Meta and Oakley’s “Performance AI” glasses are camera-and-audio smart glasses for sports—not conventional augmented-reality glasses with an in-lens display. The range began with the Oakley Meta HSTN in June 2025 and expanded with the more rugged Oakley Meta Vanguard in September 2025.
Both combine Oakley frames and lenses with Meta’s camera, open-ear speakers, microphones, voice controls and Meta AI. Vanguard is the sports-focused option, with a wraparound fit, IP67 protection, Garmin and Strava features, workout feedback and additional action-capture modes. Neither pair replaces a Garmin watch, cycling computer, smartphone or professional coach.
What Meta and Oakley actually announced
The original announcement was made on June 20, 2025, when Meta and Oakley introduced the Oakley Meta line and described HSTN as the first product in a new Performance AI glasses category. The limited-edition HSTN was scheduled to enter preorder on July 11 at $499, while the standard range was announced from $399.
That was followed by the Oakley Meta Vanguard announcement on September 17, 2025. Vanguard was designed for high-intensity sports and launched on October 21 at $499. It is not simply a renamed HSTN: it uses a more secure sport frame and adds features aimed at cycling, skiing, snowboarding, trail running and similar activities.

“Performance AI” is product-category branding rather than an established technical standard. In practical terms, it means hands-free camera capture, open-ear audio, voice access to Meta AI and access to selected fitness data from connected services.
What the glasses do
Hands-free photos and video
The glasses can capture what the wearer is seeing without requiring a phone to be held in front of them. Vanguard has a centered 12MP camera, a 122-degree wide-angle lens and video capture advertised at up to 3K. Its additional modes include slow motion, hyperlapse, adjustable stabilization and automatic capture.
Oakley’s U.S. product page lists image acquisition at 3024×4032 pixels, along with video modes including 720p at 120 frames per second and 2203×2938 at 30 frames per second. The “3K” description therefore does not mean every recording mode uses the same resolution or frame rate.
Vanguard also includes 32GB of flash storage, listed as enough for more than 500 photos or more than 100 30-second videos. That is convenient for short first-person clips, but it does not make the glasses a universal replacement for a dedicated action camera. Rough terrain, low light, lens dirt, glare, wind noise, stabilization and recording heat can all affect results.
Open-ear audio and calls
Both models use open-ear speakers, allowing music, calls and spoken assistant responses without sealing the ear canal. Meta says Vanguard’s speakers are six decibels louder than HSTN’s and are designed to remain usable in wind conditions up to 30 mph. That is a manufacturer comparison, not independent laboratory testing.
Open-ear audio can help preserve awareness of traffic and other surroundings, but it does not eliminate wind, road noise or crowd noise. Intelligibility depends on fit, wind direction, volume, hearing ability and the environment. Runners and cyclists should still follow local safety rules and avoid assuming that audio awareness makes every situation safe.
Voice-controlled Meta AI
The wearer can use voice commands to interact with Meta AI, ask questions and control supported functions. In a workout context, the most useful capability is access to connected activity information rather than a wholly independent AI coach.

The glasses can provide audio feedback, while a status LED visible in the wearer’s peripheral vision can indicate whether the wearer is on target for a metric.

The important qualification is that the glasses do not independently measure every athletic metric. When Meta describes heart-rate or pace information, that data can come from connected Garmin hardware or another supported service.

Battery figures are manufacturer estimates under specified usage conditions. Continuous recording, high-volume audio, calls, AI requests, poor connectivity and cold weather can reduce runtime substantially.

HSTN is the more natural choice if the glasses need to look and feel like everyday eyewear. Vanguard costs more for its sport-oriented fit, higher protection rating and more extensive capture and workout features. IPX4 is intended for sweat and splashing; it is not equivalent to Vanguard’s IP67 rating.

Vanguard’s sports functions are best understood as a hands-free interface to a connected fitness ecosystem.
- Set up the glasses: Pair them through the Meta AI app, sign in with a Meta account and grant the required permissions.
- Connect supported services: Link a compatible Garmin device or supported health and activity services. Garmin hardware is sold separately.
- Start the workout: The connected device or service remains responsible for collecting the relevant activity data.
- Ask for information: With the required connection active, use voice commands to request pace, heart rate, workout status or progress toward a target.
- Capture the activity: Record manually or use supported automatic-capture features.
- Review and share: Activity summaries and Garmin or Strava metrics can be used in supported overlays and sharing workflows.
These integrations are not identical. Garmin is the more relevant source for real-time workout metrics when a compatible device is connected. Strava is primarily relevant to activity sharing and post-activity overlays. Later Meta materials also list Apple Health and Android Health Connect connections for activity summaries.
Compatibility can depend on the exact Garmin device, phone operating system, country, language, app version and software updates. Buyers should verify supported devices and features before purchase rather than assuming that every watch or every metric will work.
They are not display-based AR glasses
HSTN and Vanguard have cameras, microphones, open-ear speakers, touch controls and status indicators, but the cited product materials do not describe a conventional in-lens visual display. They are better classified as AI camera glasses with open-ear audio than as display-based augmented-reality glasses.

That distinction matters. The wearer generally hears information or uses the phone and app rather than seeing pace, maps or AI answers projected into the lens. The peripheral status LED can provide a simple indication for some workout metrics, but it is not a full heads-up display.

Phone, app and account requirements
These are not fully standalone training computers. Oakley lists the following requirements for Vanguard:
- Android 10 or later, or iOS 14.4 or later
- Location services enabled for Android
- Wireless internet access
- A valid Meta account
- The Meta AI app
- A USB-C charging plug; the USB-C charging cable is not included according to Oakley’s product listing
The glasses provide the physical interface—camera, microphones, speakers and local controls—but the phone and connected services remain central to setup, AI features, sharing, updates and integrations. Meta AI availability can vary by country and language, so buyers should check the current supported-phone and regional requirements.
Fit, durability and prescription considerations
Vanguard uses Oakley’s Three-Point Fit system, replaceable nose pads and an O Matter frame. Oakley describes the design as suitable for use with cycling helmets and hats and lists three nose-pad options for different bridge fits. It is a wide, universal-fit model, so the wraparound shape may still work poorly with some face shapes, helmets or prescription requirements.

IP67 means protection against dust and temporary immersion under defined test conditions. It does not mean unlimited submersion or guaranteed resistance to saltwater, sunscreen, sweat, chemicals, impacts or extreme temperatures. The lenses, charging contacts, microphones, speakers and charging case can also have different practical vulnerabilities.
Prescription selection is available for some configurations, but eligibility depends on the frame, lens type, prescription range, region and fulfillment process. Buyers should confirm that their prescription can be fitted before ordering.

Because the glasses contain cameras and microphones, recording is a social and legal issue as much as a technical one. The recording indicator may be visible in normal conditions, but people nearby may not notice it—especially outdoors, in crowds or during fast-moving activities.
Ask for consent where appropriate and check rules before recording in races, gyms, schools, changing areas, workplaces or organized events. Some event organizers prohibit wearable cameras regardless of whether recording is obvious.
Also consider where captures and workout information travel. Photos and videos may move through Meta’s app and services, while activity information can involve Garmin, Strava, Apple Health or Google Health Connect depending on the setup. Review the current privacy policies and app permissions for the services you intend to connect rather than assuming that all data stays on the glasses.

Before returning or reselling the glasses, Oakley’s instructions advise importing captures, factory-resetting the device, deleting captures and turning it off. That process helps separate your account and personal data from the hardware.
Current price and availability
Prices vary by market, lens configuration, prescription options, promotions and date. As checked on August 18, 2026, Oakley’s U.S. product page showed Vanguard at $499 and HSTN at $479 in the product-style selector. The Vanguard colorway displayed at that time showed an availability-notification prompt rather than an immediate purchase flow, so stock should be checked directly before ordering.
Meta’s May 2026 comparison listed HSTN from $399, Vanguard from $499 and Ray-Ban Meta from $379. Those are comparison starting prices, not a guarantee of the current price for every configuration.

Availability is regional. Oakley lists markets including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Australia. Shipping exclusions and regional restrictions apply; Oakley specifically says it cannot ship these glasses to Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico.
Which model should an athlete buy?
Choose Oakley Meta Vanguard if:
- You regularly cycle, ski, snowboard, trail-run or train outdoors at high intensity.
- You want a more secure wraparound frame and higher dust-and-water protection.
- You already use compatible Garmin hardware or Strava.
- You want automatic capture, workout feedback and performance overlays.
- You accept a $499 sports-specific wearable that still depends on a phone and connected accounts.
Choose Oakley Meta HSTN if:
- You want a more conventional everyday frame.
- Your exercise is casual or moderate.
- You value daily wear and style more than maximum protection.
- IPX4 protection is sufficient for your use.
- You want the lower announced entry price, subject to current configuration and availability.
Choose Ray-Ban Meta instead if:
Your priority is everyday photography, calls, music, messaging and general AI assistance rather than a sport-specific fit, IP67 protection or Vanguard’s workout features. Meta’s official comparison lists Ray-Ban Meta from $379, although current prices depend on model and market: Meta’s AI glasses page.
Choose conventional sports sunglasses plus separate fitness devices if:
- You do not want a camera or microphone on your face.
- You already own a Garmin watch or cycling computer and only need dedicated training metrics.
- You prioritize low cost, replaceability, minimal charging or race compliance.
- You need specialized lenses, a lighter frame or a prescription option that these models cannot provide.
- You do not want workouts and captures connected to Meta’s app ecosystem.
Bottom line
Oakley Meta Vanguard is best viewed as a hands-free capture and audio interface for athletes who already live in a connected fitness ecosystem. It can make pace, heart-rate and workout-status information easier to access while moving, and its sport frame is better suited to demanding outdoor use than HSTN’s lifestyle design.

But “Performance AI” does not mean a self-contained AI coach, built-in heart-rate sensor or full augmented-reality display. Vanguard and HSTN still rely on a compatible phone, Meta AI app, accounts, connectivity and—in many workout scenarios—separate fitness hardware. Buy Vanguard for its combination of sport fit, camera and connected feedback; buy HSTN for more casual everyday use; or choose conventional sports eyewear if simplicity, privacy and dedicated training equipment matter more.
