Short answer: The December 2024 report was broadly accurate, but the result was not a display-equipped update to existing Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Meta launched a separate product, Meta Ray-Ban Display, in the United States on September 30, 2025, starting at $799 with a Meta Neural Band included.
What the 2024 report actually predicted
On December 23, 2024, reporting said Meta was preparing Ray-Ban-branded smart glasses with a small display for the second half of 2025. The expected purpose was practical: showing notifications and responses from Meta AI, rather than delivering the full augmented-reality experience demonstrated by Meta’s Orion prototype. Contemporary reporting also distinguished the planned product from ordinary Ray-Ban Meta camera-and-audio glasses.
The important distinction is that “Ray-Ban smart glasses will add a display” did not mean existing owners would receive a screen through a firmware update. Meta released a separate, more expensive display model. Some earlier coverage reportedly referred to the product by the name “Hypernova,” but Meta’s public name is Meta Ray-Ban Display.

What Meta launched
Meta announced Meta Ray-Ban Display at Meta Connect on September 17, 2025. It went on sale in the United States on September 30, starting at $799. That price includes the glasses, Meta Neural Band, charging case, USB-C cable, cleaning cloth, manuals, and a charger for the band. Prices can vary with lens, frame, prescription, tax, promotion, and region.

The launch was US-focused. Meta announced plans to expand to Canada, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom in early 2026, but availability should be checked on the current country-specific Ray-Ban product and FAQ pages rather than assumed from the launch announcement. The official material available for this article identifies the product as currently available in the United States.
How the display works
Meta Ray-Ban Display has a full-color, 600×600-pixel display integrated into the right lens. It is monocular, with a 20-degree field of view. That makes it a glanceable interface, not a full-lens or binocular augmented-reality environment.

Official product material lists these uses:
- Walking directions and visual maps
- Live captions and translation
- Messages and notifications
- Replies to WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and phone messages
- Music information, including album art and other visual content
- Photo previews
- Meta AI interactions
The best description is AI glasses with a small monocular display—a bridge between screen-free camera glasses and more capable binocular AR glasses. It should not be treated as “Orion for sale.” Meta’s Orion prototype, demonstrated in September 2024, represents a much broader spatial-computing concept; the commercial Ray-Ban product is substantially more limited.

The Neural Band is not an optional add-on for this model. It is bundled with every Meta Ray-Ban Display package and is central to the advertised control system.

The wristband uses surface electromyography, or EMG, to detect electrical signals associated with subtle muscle activity in the wrist and hand. It translates intended gestures into controls and provides haptic feedback, allowing the wearer to interact without relying entirely on voice, the glasses’ temple controls, or a phone. It is not mind-reading.
Meta advertises up to 18 hours of battery life for the band. Pairing the glasses and band takes place through the Meta AI app. If the band is unpaired, depleted, damaged, or unavailable, the glasses may still provide limited functionality, but the Neural Band controls will not work until the connection is restored. That additional wearable is both a potential advantage and a practical dependency.

Battery figures require care. Meta’s launch announcement said the charging case could provide up to 30 hours of total battery life, while the current Ray-Ban product page lists up to 24 hours with the case. Those are both manufacturer claims; the difference may reflect testing conditions, firmware, or a revised product page. The glasses’ advertised six-hour mixed-use figure also should not be interpreted as all-day battery life for continuous display use.

Meta Ray-Ban Display is not a standalone phone replacement. Users need a supported Android or iPhone, a Meta account, and the Meta AI mobile app. Wireless internet is required for important functions including Meta AI, importing captures, and software updates. Some camera capture and voice functions can work without Wi-Fi, but the complete experience cannot.

Ray-Ban’s specification page lists Android 10 or later and iOS 15.2 or later. The Display FAQ lists Android 10 or later with location services enabled, but gives iOS 14.4 or later. Because the official pages are inconsistent, buyers should confirm the current requirement for their phone before ordering.

The starting-price gap is at least $420 before tax, prescription lenses, or other configuration changes. Choose standard Ray-Ban Meta if your priority is hands-free photography, calls, open-ear audio, music, and voice AI. It is lighter and simpler, and avoids charging or pairing a wristband.
Meta Ray-Ban Display makes more sense if you regularly want walking directions, live captions, translation, glanceable messages, or visual AI results without taking out your phone. It is an early-generation wearable interface, and the premium pays primarily for the display and its control system—not simply for better camera glasses.
Limitations to consider
- Comfort: Ray-Ban lists the frame at 68g, substantially heavier than ordinary sunglasses. Fit and willingness to wear the glasses all day are personal questions.
- Battery: The display and band create more charging obligations than passive eyewear. Carrying the case is practical rather than optional for long days.
- Connectivity: AI, imports, and updates depend on a supported phone, app, account, and network.
- Privacy: The glasses still contain cameras and microphones. Pay attention to recording indicators, local laws, venue rules, and whether people nearby understand that capture may be occurring.
- Gesture reliability: EMG control may be affected by band fit, position, movement, sweat, clothing, or individual differences. Marketing demonstrations do not establish universal ease or accuracy.
- Prescription use: The supplied sources do not verify the complete Display-specific prescription range. Confirm the exact configuration with Ray-Ban before purchase.
- Demonstrations: A store may offer a demo without having every size, prescription option, or configuration in stock.
Where to buy or try it
Meta’s launch announcement named Best Buy, LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, Ray-Ban stores, and later select Verizon stores as retail locations. Ray-Ban also provides store pages for demonstrations and appointments. Check the official product page and store locator before visiting; named retailers may differ in stock, demos, prescription ordering, and shipping.
Verdict
The 2024 report got the broad direction and timing right: Meta did release Ray-Ban smart glasses with a display in 2025. But the final product was a distinct $799 model, not a software upgrade for existing Ray-Ban Meta glasses and not a consumer version of Orion. Its 20-degree monocular display and Neural Band make it useful for glanceable information, navigation, captions, translation, and messaging, while the price, six-hour glasses battery claim, 68g weight, phone dependence, and additional wristband are significant trade-offs.
