Verdict: The Nokia Steel HR is still usable in 2026, but it is no longer a sensible all-purpose smartwatch purchase. It remains appealing as a discreet, watch-shaped fitness tracker with excellent battery life when its battery is healthy. Buy one only if you find a clean, fully tested used or refurbished unit at a low price. If you want current hardware, warranty coverage, richer health data, or dependable sports tracking, the Withings ScanWatch Light is the closer modern replacement, while the ScanWatch 2 is the more capable upgrade.
The Steel HR is a genuine hybrid smartwatch: conventional analog hands and a progress subdial sit above a small OLED display. It tracks steps, distance, calories, sleep, swimming and heart-rate trends, and can show limited phone notifications. But it has no GPS, app ecosystem, touchscreen, payments, music, maps or serious training tools. Think of it as a wellness tracker that looks like a traditional watch—not an Apple Watch or Garmin alternative.
Quick verdict
| Best for | Not for |
|---|---|
| Classic-watch enthusiasts, casual activity tracking, discreet notifications and long battery life | Serious athletes, GPS users, buyers needing current warranty support or advanced health features |
- Current status: Legacy hardware; production of the original Steel HR stopped.
- Official battery claim: Up to 25 days, plus up to 20 additional days in power-reserve mode.
- Biggest strength: Traditional design combined with unusually infrequent charging.
- Biggest weakness: Age-related battery, seal and compatibility risk on the used market.
- Closest current alternative: Withings ScanWatch Light.
What is the Nokia Steel HR?
The Nokia Steel HR is the Nokia-branded version of the Withings Steel HR family. The Nokia name comes from the period when Nokia owned Withings’ health-device business; later products returned to the Withings name. In practical buying terms, the logo matters less than the exact model, size, condition, charger and ability to pair with the current Withings app.
It is a hybrid smartwatch rather than a full smartwatch. The analog hour and minute hands show the time, while a lower subdial indicates progress toward a daily activity goal. Pressing the physical button cycles through information on the small OLED display, including activity and heart-rate data. Detailed history, configuration and trends live in the phone app.

Withings support still documents the Steel HR family, but that should not be confused with current production. Withings has stated that production of the original Steel HR stopped, with remaining units continuing only while stock lasted. In 2026, a Nokia-branded example is most likely old stock, used stock, refurbished stock or marketplace inventory.
Design, sizes and comfort
The conventional appearance is the Steel HR’s strongest argument. From a distance it looks like a simple analog watch, and the small screen is deliberately restrained. You can receive a discreet alert or check a metric without having a bright touchscreen competing for attention all day.
| Model | Diameter | Thickness | Weight | Band width | Glass |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steel HR 36 mm | 36.3 mm | 13 mm | 39 g | 18 mm | Mineral |
| Steel HR 40 mm | 39.5 mm | 13 mm | 49 g | 20 mm | Mineral |
These specifications come from the Steel HR user guide. The 36-mm version is the more natural choice for smaller wrists or anyone who prefers a compact watch. The 40-mm model has a more substantial presence but is also heavier. At 13 mm thick, neither is especially slim by traditional-watch standards.

Inspect a used watch under strong light for deep scratches, cracks and screen damage. Old silicone bands can become brittle, sticky, discolored or stretched, and bands and chargers may vary by size and edition.
What does the Steel HR track?
According to Withings’ support documentation, the watch can track:
- Steps, distance and calorie estimates
- Walking and running
- Swimming
- Heart rate
- Sleep duration, interruptions, and estimated light and deep sleep cycles
- Silent alarms
- A timer
- Call, text, calendar and selected app notifications
It does not track elevation or SpO2. It also lacks ECG, onboard GPS, maps, contactless payments, music storage and the richer sensor suite found in newer hybrid watches. The complete supported-metrics list is in Withings’ Steel HR tracking guide.
Heart-rate monitoring
The optical sensor uses green LEDs. Heart rate is measured every 10 minutes by default and continuously during activities. That is useful for broad resting and exercise trends, but not a reason to buy the watch as a medical or accuracy-focused training device.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Reviews have also disagreed: Wareable reported a surprisingly good heart-rate experience, while Macworld criticized broader fitness-tracking accuracy. The fairest conclusion is that the Steel HR is good enough for casual trend tracking, but not a compelling choice for athletes who require dependable data. Use a chest strap or clinical device when accuracy matters, and do not use the watch for medical decisions.
Sleep tracking
The watch reports sleep duration, time to fall asleep, wake-ups or interruptions, and estimated light and deep sleep cycles. Its Smart Wake-Up alarm can use vibration to wake you quietly.

- MILITARY STANDARD TOUGHNESS (MIL-STD-810H TESTED): Stainless steel bezel and Corning Gorilla Glass shrug off drops, dust and mud, while 5ATM and IP69K sealing keep it swim-ready and safe under high-pressure water jets - from the pool to the jobsite.
- ANSWER AND MAKE CALLS FROM YOUR WRIST: Built-in speaker and microphone for Bluetooth calling, plus call, text and app notifications - a rugged smart watch compatible with Android phones and iPhone.
- DUAL-FREQUENCY GPS (L1+L5): Track routes phone-free with 6 satellite systems for pinpoint precision in remote terrain; compass, altimeter and barometer keep you oriented off-grid when hiking, hunting or working in the field.
- SUNLIGHT-READABLE 1.96 inch AMOLED, 25-DAY BATTERY: 1000-nit display stays crisp in direct sun; stop charging every night - up to 25 days per charge (basic watch mode), full recharge in about 2 hours on the magnetic charger.
- COMPLETE BUNDLE IN THE BOX: Carbinox Edge watch, magnetic USB charging cable, tempered glass screen protector, a metal band and a 6-pack of quick-release bands - 160 sports modes with heart rate, SpO2 and sleep tracking.
This is useful as a basic overnight summary, but the sleep analysis is not comparable with newer devices’ broader health and sleep tools. Light and deep sleep are estimates, not clinical sleep staging. Contemporary reviews found the information helpful but basic and noted inconsistencies in sleep classification.
Activity and workout tracking
The Steel HR is strongest as a daily wellness tracker. It can count steps, estimate distance and calories, and record basic running and swimming activity. Some activity recognition is automatic or semi-automatic, with more information available in the app.
Recommended Free Tools
The limitations become obvious during structured exercise. There is no onboard GPS, so route and location information require the phone where supported. The watch cannot provide the detailed, glanceable workout display of a sports watch, and automatic recognition can misclassify movement. Macworld even reported occasions where part of a shower was treated as swimming.
For walks, general movement and occasional workouts, it can be adequate. For serious running, cycling, swimming or training analysis, it is the wrong category of device.
Notifications and smart features
The watch can vibrate and display limited information for calls, texts, calendar events and selected app notifications. It does not provide a rich message interface, meaningful replies or an app ecosystem. Third-party notification behavior may depend on app permissions, operating-system behavior, Bluetooth connectivity and the current Withings app.
This low-information approach is part of the appeal for people who want fewer distractions. It is also the reason the word “smartwatch” needs qualification: the Steel HR can alert you to a phone event, but it does not replace your phone.

Battery life and charging
Nokia and Withings advertised up to 25 days of normal battery life, followed by up to 20 additional days in power-reserve mode. Withings says power reserve preserves time and activity tracking but disables heart-rate functionality until the watch is recharged. A full charge was specified at approximately two hours. See the official battery guidance for the operating modes.
That was an impressive specification when the watch was new. It is not a guarantee for a secondhand Nokia unit. Battery capacity declines with age, storage history, temperature and charging behavior. A marketplace listing repeating “25 days” may simply be quoting the original specification.

- Fits for Nokia Withings Steel HR 36mm/40mm.
- Stable charging performance, long service life.
- This product does not heat up, can ensure the safety of the users.
- Faster transfer speed, saving time and effort.
- Compact and lightweight, fits easily in your pocket.
Ask the seller how long the watch lasts under actual use, whether it reaches a stable full charge and whether continuous heart-rate monitoring or notifications are enabled. If the watch drains in a day or two despite modest use, software adjustments will not restore the original capacity.
Water resistance and durability
The original rating is 5 ATM, or pressure equivalent to 50 meters. Withings says the watch can be used for splashing, dishwashing and swimming, but not diving or snorkeling. Do not press the button underwater. Rinse off salt water, and avoid saunas, steam rooms, chemicals and detergents. The relevant water-resistance guidance also covers condensation and care.

Do not treat a used watch as permanently swim-safe merely because it originally carried a 5 ATM rating. Seals can deteriorate, impacts can compromise the case and previous repairs may have affected water resistance. Condensation inside the case is a major warning sign: stop wearing the watch in water and contact support rather than assuming it will dry safely.
App compatibility and setup in 2026
Current Withings support lists iOS 16 or later and Android 12 or later for the Steel HR. Older manuals listed much earlier operating systems, but those figures describe launch-era compatibility and should not be used as the current requirement. Verify your exact phone before buying, especially if you use an older handset.
Basic setup is:
- Install the current Withings app from your phone’s official app store.
- Create or sign in to a Withings account.
- Charge the watch and enable Bluetooth.
- Use the app’s device-add flow rather than pairing only through the phone’s generic Bluetooth menu.
- Grant the Bluetooth, notification and, where relevant, location permissions requested by the app.
- Allow the watch to synchronize fully before judging missing history.
- Install any app or firmware update offered during setup.
App labels can change, so follow the current in-app instructions. The fact that the watch remains listed in support documentation means it can still work with supported phones; it does not promise indefinite compatibility or continued production.
Common problems and practical fixes
The watch will not pair
- Charge it fully.
- Force-close and reopen the Withings app.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on, then restart the phone.
- Confirm the phone meets the current iOS or Android requirement.
- Remove stale device entries only as directed by the app.
- Try setup again through the Withings app.
- Contact Withings support if the watch cannot be discovered or remains linked to another account.
A reset may help, but it cannot fix a failed battery, damaged Bluetooth hardware or another physical fault.
Heart-rate readings are missing or implausible
Wear the watch snugly above the wrist bone, clean the sensor and skin, and keep still for a spot reading. Compare trends with a manual pulse count or another device. Do not interpret an unusual reading as a diagnosis.
Notifications do not arrive
Check notification permissions in both the Withings app and the phone, confirm the Bluetooth connection, review background-app restrictions and re-enable the specific app notification. Even when functioning correctly, the watch will show less information than a full smartwatch.

Battery life is poor
Reduce notifications, disable continuous heart-rate monitoring if unnecessary and check whether repeated Bluetooth disconnections are keeping the watch active. Try the correct known-good charging arrangement. If the battery is degraded, settings cannot restore its lost capacity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before buying used
Because the Steel HR is legacy hardware, condition matters more than the Nokia logo or the seller’s claim that it is “like new.” Before the return period ends, check:
- Exact case size: 36 mm or 40 mm
- Nokia or Withings branding and the precise model
- Battery behavior after a full charge
- Charging contacts, dock and included charger
- OLED brightness, dead pixels and burn-in
- Correct analog-hand alignment
- Physical button operation
- Vibration and silent alarm operation
- Heart-rate readings and app synchronization
- Bluetooth pairing with your own phone
- Cracks, deep scratches, corrosion or condensation
- Band condition and replacement-band compatibility
- Seller return policy
- Whether the device is still linked to another account and can be reset
For an old unit, treat swimming as optional rather than assumed. A watch that pairs and tracks steps may still have compromised seals.
Nokia Steel HR versus current Withings alternatives
Withings ScanWatch Light
The ScanWatch Light is the closest current replacement for the Steel HR’s classic-watch concept. Withings’ US page lists a 37-mm case, Gorilla Glass, 5 ATM water resistance, sleep tracking, 24/7 heart-rate tracking, app notifications and up to 35 days of battery life. The observed official US price was $249.95, but prices and promotions can change.
It is the better choice when a used Steel HR approaches the cost of a new current hybrid. You get newer hardware, a current purchase channel and warranty/return advantages. Choose the Steel HR instead only when the used price is substantially lower and the unit passes inspection—or when you specifically want the Nokia branding or a 36-mm model.
Withings ScanWatch 2
The ScanWatch 2 is the premium option. Its sapphire glass, longer battery claim and expanded heart-health features make it more suitable for buyers who plan to keep a hybrid watch for years. Withings’ observed US price was $369.95. Features and availability can vary by region and software.

Who should buy the Nokia Steel HR?
- Someone who wants a traditional watch design and very little screen time.
- A casual walker or general wellness user who values basic trends over precision.
- A buyer who dislikes daily charging and finds a clean, tested unit at a bargain price.
- An existing Withings user looking for a simple backup watch.
Who should skip it?
- Runners, cyclists, swimmers and athletes who need serious training data.
- Anyone requiring GPS, detailed workout metrics, route tracking or structured training tools.
- Users seeking ECG, SpO2, temperature features or richer sleep analysis.
- People who need detailed message replies, apps, music, maps or payments.
- Buyers unwilling to accept used-device battery and water-resistance uncertainty.
- Anyone who needs a current manufacturer warranty.
Final verdict
The Nokia Steel HR still makes sense only as a low-cost, low-distraction hybrid watch. Its analog design, silent alerts and potentially weeks-long battery life remain distinctive, and current Withings software support means a compatible phone can still make it useful.
But it is old hardware, not a current smartwatch. The official battery figure applies to a healthy unit under specified conditions, not necessarily to a years-old marketplace watch. Its health measurements are for general wellness, its sleep data is basic, its swimming capability depends on seal condition, and its notifications are intentionally limited.
Buy a tested Nokia Steel HR cheaply if you specifically want its classic design and simple tracking. Otherwise, choose the ScanWatch Light for the closest current replacement or the ScanWatch 2 for a more premium long-term purchase.
