The China-market OPPO Watch X went on sale on March 29, 2024, with an independent, watch-specific WeChat app—not a separate, clearly defined hardware model called the “WeChat Edition.” OPPO announced the launch for 10:00 a.m. China time, with sales online and in physical stores. The feature let users handle selected WeChat tasks away from a paired phone when the watch had its own supported network connection. Xinhua reported the sale time and channels; IT之家 described the WeChat app and its functions.
What the Watch X’s WeChat app did
The app, called WeChat Watch Edition in Chinese coverage, was designed for the watch rather than simply mirroring phone notifications. It offered a narrower set of tasks than the smartphone app, including selected messaging, payment and fitness features. Contemporary Chinese reporting described it as an early Android smartwatch implementation with independent WeChat use; that characterization is attributed to coverage, not a verified industry-wide ranking. - Reply with quick replies, voice or emoji; reported features also included voice-to-text.
- Use WeChat Pay and synchronize WeChat fitness data, as reported at launch.
OPPO’s China product page currently lists quick, voice and emoji replies, image viewing and WeChat Pay. The additional details about recent chats, voice-to-text and fitness synchronization were reported by IT之家. Neither source establishes that the watch app duplicated every feature of phone WeChat. How phone-free use worked—and what it required
“Independent” meant the watch did not need to stay connected to the phone by Bluetooth for supported online functions. It did not mean WeChat worked offline: messages and other network-dependent functions still needed connectivity.

- Bluetooth: The watch can rely on a paired phone’s connection and services.
- Wi-Fi: Online functions may work where the watch and service support it.
- Independent cellular: Phone-free use requires a functioning network path, such as an activated compatible eSIM on the China model.
OPPO describes the China Watch X as supporting an independent eSIM, including a carrier “one number, dual terminal” arrangement or a separate watch number. The company cautions that service availability varies by city and carrier and may still be undergoing optimization. Software and mode requirements
OPPO’s China product material currently lists watch system version A.59 or later, phone WeChat 8.0.48 or later, and full smart mode as requirements for WeChat Watch Edition. These are the requirements shown on that page now; they should not be assumed to describe every original launch build or regional firmware. Full smart mode is also more power-intensive than a low-power watch mode, so the WeChat feature’s availability has a battery trade-off. OPPO Watch X China page
China launch date, availability and prices
The March 29 date is historical: this was a mainland China sale in 2024, not a new 2026 launch. Xinhua reported the 10:00 a.m. China-time start and simultaneous online and offline sales. The prices below are China launch prices from 2024, not verified current retail prices.

The lower figures were reported for the first sale; they are not a second set of standard prices. Xinhua’s launch coverage lists standard pricing, while IT之家’s March 29 sale report lists first-sale pricing.
Hardware behind the feature
OPPO built the Watch X around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 platform and a dual-chip design intended to balance smart-mode performance with battery life. Other launch specifications included dual-frequency GPS using L1 and L5 bands, a sapphire-crystal display cover and an integrated steel case. For independent WeChat, the practical enabler was the China model’s cellular/eSIM capability; the other specifications are supporting context rather than a guarantee of regional service compatibility. The WeChat announcement concerned the China-market Watch X. OPPO also introduced an international Watch X, but its Singapore launch material does not establish that the same independent WeChat implementation was available on that version. Before buying an imported China model, verify the exact device edition, firmware, phone pairing, carrier and payment setup for your location. The available sources do not establish a current country-by-country compatibility list, so they cannot confirm local eSIM activation, payment support, warranty coverage, app availability or regional service compatibility for a particular buyer.

- Payments: Confirm that your account, card and intended payment scenarios are supported. WeChat Pay on the watch is not a promise of universal bank, merchant or country support.

What about the OPPO Watch 4 Pro?
At announcement, OPPO was reported to have scheduled WeChat Watch Edition support for the Watch 4 Pro by May 31, 2024. That was a rollout timetable, not confirmation that every device or regional firmware received the feature. Owners should check the update and WeChat support for their specific China-market watch rather than infer eligibility from the announced date. IT之家’s announcement report
Who the feature suited
The strongest fit was a mainland China-based WeChat user who regularly left a phone behind, could activate a compatible watch service and wanted short replies, image viewing or payment actions from the wrist. It was a much less certain proposition for an international buyer whose decision depended on local eSIM service, payment compatibility, regional software or warranty. For those buyers, confirming the exact edition and service combination matters more than the “WeChat” label.
