No—the iOS 18.1 beta screenshot that appeared to show an Apple Watch with almost no bezels was not a leaked image of the Apple Watch Series 10. The available evidence points to a rendering bug: the watch body and watch face were composited separately, making existing Apple Watch Series 9 artwork look like a thinner, larger-screen model.
Apple later announced the Series 10 with a genuinely thinner case and larger display, but that coincidence does not turn the beta screenshot into an authentic product leak.
The screenshot that started the rumor
In early September 2024, an image attributed to the X account Majin Bu circulated online. It appeared to show an Apple Watch pairing or setup screen in an iOS 18.1 beta. The watch face extended unusually close to the case edges, creating the impression of extremely thin bezels.

Apple was expected to unveil its next-generation watch at its September event, and existing rumors pointed to a slimmer design with a larger display. Because the image appeared inside a genuine Apple setup interface rather than as a fan-made concept, many readers interpreted it as an accidental preview of the Series 10.

But a real screenshot is not automatically a real hardware leak.
9to5Mac reported that it inspected internal assets from the iOS 18.0 and iOS 18.1 betas and found no images of an unreleased Apple Watch model.
Why the image was misleading
The explanation was a compositing problem in the setup screen. The watch casing and the watch-face artwork were rendered as separate elements. When those layers aligned incorrectly, the face appeared much larger than it should have been and seemed to reach almost to the edge of the case.

The result resembled the rumored Series 10 design even though it was not a hidden Series 10 product render.
This distinction matters:
- The screenshot may have been genuine: it could have been captured from an iOS beta setup flow.
- The Series 10 interpretation was unsupported: the image did not establish that the watch shown was an unreleased model.
- The reported source was existing artwork: the apparent thin bezels came from separate layers being rendered incorrectly.
That explanation comes from 9to5Mac’s inspection and reporting, not from an Apple-issued postmortem or source-code-level confirmation. The responsible conclusion is therefore that the available evidence did not support a Series 10 leak.
Why the fake leak looked plausible
The screenshot matched several expectations that were already circulating about Apple’s next watch:

- Possible changes to case sizing.
Pre-announcement speculation even mentioned replacing the 41mm model with a 45mm version and adding a 49mm option. Those claims were rumors, not verified specifications. The image’s near-edge-to-edge watch face appeared to reinforce them.
There was also a technical reason for the confusion. Most viewers cannot tell whether a product image was rendered as one complete object or assembled from independent layers. A misaligned face on a familiar watch body can therefore look like a new physical design.
The broader lesson is useful for interpreting beta software: a screenshot can be authentic while the conclusion drawn from it is wrong. Beta assets may include artwork for existing products, placeholders, or interface elements that do not correspond to hardware launching alongside the software.
What the Apple Watch Series 10 actually looked like
Apple announced the Apple Watch Series 10 on September 9, 2024, and made it available on September 20. The final product did introduce the design changes that made the screenshot seem believable, but it was not the watch depicted by that rendering error.
According to Apple’s announcement, the Series 10 came in 42mm and 46mm case sizes. Apple described it as nearly 10 percent thinner than the Apple Watch Series 7, Series 8, and Series 9.

The Series 10 also offered up to 9 percent more active screen area than those three earlier models. Its design featured more rounded corners and a wider aspect ratio, while the display used wide-angle OLED technology. Apple said the display could be up to 40 percent brighter at an angle than the Series 9 display.

Apple’s official specifications establish what the Series 10 was. They do not authenticate the earlier beta screenshot.

Why the later Series 10 announcement does not validate the leak
The Series 10 really was thinner and had a larger display, so it is tempting to treat the beta image as an early reveal. That would confuse a correct rumor with correct evidence.
Rumors about a slimmer Apple Watch and larger screens existed independently of the screenshot. A distorted Series 9 asset could resemble the direction Apple ultimately took without having any direct connection to the final product. The relevant question is not whether the final watch shared visual traits with the image; it is whether the beta image actually represented the unreleased hardware.

The bottom line
The iOS 18.1 beta did not leak the Apple Watch Series 10 design. The viral setup screenshot appears to have been a rendering error involving Apple Watch Series 9 assets. The Series 10 later launched with a thinner body, larger display, 42mm and 46mm case sizes, and other confirmed design changes—but those similarities do not retroactively make the screenshot a genuine leak.
