Short answer: the March 29, 2024 report that Meta was testing AI features for its Ray-Ban smart glasses was substantially correct. Meta confirmed Meta AI with vision on April 23, 2024, initially as a beta in the United States and Canada. The wording “AI reportedly coming” is now historical: voice-based Meta AI arrived with the second-generation glasses in 2023, while the 2024 update added camera-assisted questions such as identifying a plant or translating a menu.
What the original report said
On March 29, 2024, PhoneArena relayed a New York Times report that Meta was testing three related capabilities for its Ray-Ban smart glasses:
- Recognizing objects and animals
- Translating spoken or written language
- Activating the feature with the voice command “Hey Meta”
At the time, these were reported tests, with a possible rollout as early as April. That was an accurate description of the product’s status on that date, not a permanent promise that the features were still pending.

On April 23, 2024, Meta announced Meta AI with vision for Ray-Ban Meta glasses. The rollout was described as a beta for users in the United States and Canada. Meta’s example was practical: look at a French menu and ask the glasses to translate it.

That announcement turned the rumor into a confirmed product feature, while also limiting how broadly it should be described. The initial beta was not a worldwide, simultaneous release, and feature availability can still vary by country, language, account, model and software version.
AI was not entirely new to the glasses
The distinction matters. When Meta launched the second-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses in September 2023, they already included a voice-controlled Meta AI assistant, initially in beta in the United States. The major 2024 development was multimodal or camera-assisted AI, not the first appearance of AI in any form.

An audio-only request might be “What is the capital of France?” A vision-enabled request is “What does this sign say?” while the glasses capture the sign. Meta’s multimodal AI documentation explains that the captured image is combined with text derived from the user’s spoken request and sent to the AI system.

- Visual questions: ask about an object, scene or houseplant and receive an audio response.
- Translation: ask the glasses to translate visible text; Ray-Ban’s current product information also advertises live conversation translation in supported languages.
- Music recognition: use Shazam to identify nearby music.
- Hands-free capture: take photos and video, then review or share them through the connected phone and Meta AI app.
- Everyday assistant functions: make calls, listen to music or podcasts, and issue voice requests without holding the phone.
- Captions and descriptions: generate a caption for a photo or ask for contextual help with something in view.
Ray-Ban’s official FAQ and product page are the right places to check supported features in your market.
What the glasses do not do
- They are not an offline computer. Ray-Ban says a compatible smartphone and the Meta AI app are required. Connectivity, permissions and server availability affect AI requests.
- They do not provide a normal visual display. Standard Ray-Ban Meta models are primarily audio-first; they are not conventional augmented-reality glasses with text or graphics projected in front of your eyes.
- They cannot identify everything reliably. The system may misread an image, produce an incomplete answer or sound confident while being wrong. Do not use it as the sole basis for medical, legal, safety-critical or accessibility decisions.
- Translation is conditional. Results depend on supported language pairs, lighting, image quality, audio conditions, network access and regional rollout.
Privacy: the camera is part of the AI request
These glasses contain cameras, microphones and speakers. A visual question is not necessarily processed entirely on the frames: Meta’s system documentation says an image captured by the glasses and the spoken request are passed to the AI system.

That creates responsibilities for the wearer. People nearby may appear in a photo, video, call or AI interaction. The camera indicator is intended to signal capture, but it does not replace consent or venue rules. Follow recording laws and policies at workplaces, schools, medical facilities, private property and other restricted locations. Do not use the glasses to covertly record sensitive conversations, screens or documents.

The cited materials establish transmission for AI processing; they do not justify a blanket claim that Meta permanently stores every image. For retention details, consult Meta’s current privacy documentation rather than assuming all interactions are handled identically.

Availability and setup caveats
The original vision announcement covered the United States and Canada beta. Meta has expanded AI features over time, but readers elsewhere should verify eligibility before buying or troubleshooting. Check your country, Ray-Ban Meta model, Meta account, phone compatibility, app version and glasses firmware. Update the app and firmware, pair the glasses over Bluetooth, and grant the camera, microphone and network permissions requested by the app. If a feature does not appear, reconnect the glasses in the Meta AI app and confirm that the feature is offered in your market.
Common problems
- No AI response: check regional eligibility, account status, app and firmware updates, Bluetooth, mobile or Wi-Fi data, and microphone permissions.
- Wrong visual answer: improve lighting, move closer, ask a more specific question and independently verify the result.
- Failed translation: make the text large and steady, reduce glare, speak clearly and confirm that the language pair is supported.
- Fast battery drain: camera-assisted AI, video, calls, livestreaming and music consume more power. Carry the charging case and end visual sessions when finished.
- Someone objects to recording: stop immediately and follow the location’s policy; the indicator light is not a universal substitute for consent.
Who should consider them?
Ray-Ban Meta makes the most sense for someone who wants hands-free photos, calls, music and occasional visual assistance while traveling or moving around. Translation and quick context can be useful, and some people with accessibility needs may benefit, subject to individual testing and availability.
They are a poor fit if you want a private offline assistant, a phone-free device, a full display or professional-grade image recognition. They also may be unsuitable in places where camera-equipped devices are prohibited.
Check the official Ray-Ban buying page for current prices, lens options, warranty and regional availability. Do not assume older launch prices or 2024 feature lists still apply.
Verdict on the original headline
“AI reportedly coming to Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses” was a fair headline on March 29, 2024. It became outdated after Meta’s April 23 confirmation. The accurate current framing is that Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses already received the reported camera-assisted AI upgrade, although availability and capabilities remain market- and software-dependent. Treat the product as connected, audio-first smart glasses with useful visual AI—not as a standalone phone replacement or a pair of full augmented-reality glasses.
