Verdict: Oakley Meta HSTN improves the Ray-Ban Meta formula with a higher-resolution camera, longer claimed battery life, a larger charging case, and a more performance-oriented frame. But it is still a phone-dependent camera and audio wearable—not AR glasses with a display, and not a replacement for your phone.
Buy the Oakley Meta HSTN if you want hands-free POV capture, open-ear audio, Oakley’s lens options, and better endurance than earlier Meta glasses. Choose Ray-Ban Meta for a lower historical entry price and more conventional styling; choose Oakley Meta Vanguard if serious sports use justifies its more specialized design and higher price.

Oakley Meta HSTN is a pair of sunglasses with a camera, open-ear speakers, microphones, touch and voice controls, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Meta AI access through the Meta AI app. It has no display, heads-up navigation, or conventional augmented-reality overlay. Oakley’s official product page lists the phone, app, account, internet, and USB-C charging requirements.

The important distinction is that Oakley’s upgrades are mainly hardware and fit-related. Meta AI, live translation, Live AI, open-ear audio, voice capture, touch controls, and AI editing should not be treated as Oakley-exclusive advantages.
Design, fit, and lens choices
The HSTN is wider and more performance-oriented than the familiar Ray-Ban styles. Oakley lists it as a wide, high-bridge-fit frame made from O Matter, with Unobtainium nosepads intended to improve grip. Lens choices include clear, Prizm, polarized, Transitions, and prescription configurations.
Fit is the most subjective part of this review. Engadget found the tested white-and-gold version oversized and visually awkward for the reviewer’s face, particularly because of its thick frame and wide nosepiece. That is not a universal defect: the HSTN’s appearance and comfort will depend heavily on face shape, bridge height, lens prescription, and chosen colorway.

Before buying, check whether the bridge sits securely, whether the temples create pressure after several hours, and whether the frame interferes with a helmet, hat, or peripheral vision. Prescription lenses can add weight and materially increase the configured price. Dark or polarized lenses may be excellent outside but inconvenient indoors; clear or Transitions options create a more flexible everyday pair, usually at a higher cost.
Camera quality: useful, but not a phone replacement
The 12MP camera is the clearest reason to choose Oakley Meta HSTN over earlier Meta glasses. It can capture hands-free photos and video from your point of view, and the broad 100-degree field of view is useful for cycling, hiking, travel, family moments, and short social clips. Video can reach up to 3K, although Engadget noted that the higher-resolution mode was not the default setting.
The camera is best understood as a convenience camera. A phone remains better for deliberate composition, low-light work, fast action, exposure control, and maximum image quality. The wide angle also takes practice: hair, hats, helmet visors, and straps can intrude into the frame. Engadget found still images somewhat oversaturated in overcast conditions.

Inspect your first few clips for:
- Obstructions from hair, hats, helmets, or straps.
- The camera’s angle relative to where you naturally look.
- Exposure and color in bright and overcast conditions.
- Wind noise during walking, cycling, or running.
- Whether the recording indicator remains visible and unobstructed.
Oakley lists image acquisition up to 3024 × 4032 and video acquisition up to 2203 × 2938 at 30fps. These are acquisition specifications, not a promise that every recording mode, platform export, or social service will preserve the same quality.

Two open-ear speakers handle music, podcasts, navigation prompts, calls, notifications, and Meta AI responses. Engadget found the sound relatively contained at lower volumes, but nearby people could hear it more clearly at higher levels.
That makes the glasses useful for walking, commuting, and light activity without blocking your ears. They are less suitable when you want immersion, isolation, or high-fidelity music. Wind, traffic, and cycling speed can reduce clarity, and important calls may still be better handled on a phone. Open-ear audio is not hearing protection.
A physical capture control, touchpad, microphones, and voice commands provide several ways to operate the glasses. The five-microphone array helps with calls and voice interaction, but no microphone arrangement can eliminate wind and crowd noise in difficult conditions.

Engadget recorded slightly more than five hours of continuous music playback, approximately an hour longer than its Ray-Ban comparison. Actual battery life varies with recording, volume, calls, AI queries, temperature, connectivity, and network conditions.

Meta AI, Live AI, and translation
Meta AI is most useful as a lightweight convenience layer. You can ask questions, interact by voice, and use the camera context for simple assistance without reaching for your phone. It is not a reason by itself to buy Oakley HSTN, because much of the same software is available on other Meta glasses.
Live translation
Engadget tested English-Spanish translation with both participants wearing Meta glasses. The feature was broadly effective but required pauses and struggled with missed speech, slang, regional variations, and feedback from translated audio. The review described support for English, Spanish, French, and Italian at that time. Language support and availability depend on country, account, software, and service changes, so verify them for your region.
Live AI
Live AI allows Meta AI to use the glasses’ camera context during a continuing session, reducing the need to say “Hey Meta” before every question. It can identify some plants, objects, landmarks, and surroundings, but Engadget found it inconsistent. It could identify some things, misidentified some plants, and could not provide navigation to a landmark during testing.

Setup and compatibility checklist
- A compatible iPhone running iOS 14.4 or later, or an Android phone running Android 10 or later.
- The Meta AI app.
- A Meta account.
- Wireless internet access through Wi-Fi or cellular service.
- A USB-C charging plug and cable; Oakley says the cable is not included.
- A supported country and language for the features you intend to use.
- Prescription details if ordering prescription lenses.
The HSTN listing also specifies Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 6E, 32GB of flash storage, and capacity estimates of more than 500 photos or more than 100 30-second videos. Compatibility and software behavior can change, so treat these as current product-page specifications rather than permanent guarantees.

Choose Oakley Meta HSTN for general outdoor and everyday use
HSTN is the balanced choice if you want Oakley’s styling and lens ecosystem, hands-free capture, open-ear audio, prescription availability, and improved endurance without buying the most specialized model. Current US listings start at $399, with some lens configurations shown at $479.

Choose Ray-Ban Meta for value and conventional styling
Ray-Ban Meta is the better fit if you prefer slimmer or more familiar styling and do not need Oakley’s sport-oriented frame. Engadget’s July 2025 review cited several Ray-Ban Meta models at $299; treat that as a dated comparison rather than a verified September 2026 price. The broad Meta software platform is not exclusive to Oakley.
Choose Oakley Meta Vanguard for serious sports use
Oakley Meta Vanguard is listed at $499 and is the more purpose-built option for cycling, running, training, and outdoor activity. Oakley claims up to nine hours of daily use, six hours of continuous audio, and 36 additional hours from the case. It adds a centered ultra-wide camera and sport-related Garmin and Strava integrations. The extra $100 is easier to justify if those features matter; casual users may not benefit from the more specialized frame.
Choose ordinary Oakley HSTN for simple sunglasses
Standard Oakley HSTN sunglasses are the rational choice if you mainly want eyewear and do not need a camera, speakers, AI, charging, phone pairing, or a Meta account. Oakley’s listed non-smart HSTN configuration was $196 during the research snapshot.
Privacy and social acceptability
The camera sits above the left eye, while an indicator light above the right eye activates during photo or video capture. Do not cover, disable, or obscure that indicator. It helps signal recording, but it does not make every situation socially or legally acceptable.
Recording rules and venue policies vary. Be especially careful in workplaces, schools, medical settings, gyms, private homes, and events. In close social settings, announce that you are recording or make the recording visibly clear, and check the indicator before capture. These glasses are a poor choice for covert recording or situations where consent is uncertain.

- Oakley fans: Buy if the frame fit, lens choices, and Oakley styling are worth the premium.
- Outdoor users: Buy for quick POV capture and open-ear audio, but account for wind, helmet fit, and battery use.
- Creators: Buy as a fast supplementary camera, not as a replacement for a phone or dedicated camera.
- Travelers: Buy for hands-free memories, calls, audio, and occasional translation, with realistic expectations about AI reliability.
- Prescription wearers: Consider HSTN if the configured lens price and fit work for you; prescription weight and return terms deserve attention.
- Value shoppers: Start with Ray-Ban Meta or ordinary HSTN sunglasses, depending on whether you need smart features at all.
- Privacy-conscious buyers: Choose ordinary HSTN sunglasses instead if a recording camera creates unacceptable friction.
Final verdict
Oakley Meta HSTN is a meaningful refinement, not a revolution. The 12MP camera, up-to-3K video, improved endurance, larger case, and Oakley’s performance-oriented fit make it more capable than the earlier Ray-Ban Meta formula. But the glasses still have the same fundamental boundaries: no display, no standalone operation, imperfect AI, open-ear audio rather than immersive sound, and image quality that trails a phone in demanding situations.
At $399 and above, buy HSTN when its Oakley fit, lens ecosystem, and hands-free outdoor use solve a specific problem. Otherwise, Ray-Ban Meta is the more sensible general-purpose comparison, Vanguard is the better specialist sports option, and ordinary Oakley HSTN is the simplest and cheapest answer.
