Meta’s wristband does not read brain waves or decode private thoughts. It detects electrical activity associated with muscles at the wrist—signals downstream of the brain’s motor commands—and uses AI to infer intended hand movements. The technology is real, and Meta announced a consumer version called the Meta Neural Band in 2025, bundled with its Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses.

What does Meta’s wristband actually read?

The band uses surface electromyography, or sEMG. Electrodes touching the skin detect electrical activity associated with muscle activation. In simplified form, the signal path is: the brain sends a motor command through the nervous system; muscles respond; the wristband senses electrical activity at the skin; software interprets patterns associated with trained movements; and the device maps a recognized pattern to a command.

That makes the system an indirect way to infer movement-related intent, not a device that measures brain activity. It has no scalp electrodes like an EEG headset and is not an implanted brain-computer interface. Meta’s use of “Neural Band” is product branding; describing it as a “mind-reading” wristband is misleading. Meta’s explanation of its wrist-based interface describes sensing output from the peripheral nervous system.

How do the sensors and AI work together?

The research hardware described in a peer-reviewed Nature paper published July 23, 2025 used 48 electrode pins arranged in 16 bipolar channels, sampled at 2 kHz, and sent data wirelessly via Bluetooth. The paper reported more than four hours of battery life for that research device; that figure is not the advertised battery specification for the later consumer band.

  1. Sense: Dry electrodes capture changing electrical patterns around the wrist.
  2. Decode: Machine-learning models classify or decode patterns associated with movements such as a thumb swipe, pinch, or subtle finger action.
  3. Act: The recognized pattern is translated into an input, such as moving a cursor, scrolling, or selecting an item.

The models are intended to generalize across users rather than require every person to train a system from scratch. Meta’s paper reports data collection involving thousands of consenting participants, with task-specific cohorts ranging from 162 to 6,627. Meta has also described its work on sEMG datasets and model development. Cross-user generalization is a research goal, not a guarantee that every wearer will get identical results.

What has Meta demonstrated?

In research tasks, the system was used for continuous cursor navigation, discrete gesture recognition, and handwriting-like input made with subtle finger movements. The Nature paper reported these results:

Research task or measure Reported result How to interpret it
Continuous navigation 0.66 target acquisitions per second A result from the paper’s laboratory task, not a general consumer speed rating.
Discrete gestures 0.88 gesture detections per second A task-specific research result.
Handwriting-like input 20.9 words per minute The reported speed in a closed-loop research task, not a promised everyday typing rate.
Personalization 16% handwriting-performance improvement The paper reported this improvement after personalization in its study.
Offline classification More than 90% accuracy in certain evaluations Applies to specified offline evaluations involving held-out participants, not every gesture or real-world use.

These findings show that wrist signals can support more than a single button-like gesture. They do not establish that the consumer product will reproduce the research system’s exact performance. Signal patterns can vary with anatomy, band position, movement style, fatigue, tremor, and session; personalization may improve some tasks. A Nature Electronics summary and Nature Neuroscience commentary also place the work in the context of generalization and personalization challenges.

What is the Meta Neural Band, and can you buy it?

Meta announced the Meta Neural Band with its Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses on September 17, 2025. The company said the glasses-and-band package launched in selected U.S. retail locations on September 30, 2025, with a starting price of $799. That is Meta’s announced U.S. bundle price, not a separately established price for the band.

Meta describes the band as enabling subtle finger movements to scroll, click, and navigate compatible display-glasses experiences. Its announcement listed up to 18 hours of battery life, IPX7 water resistance, three sizes, and Black and Sand color options; these are Meta’s stated product specifications, not independent test results. The launch announcement identified selected retailers including Best Buy, LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, and Ray-Ban Stores, with selected Verizon locations to follow. Availability and stock can change, so the announcement should not be taken as confirmation of current local inventory.

The consumer product was presented as part of the Meta Ray-Ban Display package, not as a general-purpose standalone wrist controller. The announcement does not establish a separate consumer price for the band. Meta has discussed future possibilities such as composing text with small movements, but those ambitions should not be confused with the announced scrolling, clicking, and navigation controls.

How did the research become a product?

Meta acquired CTRL-Labs in September 2019, and its work became part of Reality Labs’ research into wrist-based neuromotor interaction. The consumer Neural Band is not simply a finished product that Meta bought: development involved work on wearable hardware, data collection, models that could operate across people, product design, and integration with display glasses. The 2025 Nature paper documents the research platform; Meta’s product announcement describes the commercial bundle.

What can it not do?

  • It does not directly record brain waves. Its sensors are at the wrist and detect sEMG-related activity.
  • It does not decode arbitrary thoughts. It infers patterns associated with trained movement or motor intent; that is different from reading memories, emotions, or unspoken sentences.
  • It does not eliminate movement. It can detect subtle or low-amplitude muscular activity that may be hard to see, but its input remains tied to motor signals.
  • It is not guaranteed to recognize every intended gesture. Repositioning, anatomical differences, fatigue, tremor, or unintended muscle activation can contribute to missed inputs or false activations.
  • It is not established as a medical device or treatment. Potential accessibility applications do not by themselves prove clinical effectiveness.

The technology sits near the intersection of human-computer interaction and brain-computer-interface research, but terminology depends on how broadly “BCI” is used. In the broad research sense it is a non-invasive neuromotor interface discussed alongside BCI work; in the strict sense of directly measuring brain activity, it is not a brain-computer interface.

Could it help with accessibility?

Meta has pointed to potential use for people who cannot make large movements, have tremors, have spinal-cord injuries or stroke-related impairments, or have fewer than five fingers on a hand. Subtle inputs could make interaction less physically demanding for some users. Whether the commercial band is useful for a particular person or condition requires direct evaluation; the announcement does not establish medical efficacy, regulatory approval, or suitability as a prescribed assistive device.

What should users consider about privacy?

The relevant distinction is between the electrical signal captured at the wrist, a model’s inferred gesture or intent, the resulting device command, and any usage telemetry. The sensing method alone does not establish exactly what data Meta retains, whether any processing is local or cloud-based in each use, or how data may be used for training. Those details should be checked in the current privacy terms for the product and connected services.

The concern is not that the band can read every thought. It is that biological signals and inferred motor intentions may become another category of personal data, so collection, processing, retention, and sharing policies matter.

Why use the wrist at all?

A wrist-worn interface can be less conspicuous than a head-mounted sensor, can work without a camera seeing the fingers, and may detect small actions that are difficult to observe visually. It is also a natural companion to glasses: a wearer can issue input without reaching for a phone or touching the frames. The trade-off is that the system depends on interpreting variable motor signals and, in the announced consumer version, is tied to compatible Meta hardware and software.
