Some Apple Watch Siri requests can work without an internet connection, but Siri is not fully offline. On supported hardware, simple requests such as setting a timer or starting a workout can be handled on-device. Requests for current information or connected services—such as weather, web searches, messages, calls, and directions—still need an internet connection through a nearby iPhone, Wi-Fi, or cellular service.
The key distinction is whether your iPhone is nearby or your watch has internet access. A watch can use online Siri without the iPhone nearby if it has usable Wi-Fi or cellular. With no iPhone connection, Wi-Fi, or cellular, only supported local actions are available.
On-device Siri is not the same as completely offline Siri
A Siri request involves more than recognizing your voice: the watch has to interpret the request, decide whether it can perform the action locally, and either carry it out or reach an online service. A timer or workout can be a local action. A weather forecast or web search needs information from outside the watch.
Apple describes on-device Siri on the Apple Watch SE 3 with its S10 chip for requests that do not require internet information, giving starting a workout and setting a timer as examples. That is a specific capability, not a promise that every Apple Watch can run every Siri command without a network. Apple’s general Apple Watch Siri guide says the watch must be connected to the internet to use Siri; read that alongside Apple’s model-specific description of requests processed locally.

Local processing can make supported actions less dependent on a network and may respond faster. It does not mean every request stays on the watch or that all Siri processing is offline.
What Siri can do in each connection state
| Watch connection | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Paired iPhone nearby over Bluetooth | The watch can use its normal connection to the iPhone. This is not a clean test of fully disconnected Siri. |
| Wi-Fi, iPhone absent | Online Siri requests may work over Wi-Fi, if the network and service are available. |
| Cellular watch with an active plan and coverage | Online Siri requests may work over cellular. A cellular-capable watch without an active plan or coverage does not have internet just because it has cellular hardware. |
| No iPhone connection, Wi-Fi, or cellular | Only supported local/on-device requests may work. Which ones depend on the watch model and software. |
| Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi and cellular off | Treat Siri as offline, but remember Bluetooth stays on by default and may still connect the watch to a nearby iPhone. |
| Low Power Mode with iPhone absent | Wi-Fi and cellular data may remain off until you open an app that needs a connection, so connected Siri features can be affected. |
Apple’s guide to using Apple Watch without its paired iPhone distinguishes connected features—including Siri, directions, messages, weather, Home control, Find My, and streaming—from functions available without a network, such as workouts, timers, alarms, downloaded media, activity tracking, Compass, Apple Pay, and many health features.

- “Set a timer for five minutes.”
- “Start an outdoor run” or “Start a workout.”
- “Stop my workout.”
- “Set an alarm for 7 a.m.”
- “Turn on Airplane Mode.”
- “Open the Workout app.”
Apple specifically cites starting a workout and setting a timer as examples of requests that can be handled on-device on Apple Watch SE 3. Queries about heart rate or other health data may also depend on the watch, software, and what data or capability is supported; do not assume every health-related Siri question works offline on every model.
Requests that still need internet
| Try saying | Why it needs a connection |
|---|---|
| “What’s the weather?” or “What’s the forecast tomorrow?” | Needs current online weather data. |
| “Search the web for…” or “What are today’s news headlines?” | Needs current web or news information. |
| “Send a message” or “Call [contact].” | Needs communication service connectivity; a nearby iPhone, Wi-Fi calling, or cellular service may be involved, depending on setup. |
| “Get directions to…” | Needs connected Maps services for online directions and current data. Downloaded offline maps can help with map use, but do not make all Siri directions available offline. |
| “Play this online song or podcast.” | Streaming needs a connection. Content downloaded in advance is a separate offline option. |
| “Turn on my smart lights” or “Find my friend.” | These requests depend on connected services and current network data. |
| “Translate this” or “What time is it in Tokyo?” | Availability depends on the particular language, feature, and whether the request can be answered from local data; online lookup or translation features may need a connection. |
For trips without service, prepare offline alternatives: download music or podcasts, save maps where supported, and set up routes, reminders, and alarms in advance. Apple explains how to use offline maps on Apple Watch; availability varies by region.
Check your watch, software, and feature requirements
For basic on-device Siri: Apple’s explicit example is Apple Watch SE 3 running watchOS 26, powered by the S10 chip. Do not infer support for every older watch just because it can install a given watchOS version.

For newer Apple Intelligence features: These are a separate feature set from basic local commands. Apple’s Apple Intelligence requirements describe watchOS 26 features with compatibility and pairing requirements that vary by feature; a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone may be needed. Some features, such as Workout Buddy, Live Translation in Messages, notification summaries, and improved Smart Replies, are not simply proof that all Siri requests run locally on the watch.

For Siri AI announced for watchOS 27: Apple’s June 2026 announcement lists Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, and Apple Watch SE 3, with a nearby Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. Apple described availability as staged, including future beta availability, and subject to software, language, and regional requirements. It is not the same as the SE 3’s basic on-device handling of local requests, and the announcement should not be read as a guarantee of general offline Siri. See Apple’s Siri AI announcement for its conditions.
Feature availability can vary by country, region, and language. Check Apple’s watchOS feature availability page if an advertised feature is missing. Siri’s shorter “Siri” wake phrase, without “Hey,” is not supported in every language or region.

How to invoke Siri and check its settings
Use whichever activation method works best for you:
- Raise to Speak: Raise your wrist and say the request.
- Voice activation: Say “Hey Siri,” or “Siri” where supported, followed by the request.
- Digital Crown: Press and hold the Digital Crown until the listening indicator appears, then speak.
On the watch, open Settings > Siri. Check that the desired listening method is enabled: Raise to Speak, Listen for “Siri” or “Hey Siri”, and/or Press Digital Crown. If Siri responds on screen but you cannot hear it, check Siri Responses and the selected Siri voice. Apple lists response options including Always On, Control With Silent Mode, and Headphones Only.
If speaking is difficult or the watch cuts off your request, open Settings > Accessibility > Siri. Turn on Type to Siri if available and adjust Siri Pause Time to Longer or Longest. See Apple’s Siri accessibility guide.

Test whether a request truly works offline
- Charge and update the watch before leaving coverage. First confirm that Siri works while the watch is connected.
- On the watch, enable Airplane Mode from Control Center: press the side button, then tap the Airplane Mode button. Airplane Mode normally turns off Wi-Fi and cellular, but Bluetooth remains on by default.
- For a stricter test, make sure Wi-Fi and cellular are off and turn Bluetooth off or move away from the paired iPhone. Otherwise, the watch may still be using the iPhone connection.
- Invoke Siri with the Digital Crown, which avoids confusing a wake-phrase issue with a connectivity issue.
- Try a local command, such as setting a short timer or starting a workout. Then try an online command, such as asking for the weather.
- If the local action works and the online request asks for a connection or fails, you have demonstrated the distinction—not that every supported local command will work on every watch.
For Airplane Mode details, see Apple’s Apple Watch Airplane Mode guide.
When Siri fails: troubleshoot in this order
- Check the connection. For an online request, confirm the watch has a connection to its iPhone, a usable Wi-Fi network, or active cellular service and coverage.
- Test activation separately. Press and hold the Digital Crown. If that works but “Hey Siri” does not, check the watch’s listening settings and language support.
- Confirm Siri is enabled. Check Settings > Siri on the watch and Siri settings on the paired iPhone.
- Restart the watch. Then test a local request and an online request again.
- Check the microphone and speaker. Remove a case if it blocks an opening and clear visible dirt; an obstructed microphone can look like a Siri or network failure.
- Check Siri Voice downloads. Apple says Apple Watch Series 3 and later may need to download the Siri voice while connected to Wi-Fi and charging. If spoken responses are missing, let the watch charge on Wi-Fi.
- Separate local from online failure. If a timer works but weather does not, focus on connectivity or service availability rather than Siri activation.
Apple’s Siri troubleshooting guide covers these checks. If an Apple Intelligence feature is unavailable, also check that the required device and Siri languages match and that any required language files have finished downloading.
What still works on a disconnected watch
Losing connectivity does not make an Apple Watch useless. Depending on the feature and prior setup, you can use workouts, timers, alarms, stopwatch, activity tracking, Compass, Apple Pay, many health features, and media downloaded to the watch. Offline maps can be useful when downloaded and synced in advance in supported regions. These functions can often be opened directly even if Siri cannot hear or process a request.
If you rely on a feature while hiking, running, or traveling, test it before you go: download what you need, confirm it appears on the watch, and check whether the feature requires a network, a paired iPhone, or a cellular plan. A cellular model is useful when you want online services away from your iPhone and have coverage, but it does not turn all Siri requests into offline requests.
