Short answer: Meta appears to have prototyped facial-recognition functionality for its AI smart-glasses ecosystem, reportedly under the name Name Tag. However, the feature has not been publicly launched as a normal consumer capability. The latest official Ray-Ban documentation cited here says that “no facial recognition technology is used.”
The evidence has developed in stages: a February 2026 report described a possible future product, while June reporting found related unreleased code in the Meta AI companion app. That is stronger evidence of development—but it still does not prove that Meta will ship the feature, or explain how it would handle consent, matching, storage, or geographic availability.
What the original report claimed
On February 13, 2026, TechCrunch summarized a New York Times report saying Meta was considering facial recognition for its smart glasses. The reported internal name was Name Tag.

The report said Meta had considered similar functionality for an earlier generation of Ray-Ban smart glasses, but abandoned it amid technical, ethical, and privacy concerns. It also described a possible accessibility-focused test involving people with visual impairments.

The reported timetable was tentative: the feature could arrive “as soon as” 2026, but the plans were not final. This was an account of internal discussions and an internal memo—not a public product announcement from Meta.
June code discoveries made the story more credible
The story moved beyond an anonymous-source report in June. WIRED reported on June 4 that researchers found substantial unreleased facial-recognition code inside the Meta AI companion app used by Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses.
The reported code included the NameTag name, facial-recognition workflows, and storage-related components. Because the companion app is required for important smart-glasses functions—and had reportedly been downloaded by more than 50 million people—the discovery suggested that Meta had done meaningful implementation work.

But code in an app is not the same as a finished product. It can represent an experiment, an internal test, a cancelled feature, or an unfinished system. WIRED subsequently reported that Meta removed the relevant code after publication. That does not establish whether development ended permanently, was moved elsewhere, or was redesigned.
Is facial recognition available on current Meta glasses?
Not as an officially supported public feature, based on the current documentation cited in this article. The Ray-Ban Meta FAQ says: “No facial recognition technology is used.”

That statement needs a precise interpretation. Current glasses can use Meta AI to analyze what their camera sees, including:
- Reading and translating signs or documents
- Describing scenes and surroundings
- Identifying objects, plants, or landmarks
- Answering questions about visible clothing or other details
Those capabilities are visual AI, not necessarily biometric identification. Facial recognition in the relevant sense would involve creating or using a biometric representation of a face, comparing it with a reference image or database, and returning a person’s identity or associated information.

So it would be inaccurate to say that current Meta glasses cannot recognize anything about a person. They may describe a person or read a name badge. The unsupported claim is that they currently identify people by matching their faces to names or profiles.
What Name Tag might do
The final design remains unknown. Possible models include:
- Matching faces only against contacts deliberately added by the wearer
- Recognizing people who have mutually enrolled or opted in
- Matching against information associated with Meta accounts or services
- Reading a badge or other visible context rather than performing biometric matching
- Processing the face locally on the glasses or the wearer’s phone
- Sending an image or biometric template to Meta’s servers for analysis
None of these models has been confirmed as the planned consumer implementation. In a March 17 letter to Meta, Senators Edward Markey, Ron Wyden, and Jeff Merkley specifically asked whether faces would be matched against profiles, images, or identifiers stored on Meta-owned platforms.

Why face recognition is more sensitive than ordinary camera use
Camera-equipped glasses already create a notice problem: people nearby may not know when they are being recorded or when the camera is being used. Facial recognition adds another layer by potentially linking a captured face to a real-world identity.

A broadly available system could allow someone to identify strangers without their cooperation, potentially exposing their name, workplace, social profile, or other personal information. The risks include stalking, harassment, targeted intimidation, doxxing, and the normalization of biometric identification in ordinary public spaces. Unlike a password, a face is difficult to replace after biometric data or templates have been exposed.
The senators’ letter asked Meta about data retention, model training, privacy impact assessments, accuracy, bias, misuse, user controls, and law-enforcement access. Their public statement described concerns including mass surveillance and abuse.
The accessibility case is real—but does not settle the privacy debate
Facial recognition could offer legitimate benefits for blind and low-vision users. A carefully limited system might help a wearer recognize trusted friends, family members, or coworkers, identify someone in a meeting, or avoid repeatedly asking for names.
Meta already promotes AI glasses for accessibility, including reading documents, identifying objects, and interpreting surroundings. Its accessibility announcement describes these uses, while a separate program for blind veterans highlights hands-free assistance.

Those benefits do not automatically justify unrestricted recognition of strangers. A less invasive design could require an opt-in personal contact list, mutual enrollment, local processing, clear match indicators, short retention periods, and no automatic matching against a global database. These are safeguards to evaluate—not features Meta has confirmed.
What Meta’s current privacy safeguards cover
Meta says a capture LED indicates when photos or videos are being recorded for the wearer’s gallery, and that the LED cannot be disabled through normal settings. On newer models, the camera is disabled if the LED is blocked or tampered with. Details appear in Meta’s AI glasses FAQ.
There is an important limitation: the LED is primarily described as signaling gallery capture, not every use of the camera. The Ray-Ban FAQ says some AI camera queries can occur without the capture LED because the content is not intended to be saved as gallery media. It also says photos and videos used for AI features are not saved in Meta AI conversation history, and that certain identifiable information, such as license plates and phone numbers, may be removed in relevant processing.
That means the privacy light should not be treated as proof that all camera-based AI activity is visible to bystanders. It is a recording and anti-tampering safeguard, not a guarantee that every analysis attempt is signaled.

Technical failure modes matter
Even a restricted system would need to address:
- False positives: incorrectly identifying a stranger as someone else
- False negatives: failing to recognize a known person and creating misplaced confidence
- Bias: uneven performance across skin tones, ages, genders, disabilities, lighting conditions, and camera angles
- Real-world conditions: poor results in crowds, darkness, motion, or partial occlusion
- Outdated information: returning an old name, employer, relationship, or profile detail
- Security failures: exposing a recognition list if the phone, account, or app is compromised
- Abuse: use by stalkers, abusive partners, employers, private investigators, or officials
A wearer should never treat an AI-generated match as verified fact, particularly in situations involving safety, employment, access control, or confrontation.

Legal and regulatory questions
It is too broad to declare that facial recognition on smart glasses would be illegal nationwide. The legal outcome would depend on the jurisdiction, the use case, whether the system processes biometric identifiers, where processing occurs, whether data is stored, and whether the subject has consented.
Commercial, private, enterprise, government, and law-enforcement uses could face different rules. State biometric-privacy, consumer-protection, surveillance, and data-security laws may also apply differently. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced an investigation into Meta glasses’ privacy practices, citing concerns about facial data and always-enabled processing.
Any future launch would need to clarify whether users can disable matching, whether bystanders can opt out, how minors are handled, how long templates and results remain stored, whether recognition data trains AI models, and whether the system is available in the European Union, United Kingdom, or individual U.S. states.
Timeline

- As of August 18, 2026: The cited Ray-Ban FAQ still stated that no facial-recognition technology is used.
What this means for buyers
Current Meta glasses should not be purchased on the assumption that they include Name Tag or will definitely receive it. Meta’s June announcement put new Meta Glasses at a U.S. starting price of $299, with launch availability beginning in the United States and Canada and other markets rolling out over time; prices and availability vary by region. Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses offer camera, microphone, connected-assistant, and visual-AI functions, so they are a poor fit for anyone unwilling to use a companion smartphone app or accept those privacy trade-offs. Conventional glasses remain the strongest privacy alternative. Phone-based accessibility tools may provide similar visual assistance without mounting a camera on the wearer’s face, although they can still involve phone cameras and cloud processing.
What to watch if Meta announces Name Tag
The decisive details will be the matching database, consent model, processing location, retention period, deletion controls, accuracy warnings, independent testing, logging, law-enforcement policy, and geographic restrictions. The most privacy-preserving version would recognize only enrolled contacts, avoid global searches, process data locally where practical, and make every recognition attempt clear to the wearer and affected people.
