in the world,” and the headline language was repeated in contemporary coverage. The available evidence supports calling it an early and notable consumer wearable translation project; it does not establish an absolute worldwide first.

Those are different historical claims. Without evidence defining the category and accounting for earlier systems, the superlative is best treated as promotional wording rather than a verified fact.
Can you buy or use ili today?
As of August 18, 2026, current official sales, software support and operational availability could not be verified. The source documenting ili was published in the CES-era news cycle and updated on June 21, 2017; it is not a current product-status notice. That leaves its long-term commercial availability unclear: it would be inaccurate to declare from this evidence alone that ili definitely shipped widely, remains supported or was discontinued.
If you encounter a used unit, treat it as an unsupported legacy gadget unless the seller demonstrates that the specific device charges, translates in the needed languages and works without unavailable software or services. Before paying, verify:
- That the device powers on and holds a charge.
- That the required language pair is available on that unit.
- That translation works in a live demonstration, not just in an old video or listing.
- Whether it needs a companion app, account, update or service that can no longer be accessed.
- What return terms, if any, apply.
What should travelers consider instead?
For occasional phrases, a translation app on a modern phone may be sufficient. Dedicated devices make more sense when their specific advantages—such as hands-free conversation, a separate handheld interface or verified offline language support—solve a real travel problem. Product claims and prices change, so check current language lists, connectivity requirements, support terms and pricing with the maker before buying.

Two makers with active product sites include Timekettle, which offers translation earbuds and handheld devices, and Vasco Translator, whose range includes handheld translators and phone-connected earbuds. Their feature and availability descriptions are vendor claims; confirm the exact model’s workflow and offline language support rather than assuming all devices in a category behave alike.

As price snapshots rather than current quotes, a Timekettle company announcement listed U.S. reference prices in January 2026 of $349 for W4, $449 for W4 Pro, $299.99 for T1, $349.99 for WT2 Edge, $149.99 for M3 and $699.99 for X1. Vasco’s CES 2025 release listed $389 for E1 earbuds and $589 for an E1/V4 bundle at that time. What are the practical limits of a phrase translator?
Speech and translation quality
Travel phrases are more predictable than unrestricted conversation. Accents, dialects, idioms, names, slang, fast speech and background noise can make recognition or translation harder for consumer systems. No independent test results establish how well ili handled these conditions, so these are category-level cautions, not measured ili failures.
Do not rely on a consumer translator as the sole channel for medication instructions, emergencies, contracts, legal or immigration matters, financial transactions, police encounters or safety-critical directions. Use a qualified interpreter or professional service when misunderstanding could cause harm.

Turn-taking and sound
A press-and-wait exchange can interrupt natural conversation: each person has to pause for the device to listen, process and speak. Traffic, wind, crowds, multiple speakers and quiet voices can also challenge wearable microphones and speakers. These are practical risks for the form factor, not documented ili test findings.
Unverified ownership details
No reliable current source establishes ili’s battery life, charging method, firmware or language-pack updates, repairability, warranty, regional restrictions or smartphone requirements. Those unknowns matter more than the novelty of the form factor if you are considering a second-hand unit.
Why ili still matters
ili captured a durable idea: make translation a small, dedicated tool that can travel with a person and work without relying on a phone or network. Its CES announcement is evidence of that ambition, not evidence of a lasting, currently supported product. The strongest historical conclusion is that Logbar presented an early wearable translation concept with a clear push-to-talk workflow; the “world’s first” claim and its present-day usability remain unverified.
