A reported Wear OS 6 rendering bug can leave parts of a third-party Galaxy Watch face visible over its active screen after the watch wakes from Always On Display (AOD). Samsung has not confirmed a release date for a fix to this specific problem. For now, switching to a preinstalled Samsung face or temporarily turning off AOD are the most practical workarounds.
What the One UI 8 Watch face bug looks like
The reported glitch happens as a watch moves between its dimmed, low-power AOD view and its full interactive face. The AOD view may look normal while the watch is idle. After you raise your wrist, tap the display or otherwise wake it, elements from the dimmed view can remain on top of the active face. Hands, numerals, complications or background details may look doubled, faded or partly transparent.
It has been reported mainly with some third-party faces, and it may come and go as the watch changes display states. A face switch or restart may clear the artifact temporarily, but neither is a confirmed repair. Reports describe the issue as intermittent and face-dependent, not a failure affecting every Galaxy Watch running One UI 8 Watch. (SamMobile; Android Authority)

Reports mention Galaxy Watch 4, Watch 5, Watch 6, Watch 7, Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch Ultra models running One UI 8 Watch, based on Wear OS 6. That list describes models implicated in coverage; it does not mean every model, software build or face is affected. Update availability can also differ by model, country, carrier and Bluetooth or LTE configuration.

The specific ghosting pattern is reported more often with third-party faces. Preinstalled Samsung faces are the leading workaround and are generally reported not to show this particular transition artifact. That is a pattern, not a guarantee: other AOD or display problems can have different causes, and a stock face does not rule those out.
Is a fix coming soon?
There is no verified public date for a fix to this exact third-party-face rendering bug. A report mentions January 12, but gives the year as 2025 despite being updated in January 2026. Because those dates conflict, that reference should not be treated as a reliable patch schedule. (SamMobile’s report)

Samsung community moderators have discussed a forthcoming software patch for certain Galaxy Watch 4 AOD and sensor-related issues. That is evidence of work on a related problem, not confirmation that the same patch fixes the third-party face ghosting described here. A future One UI Watch or Wear OS update may address it, but Samsung has not publicly confirmed a date for this specific fix. (Samsung Community discussion)
Why might Wear OS 6 be involved?
Google’s Wear OS 6 documentation describes changes to ambient-mode behavior and support in Watch Face Format 4 for animated transitions between ambient and interactive states. Those changes provide relevant context for a bug that appears during the AOD-to-active transition. The reported explanation is that a transition may not finish before the display enters a lower-power state, leaving parts of both visual states on screen.

That is a plausible explanation based on platform changes and reporting, not a confirmed technical diagnosis from Samsung or Google. The platform documentation explains how ambient behavior and transitions work; it does not say that a specific transition defect causes the reported Galaxy Watch ghosting. What to try on your Galaxy Watch
- Switch to a preinstalled Samsung face. In the Galaxy Wearable app on your paired phone, open Watch faces, select a Samsung-installed face and apply it. Wake the watch several times to see whether the overlay returns. Menu labels can vary with the app version and phone software.
- Temporarily turn off AOD. On the watch, open its Display settings and look for Always On Display. With AOD disabled, the watch no longer makes the same AOD-to-active transition. You lose the persistent low-power clock, so this is a trade-off rather than a full fix.
- Restart the watch. A reboot may clear a temporary rendering state. If the issue returns when the watch again moves between AOD and active mode, the restart has not corrected the underlying bug. Samsung’s frozen or unresponsive watch troubleshooting includes reboot guidance.
- Check for software and face updates. In Galaxy Wearable, look under Watch settings for Watch software update. Also check the Play Store or Galaxy Store for updates to Galaxy Wearable, the affected face and related apps. An update is not proof of a fix unless its notes or testing specifically confirm it.
- Send a useful error report if it persists. Include your watch model and Bluetooth/LTE type, phone model, One UI Watch and Wear OS versions, face name and developer, whether AOD is on, and a short video or photos showing the transition. Note whether switching faces or restarting clears it. Samsung’s community guidance on watch issue reports describes reporting through Galaxy Wearable or the relevant support channel.
A factory reset is not a sensible first step for a face-rendering artifact: the available evidence does not establish that it fixes this bug, and resetting can mean extra setup and data-restoration work.

How to tell ghosting from a different watch problem
The reported transition bug is a better fit if the face remains visible but looks layered or ghosted, the effect appears when waking from AOD, and it is associated with a third-party face. If switching to a Samsung face makes it stop, that also points toward a face or transition issue.

Other symptoms may need a different diagnosis:
- The face is missing, will not download or will not load: this is not the same as a visible face with overlapping layers. Samsung notes that previously used faces can stop working because of Google Play Store policy changes; see its watch-face troubleshooting.
- AOD turns off, sensor readings are wrong, or the issue occurs with multiple faces: these may be separate software or device problems. Reports about other One UI 8 Watch AOD and sensor glitches should not be treated as proof they share the same cause as third-party-face ghosting.
- The screen remains frozen across faces or does not respond: follow Samsung’s troubleshooting for an unresponsive watch rather than assuming this rendering bug is responsible.
Reports involving Pixel Watches as well as Galaxy Watches suggest the broader behavior may involve Wear OS 6, but they do not establish that every device or face is affected. The reported ghosting is not, by itself, evidence that a watch’s display or motherboard is defective. (Android Authority)

For watch-face developers
Secondary coverage reports a possible face-side workaround using a zero-duration transition in the face’s XML, such as duration="0". That is a developer-level option, not a change ordinary users can make to an installed face, and it should not be treated as a universal fix. Developers should test repeated transitions on real Wear OS 6 hardware, including cases where the display dims or suspends before an animation completes, and validate AOD, wake, complications and rendering with Google’s Watch Face Format setup and validation guidance.
