Meta Aria Gen 2 is not a normal consumer AR headset. It is a displayless, research-focused wearable-computing platform built to capture synchronized first-person data for machine perception, contextual AI, robotics, accessibility and spatial-computing research. Its reported sensor suite includes a nosepad photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor for estimating heart rate and a contact microphone designed to capture the wearer’s voice through frame vibrations.

That heart-rate capability should not be confused with a medical monitor or fitness-tracker feature, and Aria Gen 2 is not generally sold through ordinary retail channels.

What Meta Aria Gen 2 is

Project Aria is Meta’s research program for collecting multimodal, human-perspective data. Aria Gen 2 combines cameras, eye tracking, audio, inertial sensing, location, physiological sensing and local machine-perception processing in a glasses-shaped platform. Meta has described the system in connection with accessibility work, including research into memory assistance and spatial awareness for people with disabilities (Meta).

“AR glasses” is useful shorthand, but technically incomplete. Aria Gen 2 is reported to be displayless: it does not project virtual objects or information into the wearer’s view like a conventional see-through AR headset. Its cameras and sensors collect information that researchers can use to build future perception and interface systems (UploadVR).

How the heart-rate sensor works

The glasses reportedly include a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor positioned in or around the nosepad. PPG uses optical signals to detect changes in blood volume near the skin and estimate pulse rate. A nosepad is a practical location because it can maintain close contact with the wearer’s skin while the glasses are worn.

For researchers, pulse data can be synchronized with gaze, head movement, video, audio and hand activity. That could support studies of activity recognition, physiological context, human-computer interaction, accessibility and embodied AI.

However, the available specifications establish the presence and intended use of a PPG sensor—not medical validation. There is no evidence here that Aria Gen 2 is a cleared medical device, a clinical heart monitor, or a demonstrated replacement for an ECG, chest strap or dedicated smartwatch. PPG accuracy can also be affected by movement, fit, skin contact, light leakage and perspiration. Do not infer blood oxygen, blood pressure, stress, arrhythmia detection or other health metrics from the heart-rate claim alone.

What the contact microphone does

A contact microphone detects mechanical vibration conducted through the glasses rather than depending only on sound traveling through the air. Aria Gen 2’s reported contact microphone is integrated around the nosebridge or nosepad and is intended to help isolate the wearer’s speech from nearby voices and environmental noise (DeepLearning.AI).

This can be useful for speech recognition in traffic, crowds, factories or robotics labs, and for studying quiet speech or whispers. It is signal isolation, not active noise cancellation and not a privacy guarantee. The ambient microphone array can still capture surrounding sound, while the contact channel may pick up chewing, jaw movement, wind-induced frame vibration, touching the frame or artifacts caused by a poor fit. Performance depends on nosepad contact, calibration and processing software.

Sensor and hardware breakdown

Cameras and perception

  • One RGB camera for the wearer’s point of view.
  • Eye-facing cameras for gaze, blinking, pupil measurements and vergence.
  • Stereo computer-vision/SLAM cameras for three-dimensional scene understanding.
  • Four reported global-shutter computer-vision cameras—twice the number reported for Gen 1.
  • Reported HDR capability of about 120 dB and stereo overlap of roughly 80 degrees, compared with about 35 degrees for the first-generation system (Wareable).

These systems support visual-inertial odometry, scene reconstruction, depth estimation, spatial mapping, hand tracking and object tracking. They should not be assumed to behave like the camera on a retail smart-glasses product, whose primary purpose is taking consumer photos and video.

Audio

Aria Gen 2 has open-ear speakers, an ambient or spatial microphone array and a separate contact microphone. Published reports disagree slightly about the total microphone count: one account describes seven ambient microphones plus the contact mic, while another describes eight microphones in total. Until Meta publishes a definitive hardware specification, “microphone array plus dedicated contact microphone” is the safest description.

Motion, location and environmental sensing

Reported components include two inertial-measurement units, a barometer, magnetometer, global navigation satellite receiver, ambient-light sensing, an ultraviolet-perception mode for distinguishing indoor and outdoor lighting, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity or beacon support. Together, these signals help align head movement, orientation, location, lighting and visual observations.

Compute, storage and timing

Secondary technical coverage attributes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835-class processor, about 4 GB of RAM, approximately 128 GB of storage and a dedicated energy-efficient coprocessor for real-time perception. Local processing is reported for functions such as SLAM, eye tracking, hand tracking and speech-related workloads; not every possible AI workflow should be assumed to run offline.

One of the platform’s most important research features is hardware-assisted synchronization. Reports describe Sub-GHz radio support for aligning compatible devices with sub-millisecond accuracy and a common clock that timestamps sensor readings at very high resolution. That lets researchers line up video, gaze, audio, movement, physiological signals and data from multiple devices without reconstructing timing afterward (technical overview).

The reported frame weighs about 74–76 grams, commonly rounded to 75 g. Continuous use is estimated at roughly six to eight hours, depending on recording, tracking and transmission workloads; it is not a guaranteed runtime for every configuration.

Why researchers care

Aria Gen 2’s value is the combination of synchronized signals rather than any single sensor. Potential applications include:

Retail Ray-Ban Meta glasses are the practical choice for camera capture, open-ear audio and consumer AI. They do not substitute for Aria’s raw research streams, physiological sensor, detailed eye tracking or sub-millisecond synchronization. Conversely, readers who specifically want visual information in the lens should look at the separate Meta Ray-Ban Display line, listed from $799 in the United States in the supplied material. That is a different commercial product, not Aria Gen 2.

Can you buy Meta Aria Gen 2?

Aria Gen 2 is not presented as a normal retail product with a consumer MSRP. Meta has described access for academic and corporate research partners through an application process. Availability, geography, eligibility, documentation, licensing and whether hardware is loaned or supplied under an agreement can change, so prospective teams should verify the current terms directly with Meta.

Practical limitations and privacy issues

  • Fit: Nosepad geometry and facial variation can affect PPG and contact-microphone coupling.
  • Motion: Vigorous movement can degrade pulse, gaze and tracking signals.
  • Indoor location: GNSS is weak or unavailable indoors; visual-inertial systems or infrastructure may be needed.
  • Battery: Recording several cameras while running tracking and radios can reduce runtime below the headline estimate.
  • Privacy: Cameras and ambient microphones may capture bystanders, while gaze, location and physiological data require explicit study governance.
  • Display misconception: Sensor-rich AR research hardware does not mean the wearer sees virtual overlays.
  • Medical overclaiming: A PPG signal is not evidence of diagnosis or clinical-grade monitoring.

The Bottom Line

Meta Aria Gen 2 is significant because it synchronizes vision, audio, gaze, movement and physiological signals in a wearable research platform—not because it turns ordinary glasses into a medical monitor or full AR headset. Its PPG heart-rate sensor and contact microphone could enable better multimodal AI and accessibility research, while its displayless design, research-only access and substantial privacy and fit constraints define what it is not.
