Yes—the Galaxy Watch4/Nike Run Club problem was real, but it was primarily an app-support and Wear OS 3 compatibility issue, not proof that the watch hardware cannot run fitness apps. Reports began in December 2021, when owners said NRC disappeared after an update. Nike still refers broadly to “Wear OS watches,” yet its public help pages do not specifically confirm reliable, standalone Galaxy Watch4 support in every country or software configuration.
What happened to Nike Run Club on the Galaxy Watch4?
The key public record is a Google Wear OS community thread opened on December 11, 2021. Galaxy Watch4 owners reported that NRC had initially been available, then vanished after an early watch or app update. Follow-up replies in January 2022 commonly attributed the problem to NRC not being ready for Wear OS 3. Those replies are community observations, not an official diagnosis from Google, Samsung, or Nike.
The Watch4 launched on Wear OS powered by Samsung, and Samsung provides development support for Watch4-series Wear OS devices. That makes “Wear OS cannot run NRC” too broad. The more accurate explanation is that Nike had to distribute and maintain a compatible watch application for that particular Wear OS generation and device configuration.
Separate the five different failures
“NRC does not work” can describe several different points in the data path:

- Disappeared app: It was present initially but vanished after an update.
- Recording failure: The app opens but a run stalls, stops, or records incomplete distance.
- Upload failure: A run exists on the watch but never reaches the NRC Activity tab.
- Phone dependence: NRC works only while the phone remains connected.
These are not interchangeable. The chain is:
Watch app availability → run recording → watch-to-phone upload → NRC account sync → optional Samsung Health or Health Connect sharing.
A failure at any stage produces a different symptom. User reports describe both disappearing apps and incomplete or unsynchronised runs, but they do not establish a universal current defect.
Was Samsung, Google, or Nike responsible?
No public source in this evidence establishes an official allocation of blame. The timing strongly suggests a compatibility problem around the Wear OS 3 transition:

- Nike: Community replies most often pointed to NRC needing appropriate Wear OS 3 support and distribution. No official Nike statement found here assigns a root cause.
Claims about a Nike-Samsung contractual dispute are unverified and should not be treated as fact. Nor is there evidence that Samsung deliberately “removed” NRC or that this was a confirmed Google Wear OS bug.

What Nike says now
Nike’s current help pages refer to “Wear OS watches,” explain watch-side NRC settings, and say a run made away from the phone can sync after the watch reconnects. Nike also recommends refreshing the Activity tab and managing integrations under Profile → Settings → Partners:
Nike says partner availability varies by location. Generic Wear OS wording does not prove that NRC is installable on every Galaxy Watch4 model, works offline on every Bluetooth or LTE variant, or supports every feature—GPS, heart rate, guided audio and training plans—identically. Check the watch’s own Play Store and your regional Nike support pages before relying on it.
Galaxy Watch4 troubleshooting checklist
- Check availability: Confirm NRC is installed on the phone and actually listed in the watch’s Play Store. If it is absent, this is an availability issue, not a sync setting.
- Update the whole chain: Install current versions of NRC, Galaxy Wearable, watch software, Google Play services, Google Play Store and Samsung Health if you use it. Version numbers change, so use the latest offered to your devices.
- Verify accounts and permissions: Sign into the same Nike account on both devices. Allow location, activity, heart-rate and background permissions as applicable, and check that battery optimization is not suspending NRC.
- Test recording: Start a short outdoor run and note whether GPS, distance and heart rate record. LTE does not create support for a missing or incompatible app.
- Reconnect and refresh: Reconnect the watch to the phone, open NRC’s Activity tab and swipe down to refresh. Nike says an offline watch run may upload after reconnection, but that does not guarantee every Watch4 build can queue one.
- Reconnect partners: In NRC, open Profile → Settings → Partners. Disconnect and reconnect the relevant service, then review privacy permissions in that partner app.
- Reinstall carefully: Wait for any pending run to sync and check Samsung Health first. Reinstall the phone app, and reinstall the watch app only if Nike officially offers it for your watch. A factory reset cannot restore an app Nike no longer distributes and may erase local watch data.
If the app is unavailable in the watch store, stop treating repeated resets or unofficial sideloading as a permanent fix. Sideloaded builds can break after updates, fail login or syncing, and are not official compatibility support.
Samsung Health and Health Connect are not NRC
Samsung says Samsung Health can synchronize with Health Connect from version 6.22.5, released in October 2022. Its documentation also notes that Health Connect does not directly support Wear OS devices; the phone-side Samsung Health app is part of the path (Samsung FAQ).

Recording a run in Samsung Health can preserve the workout in Samsung’s ecosystem. Health Connect may let compatible Android apps exchange health data. Neither statement guarantees that a Samsung-recorded workout will become a complete NRC activity with Nike maps, training-plan credit or guided-run metadata. Nike separately requires partner-device activities to sync to their native app, and partner availability varies by region.

Nike’s November 13, 2024 announcement specifically highlighted Apple, Garmin and COROS watches and uploading activities to Strava (Nike newsroom). That is stronger evidence for those ecosystems than for Galaxy Watch4-specific support, although exact model and regional behavior still needs checking.
Before buying another watch
Existing Watch4 owners should first try Nike’s official reconnect and refresh steps, then use Samsung Health if the immediate goal is dependable recording. Buy a Garmin or COROS only if phone-free running, battery life and running-specific metrics matter more than retaining the Samsung setup. Do not buy—or avoid—a device solely because a forum post says NRC works on it; verify the exact model, country, phone combination and current app listing.
The Watch4 and Watch4 Classic share the relevant Wear OS family, but app visibility can still vary by model, region, account and software build. A phone’s brand can matter too, and duplicate recording in Samsung Health and NRC may create duplicate activities elsewhere.
Current-status bottom line
The documented problem surfaced in late 2021 and early 2022, not as a newly verified August 2026 outage. Nike’s generic Wear OS language means support may exist in some configurations, but it is not device-specific confirmation for every Galaxy Watch4. If NRC is missing from your watch’s Play Store, the practical explanation is unsupported or unavailable watch-side distribution—not defective Galaxy Watch4 hardware. Use phone-based NRC, Samsung Health, or a currently confirmed running-watch ecosystem according to the feature you value most.
