Short answer: Ray-Ban Meta glasses do not necessarily stream everything the wearer sees to Meta continuously. Ordinary photos and videos can remain on the glasses until import. But when the wearer invokes Meta AI, the glasses can send a spoken request, transcript-related data and camera images to Meta for cloud processing. Meta says AI-processed photos may be stored, used to improve its products and reviewed by trained people. That makes these glasses more than a camera: they are a cloud-connected sensor whose privacy trade-off depends on the feature, settings and software version in use.
What happens when you use Ray-Ban Meta glasses?

The important distinction is between capturing something and asking Meta AI to understand it. Those are not the same privacy event.
The three privacy pathways
1. Ordinary camera capture
Meta describes ordinary gallery photos and videos as being stored privately on the glasses until the user chooses to import them. That is materially different from a claim that every frame is continuously uploaded.

However, “stored on the glasses” does not mean “never leaves the device.” Importing to a phone, synchronising media, sharing it socially or submitting it to an AI feature creates additional data pathways. The relevant question is not simply whether the glasses have a camera, but what the wearer does next.

Meta’s explanation of its AI glasses says users choose whether to send captured media to Meta AI.
2. AI-assisted vision
If the wearer asks Meta AI to describe a scene, read text, translate something or answer a question about the surroundings, the privacy model changes. Meta’s technical system card describes a spoken prompt and captured image being passed to the AI model.
That can involve:
- the spoken request;
- an audio-derived transcript;
- the image captured by the glasses;
- the AI response and related activity data;
- account, phone, location or diagnostic information needed by the feature.
This is why “the glasses are always spying” is too broad, but “nothing is uploaded unless I press the shutter” is also too broad. An AI request can transmit an image even when the wearer is not saving a conventional gallery photo.
3. Cloud media and shared content
Media can move through several stages: glasses storage, phone import, cloud synchronisation, AI submission and social sharing. Each stage can be governed by different terms and controls.
Deleting a gallery item may remove the associated cloud media in the pathway Meta describes. It does not automatically prove that every transcript, activity log, safety record, backup, legal hold or derived data item disappears at the same moment. Save anything needed for records before deleting it.

What Meta says about retention and human review
The most consequential disclosure appears in the Ray-Ban Meta FAQ. It says photos processed with AI are stored and used to improve Meta products, with trained reviewers helping that improvement process.
That does not establish that a human watches every photo or video. It does establish that AI-submitted images are not necessarily confined to a device-only or entirely automated process.
Reports and legal complaints have alleged that workers encountered highly sensitive material while handling data connected with Meta’s smart-glasses systems. Those reports and complaints should be treated as allegations, not proof that all users’ media is routinely viewed by humans. The official disclosure is narrower but still important: some AI-processed photos may be retained and may be accessed by trained reviewers for product improvement.
Readers should also distinguish “used to improve Meta products” from “used for advertising.” Meta’s Privacy Policy says interactions with AI may be used to personalise experiences and ads under a policy update effective December 16, 2025. That does not justify saying that every camera image automatically becomes an advertising profile. The exact feature, account, jurisdiction and policy version matter.
Is Meta AI enabled by default?
There is no single, universal answer for every Ray-Ban Meta generation, country, account and app release.

Ray-Ban’s FAQ says “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’” is on by default. It also describes separate controls for Meta AI and camera use. In practice, a feature being enabled by default is different from being technically impossible to disable.

March 2026 lawsuits allege that Meta changed defaults around AI functionality and data handling in or around April 2025, including claims that some features were effectively always available or difficult to disable. Those are legal allegations, not adjudicated findings.
The safe conclusion is practical: do not assume the setup screen reflects the privacy posture you want. Check the settings after setup, after major app updates and whenever the glasses change hands.
The capture light is a notice, not consent
Meta says each pair has a front capture LED intended to signal when the camera is being used. Ray-Ban also says the glasses should not respond to speech not intended for them and notes limitations affecting LED behaviour during some AI features on first-generation models.

- not recognise the glasses as camera-equipped;
- miss the LED in bright light or a crowded room;
- not know whether the wearer is taking a photo, recording video, invoking AI, livestreaming or simply listening to audio;
- assume that an illuminated light means only a conventional photo is being taken.
The wearer controls the account and device; nearby people generally do not. That matters in offices, classrooms, medical settings, private homes, interviews, protests, changing rooms and any venue that restricts recording. Local law and workplace or school policy may impose additional requirements.
Do not mask, obstruct or tamper with the capture indicator. If recording is prohibited or people object, the appropriate solution is not to use the camera-enabled glasses.

According to the current Ray-Ban FAQ, the basic management path is:
- Open the Meta AI app.
- Tap the gear icon in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Meta AI, or select the connected glasses.
- Review the controls for Meta AI and Camera use.
- Check any additional prompts shown by your version of the app.
Labels and menu locations can vary by device generation, operating system, country and app version. Look for controls relating to:

- camera use;
- voice controls;
- responding without “Hey Meta”;
- voice activity or the activity log;
- cloud media and imports;
- location permissions;
- sharing to Meta services;
- data download and deletion.
Meta says users can view and download information provided to its AI system, view privacy settings and turn voice controls on or off. Ray-Ban’s FAQ also describes a voice-activity log and data download options.

These controls reduce particular pathways; they do not turn the glasses into ordinary sunglasses. Phone pairing, imports, calls, messages, location, account information and diagnostics may still involve data collection.
What the glasses can do—and what you trade for it
The appeal is real. Ray-Ban Meta glasses can offer hands-free photos and video, open-ear audio, calls, messages, translation, text recognition, visual descriptions and contextual assistance. For accessibility or situations where holding a phone is impractical, the convenience can be substantial.
The trade-off is that the most useful visual features depend on a relationship with Meta’s cloud AI. The glasses are therefore not simply a camera with a privacy light. They combine a camera, microphones, phone connection, account, app and AI service, each with its own potential data path.
Who should buy them?
They may be a reasonable fit if you:
- want hands-free photography, calls, audio or translation;
- accept cloud processing for selected AI interactions;
- are willing to inspect settings after setup and updates;
- will avoid confidential environments;
- understand that people nearby may object even when the LED is active.
They are a poor fit if you:
- need guaranteed local-only processing;
- handle protected health, legal, financial, government or trade-secret information;
- work where recording is prohibited;
- cannot accept the possibility of human review for AI-submitted images;
- want a camera-free wearable;
- do not want a Meta account, Meta app or Meta cloud relationship;
- expect a visible LED to provide meaningful consent from everyone nearby.
Questions to ask before buying
- Can the feature I want work without Meta AI?
- Does it send an image, voice prompt or transcript to Meta?
- Is the feature available in my country and language?
- Which settings are enabled after setup?
- What stops working if I disable AI, camera use or voice controls?
- Can I delete the relevant media, transcript and activity record?
- Does my workplace, school, venue or local law permit use?
- Would ordinary sunglasses plus wireless earbuds meet my needs?
Common privacy assumptions that do not hold
- “The LED means everyone has consented.”
- No. It is a notification mechanism, not universal consent.
- “Turning off Meta AI stops all data collection.”
- No. It addresses an important AI pathway but not necessarily pairing, imports, calls, messages, location or diagnostics.
- “Deleting a photo deletes everything.”
- Meta says gallery deletion also removes the corresponding cloud media in the described pathway. That is not a universal promise about logs, transcripts, backups or derived data.
- “Meta employees watch everything.”
- The official evidence supports the narrower claim that trained reviewers may assist with improvement using AI-processed photos.
- “The glasses continuously upload every scene.”
- The supplied official sources do not establish that. They support a conditional but consequential risk: AI interactions can send images and voice-derived data to Meta.
Bottom line
Ray-Ban Meta glasses are not proven to be an always-on livestream of everything around the wearer. Ordinary gallery media can remain on the glasses until import. But activating Meta AI can send images, spoken prompts and related data to Meta, where the company says AI-processed photos may be stored, used for product improvement and reviewed by trained people.
That makes the privacy risk conditional rather than imaginary. If you buy them, inspect every AI, camera, voice, location, cloud-media and deletion setting—and treat the capture LED as a warning, not permission from the people around you.
