Mentra Live is a camera-and-audio pair of smart glasses built around MentraOS and a MiniApp Store—not a set of display glasses. Its pitch is that developers and users can add capabilities after purchase, rather than being limited to a fixed feature set. That makes it an intriguing platform for software builders and custom deployments, but “open source” does not mean every service runs locally, and the usual MiniApp architecture depends on a phone and cloud relay.
What Mentra Live is—and what it is not
Mentra Live combines a camera, speakers, three microphones, physical controls, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It has no built-in display or heads-up display. The glasses are intended for camera capture and audio interactions, with the Mentra phone app serving as the control center for pairing and app management. Mentra lists photo and video capture, calls, music, AI features and livestreaming among the platform’s uses. The package includes a charging case and Infinity Cable, according to the product page.
That distinction matters when comparing it with display-first products such as Even Realities G1 or Vuzix Z100. Mentra says its software platform supports devices including those products, but shared software does not give Mentra Live a HUD. On Live, information must be conveyed through audio or the phone rather than text floating in the wearer’s field of view.
What “open source” means here
Mentra describes MentraOS as open source, and its public GitHub repository says its components are released under the MIT license. The platform also offers an SDK and developer documentation. Those are meaningful forms of access: developers can inspect and build on the software platform instead of treating the glasses as a sealed feature set.

But open software is not the same as open hardware, open app distribution, local processing or freedom from a vendor’s services. The repository does not establish that the industrial design, camera module, firmware, manufacturing files, authentication, hosted APIs or every cloud component are open or independently operable. A careful summary is: Mentra is open at the software-platform layer, not necessarily across every hardware and service layer.
How the MiniApp Store works
The MiniApp Store is Mentra’s attempt to make the glasses extensible. A user browses the catalog on a phone or computer, chooses an app and taps Install; the app then appears in the Apps list in the MentraOS phone app. The phone remains part of the experience even though the app is presented as a glasses feature.
Mentra’s listings illustrate the range it wants the platform to support: Merge for proactive AI, Live Captions, Notes, livestreaming, language learning, flash cards, teleprompter, translation, calendar reminders and Dash for running or cycling statistics. These examples show ambition, not uniform maturity or compatibility. A teleprompter or captioning app may make most sense on display-equipped glasses; a camera app needs camera hardware. Check each listing for supported device, permissions, pricing and whether it relies on a remote service. A catalog entry alone does not guarantee that every app works equally well on Mentra Live.

That is a catalog/interface detail, not proof that the platform has no third-party apps: the same store lists apps, and Mentra’s documentation describes public and deployed applications. The more important buyer question is whether the particular app they want is available and maintained.

The phone, relay and cloud are part of the architecture
For a typical third-party MiniApp, Mentra’s documentation describes a cloud-connected system. In simplified form, the path is:
Glasses ↔ phone ↔ Mentra Relay Server ↔ developer’s app server
The relay links the glasses and app service, while events such as voice, camera and button input move through the system. This can make it easier for developers to build apps without writing a completely independent glasses-and-phone stack, but it introduces dependencies on connectivity, the relay and the app’s own server. Network conditions and service availability can therefore matter to responsiveness and whether an app works at all.

That is not the same thing as installing an ordinary Store MiniApp; it means taking on more of the integration work. Mentra’s architecture overview and local-development guide explain the distinction. The documentation also discusses running a relay of your own, but the available material does not establish how complete or consumer-friendly self-hosting is.

What developers can build
Mentra’s developer platform is TypeScript-oriented and uses the @mentra/sdk package. The documented capabilities include camera, microphone and audio; display features on compatible glasses; sensors; voice transcription; AI integration; notifications; calendar; location; and livestreaming. Device differences still shape the app: display layouts need a display, while camera workflows need camera hardware. Cross-platform support means a shared development target, not identical features on every pair of glasses.
For a basic MiniApp, the current quickstart calls for a phone running the Mentra app, basic TypeScript knowledge, Node.js 18 or later, Bun, a Developer Console account and an ngrok tunnel or equivalent publicly reachable endpoint for local development. Developers register an app with a unique package name, provide its URL and declare permissions. The documented commands include:
bun install
bun run dev
ngrok http --url=<YOUR_NGROK_URL_HERE> 3000The tunnel is for the documented local-development flow, so the relay can reach a developer’s machine; it should not be confused with a production hosting requirement to use ngrok. Production apps need an endpoint reachable by the relevant services, but Mentra does not mandate a particular cloud vendor.

Lower-level work on the glasses is a different undertaking. Mentra’s device guide identifies Live as model K900 and describes a custom Android build, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, 1080p photo/video capability, an integrated microcontroller, and Wi-Fi-only ADB (no USB ADB). Its development path involves Android Studio, Java SDK 17, ADB and a shared Wi-Fi network. The guide includes commands such as ./gradlew assembleDebug, adb install -r app/build/outputs/apk/debug/app-debug.apk and adb logcat. That is engineering access, not a consumer setup shortcut.

Camera quality depends on the transfer path
The documented photo resolution varies with requested size and connectivity. The figures below are resolution ceilings in the camera documentation, not a promise of equal image quality in every condition:

Mentra’s photo-capture documentation says Bluetooth transfers use aggressive compression, with AVIF and JPEG fallback described. In practice, a nominally high-resolution camera does not mean full-resolution files will always reach the phone at that quality: the connection path matters.

Documented MiniApp permission categories include microphone, camera, location and background location, calendar, reading notifications and posting notifications. Developers declare permissions in the Developer Console; users approve them during installation. Mentra says its cloud blocks access to features for which the required permission has not been granted. The permissions guide describes the model.

Mentra’s product page says MentraOS stores a user’s email address and installed-app information, and says users can view and delete their data in the Mentra app. That is not a blanket assurance that camera or microphone data never reaches a server. The standard app architecture supports cloud relay and cloud-hosted applications, so data handling depends on the app, its permissions, its server deployment and its retention practices. Read an app’s disclosures and permissions before installing it; open-source platform code alone does not settle those questions.

There is also an ordinary social privacy issue: a camera mounted on glasses can be less obvious to people nearby than a phone camera. Check local rules and respect consent, especially in workplaces, schools, private venues and conversations where recording would be unwelcome.
Practical limits and troubleshooting
- An app cannot use the camera or microphone: confirm its permission is declared and approved, check the phone-to-glasses connection, and make sure another app is not using the camera. Also check device compatibility; a display-only device cannot provide a camera API.
- An app behaves differently across glasses: verify its supported hardware and test device-specific fallbacks. Display-first and camera-first apps have different requirements.
- Photos look worse than expected: check whether the glasses are transferring over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The documented Bluetooth-only resolutions are lower and compressed.
- Local development cannot connect: the relay cannot reach a developer’s private
localhostdirectly. The quickstart uses a public tunnel such as ngrok to expose the development server. - Development drains the battery or causes heat: Mentra’s low-level guide advises reducing Wi-Fi scanning, compressing images efficiently, releasing resources and stopping streams when they are not needed.
Who should consider Mentra Live?
It is most compelling for developers, enterprise pilots and technically capable teams that want a camera-and-audio wearable they can extend, or that can build a controlled direct integration. It may also suit audio-first users who want capture, voice or accessibility-oriented functions and do not need a visual display. Mentra’s business site promotes private apps and team deployments, reinforcing that customization is part of the product’s intended use.
It is a weaker fit if you want captions, navigation or messages displayed in your field of view; expect a standalone device without a phone; require every MiniApp to work offline; or do not want app functionality to depend on cloud services. It is also a less obvious choice for someone seeking a large, established consumer app catalog rather than a platform whose value depends on which apps are available and maintained.

If a visual overlay matters more, compare display-based options such as Even Realities G1 or Vuzix Z100. They are not interchangeable: their display capabilities change what apps can do.
Price and availability
Mentra’s current /live product page lists Mentra Live at $349, says fulfillment typically takes 1–3 days, and describes shipping as currently limited to the United States, with broader availability expected during 2026. It also lists a 30-day no-questions-asked return policy. However, another official product page still shows $299. The pages do not explain the discrepancy, so verify the price, shipping eligibility and return terms at checkout rather than assuming one listing is definitive.
The product page says the Mentra app works with iOS and Android. The Apple App Store listing is specifically for iPhone; that listing alone does not independently confirm Android availability. Mentra also lists compatibility with Mentra Live, Even Realities G1 and Vuzix Z100, but app features remain dependent on each device’s hardware.
The real bet
Mentra Live’s most distinctive idea is not that camera glasses suddenly have a display or that every app is private and offline. It is that a shared, inspectable software platform and a MiniApp catalog might give wearable hardware more room to evolve than a fixed set of manufacturer features. That is a credible developer proposition. For consumers, its value is conditional: it depends on the quality and compatibility of the apps they actually want, the phone and network experience, and their comfort with the services behind those apps. The platform’s long-term test is whether the ecosystem and service infrastructure become dependable enough to make extensibility useful rather than merely possible.
