Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 introduced a notable design shift: the display stayed circular, but the case around it became a rounded-square cushion shape. That “squircle” silhouette brought the rugged Galaxy Watch Ultra’s visual language to the mainstream line while supporting a thinner body, revised band geometry, and closer sensor contact.
The Galaxy Watch8 is no longer Samsung’s newest mainstream watch—the Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 arrived in 2026—but the Watch8 redesign remains important. It established the design direction buyers now need to understand.
What is a squircle Galaxy Watch?
“Squircle” is editorial shorthand, not Samsung’s universal product name. Samsung’s own language is closer to cushion design.
The distinction matters: Samsung did not replace the round Galaxy Watch display with a square one. The screen remains circular. The outer case is a rounded-square or cushion-shaped frame surrounding that display.

The result sits between a traditional round watch and a rectangular smartwatch such as an Apple Watch. It gives the watch a more substantial, modern outline without abandoning Samsung’s circular watch faces.
The shape first became prominent on the Galaxy Watch Ultra. In 2025, Samsung expanded that visual approach to the regular Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Watch8 Classic.

The Watch8 family became generally available in the United States on July 25, 2025. Samsung’s current 2026 generation became generally available in the U.S. on August 7, 2026.

Why did Samsung change the case shape?
The squircle is doing more than making product photos look different. Samsung appears to be combining three goals: lineup identity, improved wearability, and a more deliberate relationship between the case, band, and rear sensors.
1. It brings Ultra styling to cheaper models
The Ultra’s squared-off silhouette gave Samsung a stronger visual identity than the company’s previous succession of conventional round watches. Applying a related cushion shape to the Watch8 made the regular models look more connected to Samsung’s premium range.

That creates clearer product family recognition. A Galaxy Watch8 no longer looks like an isolated round Wear OS watch; it looks like part of the same design system as the Ultra.
2. It supports a thinner construction
Samsung’s technical documentation lists the standard Watch8 at 8.6mm thick, compared with 9.7mm for the Watch7 models listed in the same document. A thinner profile can make the watch less likely to catch on shirt cuffs and may make overnight wear easier.

Thickness alone does not guarantee comfort. Wrist size, case diameter, strap tension, watch weight, and the position of the lugs all matter. Still, the thinner body is a more meaningful change than the shape alone.
3. It changes how the watch meets the wrist
The Watch8 introduced revised band and lug geometry. Samsung says the updated structure is intended to improve wearability and sensor contact, with the rear module sitting more closely and consistently against the skin.
That could help the watch stay flatter on the wrist and reduce movement during sleep or exercise. It should not be translated into a claim that the squircle automatically makes heart-rate, sleep, or other readings more accurate. Actual accuracy improvements require independent testing.

4. It gives Samsung more room to work with
A rounded-square outer body can provide additional internal volume around a circular screen. That does not mean every millimeter becomes useful battery or sensor space, but the shape gives Samsung more freedom than a perfectly circular shell while preserving round watch faces.

What improves in everyday use?
A thinner, potentially flatter fit
The Watch8’s slimmer body and revised attachment points may make it feel less bulky, particularly under sleeves or during sleep. One hands-on report described the watch as notably thin and comfortable, but that remains an individual experience rather than a universal measurement.
A more distinctive silhouette
Traditional round smartwatches can look interchangeable from a distance. The cushion frame makes Samsung’s watches easier to distinguish and gives the standard model some of the visual confidence of the Ultra.
A better-defined Classic option
The Watch8 Classic uses the same broad cushion design but adds a physical rotating bezel. That combination makes more sense for buyers who want a conventional watch appearance and tactile navigation rather than a screen surrounded only by touch controls.
What are the drawbacks?
The circular screen and square case do not suit everyone
A round display inside a squarer frame creates a visible transition between the screen and the outer case. Some people will see that as distinctive; others will find it less coherent than either a fully round watch or a fully rectangular smartwatch.

The corners also do not create the same visual continuity as a traditional circular bezel. That is a matter of design preference, not proof that the watch is less durable. There is no basis for declaring the case objectively weaker without controlled durability testing.
Band compatibility needs checking
The revised lug arrangement can complicate band reuse. Owners of older Galaxy Watches should not assume that every existing strap will transfer cleanly to a Watch8 or newer model. Confirm compatibility for the exact case and attachment system, or budget for a Samsung-compatible replacement band or adapter.
The design came with a higher launch price
In the U.S., the Watch8 launched at $349.99 for the 40mm Bluetooth model and $379.99 for the 44mm Bluetooth model. The Watch8 Classic started at $499.99. Those were launch MSRPs; discounts, trade-ins, and carrier promotions can change the value considerably.

Regional configurations can differ, especially for LTE models and bundled offers. The Classic is not simply a larger Watch8: it uses a more premium material, doubles storage, includes the physical bezel, and has a larger battery, but it is also heavier and more expensive.
The redesign arrived with broader software and health changes
The Watch8 generation also introduced or emphasized Wear OS 6, One UI 8 Watch, Google Gemini integration, Running Coach, Bedtime Guidance, Vascular Load, Antioxidant Index, sleep apnea detection, and other health-tracking features. Samsung’s technical material also lists the Exynos W1000 platform, 2GB of RAM, up to 3,000-nit brightness, and larger batteries.

These features should not be confused with medical diagnosis. Wellness tools such as Antioxidant Index and Vascular Load are consumer health insights, not substitutes for clinical blood tests or professional care. Availability can depend on country, regulatory clearance, phone model, and Samsung Health software.
Phone compatibility matters too. The most complete Galaxy Watch experience is tied to Samsung’s Android ecosystem and Galaxy phones. LTE models also require carrier support and may add a monthly line charge.
2026 update: Watch9 and Ultra2 are now current
Samsung highlights the Snapdragon Wear Elite platform, a larger smartwatch battery, a brighter display, comfort, and expanded health tracking for the current generation. Samsung’s announcement does not formally call the Watch9 case a “squircle,” so it is more accurate to describe the design language as visually continuing the Watch8 and Ultra-inspired direction.

That makes the Watch8 story a design retrospective rather than a recommendation to treat the Watch8 as Samsung’s newest watch. Buyers seeking the current mainstream model should start with the Watch9. The Ultra2 is aimed at people who want the largest, most rugged option and are willing to pay for it.
Which model should you buy?
- Choose the Galaxy Watch9 if you want the current mainstream Samsung watch in a 40mm or 44mm size and like the cushion-style design.
- Choose the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 if you prioritize outdoor use, rugged construction, a larger case, and a bigger battery, and can accept its $699.99 starting price and 47mm size.
- Choose the Galaxy Watch8 if a discounted unit offers the thinner design and Samsung health ecosystem at a meaningfully lower price than the Watch9.
- Choose the Watch8 Classic if the physical rotating bezel and traditional styling matter more than having the newest platform.
- Consider an older Watch7 or another brand if price, legacy band reuse, or battery life matters more than Samsung’s newest design direction.
Buyers with small wrists should compare case diameter and weight rather than choosing solely by the screen size. Buyers who need multi-day endurance may be better served by a Garmin Forerunner or a larger Ultra-style watch. iPhone owners should not treat a Galaxy Watch as a default purchase; Apple Watch is the more natural ecosystem match.
The verdict
Samsung did not simply make a round watch look square. With the Watch8, it used the Ultra’s visual language to unify the lineup while trying to make the standard model thinner, flatter, and easier to wear.
The squircle is therefore a meaningful industrial-design experiment, but it is not by itself a reason to upgrade. The strongest case for it is the combination of slimmer construction, revised fit, distinctive styling, and—on the Classic—the physical rotating bezel. The weakest case is for buyers who want a perfectly traditional round watch, depend on old bands, or expect a new case outline to guarantee more accurate health measurements.
In 2026, the Galaxy Watch9 is the current mainstream choice and the Ultra2 is the premium option. The Watch8’s squircle energy matters because it appears to have become the foundation of Samsung’s newer Galaxy Watch identity—not because every buyer will prefer the shape.
