Fitbit Charge 6: the stronger buy when discounted

Charge 6 makes the most sense for someone who wants a compact fitness tracker rather than a full smartwatch. It has built-in GPS for recording outdoor pace and distance without carrying a phone, tracks heart rate, steps, calories, sleep and Active Zone Minutes, and offers more than 40 exercise modes. Google Maps directions and Google Wallet are useful additions for people already using Google services. Google lists water resistance to 50 meters.
Some coaching, readiness, stress and workout content requires Google Health Premium. The product page also advertises a three-month Premium trial, but treat that as a subscription offer, not a permanently free feature: check eligibility, renewal price and cancellation terms at checkout before enrolling. Google Store showed the thermostat at $279.99 in the August 16, 2026 snapshot, with no markdown confirmed. An earlier April 9, 2025 roundup reported $239.99—about $40 below the current list price in the later snapshot. That older price is historical context, not an available offer or a promise it will return. If your existing thermostat works and price is the main concern, waiting for a verified discount is reasonable; if you need an upgrade now and the features suit your home, the list price may still be acceptable.
The 4th-generation model has a 3.9-inch-diameter body, a 600 × 600-pixel circular LCD and support for many 24-volt gas, electric, oil, forced-air, heat-pump and radiant systems. It includes one Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen), trim and steel plates, screws and wiring labels. Google says as many as six temperature sensors can be used per thermostat. Compatibility checklist
- Check your system, not just the thermostat wires. Google supports many 24V systems, but not every residential HVAC configuration. Proprietary systems, dual-transformer setups and some zoned or specialized equipment may be incompatible or need professional assessment. Use Google’s compatibility guidance before ordering.
- Do not assume every heat pump or accessory setup will work. Confirm the exact wiring and supported stages, including auxiliary or emergency heat. Humidifiers, dehumidifiers and ventilation equipment are supported only within specified wiring limits.
- A C wire is usually not required, but it is not guaranteed to be unnecessary. Google says a C wire or Nest Power Connector may be needed in limited cases. Check the wiring and compatibility guidance rather than relying on a blanket “no C wire” claim.
- Account for zones and installation. Multi-zone homes commonly need a thermostat for each zone, and uncertain wiring or complex equipment may call for professional installation. Get a local quote before treating a discount as savings.
- Check local rebates separately. The thermostat is ENERGY STAR certified and may qualify for utility incentives, but eligibility depends on location and energy provider. Do not subtract a rebate until your provider confirms it.
Buy at list price if compatibility is confirmed and you value its display, room-temperature sensing, and Google Home/Matter integration now. Wait if the current thermostat is adequate and price matters more than an immediate upgrade. The prior $239.99 listing is a useful historical reference, not a forecast or a guaranteed target.
