Short version: Oura prevailed in the U.S. International Trade Commission’s final decision against Ultrahuman and RingConn in investigation No. 337-TA-1398. The Commission issued import and cease-and-desist remedies over claims in Oura’s U.S. Patent No. 11,868,178. RingConn later settled with Oura, licensed patents and had its remedies rescinded. Ultrahuman appealed, so its position remains a separate, unresolved question in the latest USITC record.
This was a Section 337 trade case, not a conventional federal-court damages verdict. The orders concerned covered imported products and specified conduct by named respondents; they did not automatically require consumers to return or destroy rings.
What Oura actually won
Oura’s complaint led to USITC investigation No. 337-TA-1398, titled Certain Smart Wearable Devices, Systems, and Components Thereof. The complainants were Ouraring, Inc. and Ōura Health Oy. The initial respondents included Ultrahuman entities, RingConn LLC, Shenzhen Ninenovo Technology Limited and Circular SAS.

The final Commission finding was that Ultrahuman and RingConn violated Section 337 through imported products covered by remaining asserted claims of Oura’s ’178 patent. Patents Nos. 10,842,429 and 11,868,179 had originally been asserted, but the investigation was narrowed before the final decision. The Commission’s June 2025 review notice explains that it reviewed portions of the administrative law judge’s initial determination, including the domestic-industry issue for the ’178 patent: USITC review notice.

Initial determination versus final determination
On April 18, 2025, an administrative law judge issued an initial determination finding a violation. That was the event described in much of the early coverage, including reports published around May 1. An initial determination is subject to Commission review; it is not the final agency outcome.
On August 21, 2025, the full Commission issued its final determination and imposed a limited exclusion order and cease-and-desist orders. That is the decisive USITC ruling.
What the remedies mean
- Limited exclusion order: directs U.S. Customs enforcement against covered infringing products imported by the named respondents. It is not automatically a ban on every product, accessory or future design from a company.
- Cease-and-desist order: restricts specified conduct by named respondents involving covered products already in the United States.
- Not a damages award: the USITC is a trade agency. This proceeding did not produce a jury verdict awarding Oura money, and it was not a federal-court recall order.
The Commission later clarified that the remedial orders allowed certain warranty-related imports and replacements for covered products purchased before the end of the presidential-review period. The clarification is recorded in the agency’s December notice: USITC remedial-order notice.

What happened to RingConn?
RingConn’s original status changed after the final ruling. On November 17, 2025, Oura and RingConn jointly asked the Commission to rescind the exclusion order as to RingConn and rescind RingConn’s cease-and-desist orders. Their filing said RingConn had licensed a group of Oura patents and that the settlement resolved the relevant dispute.
On December 8, 2025, the Commission granted the request and modified the operative exclusion order to remove RingConn, while rescinding RingConn’s cease-and-desist orders. It is therefore inaccurate to describe RingConn as permanently barred on the basis of the August ruling alone. The settlement resolved the cited remedies; it does not establish blanket immunity from every future Oura patent claim or cover every future product.

What happened to Ultrahuman?
Ultrahuman’s path is different. The USITC record identifies an appeal, Ultrahuman Healthcare Pvt. Ltd. v. ITC, No. 26-1083, at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Ultrahuman also filed an emergency motion seeking a stay of the exclusion and cease-and-desist orders.

The available Commission record confirms the appeal and stay request, but does not establish whether the Federal Circuit granted the stay, reversed the determination or otherwise ended the dispute. Any claim that Ultrahuman “lost permanently” or that its appeal succeeded would go beyond that record.
Were the rings immediately banned for consumers?
No blanket consumer ban follows from the USITC decision. The orders addressed covered infringing products, imports and conduct by named respondents. They did not instruct ordinary owners to surrender, destroy or stop using devices they already bought.

Existing devices and apps
The cited orders concern hardware importation and related company conduct. They do not, by themselves, shut down an Oura, Ultrahuman or RingConn app, disable cloud accounts or establish that a software feature infringes.
Warranty replacements
The Commission specifically addressed certain warranty-related imports and replacements in its remedial clarification. Owners should still check the manufacturer’s current warranty policy for the exact model and purchase date.

Future purchases
Availability can depend on inventory, customs enforcement, redesigns, licensing and the seller. A redesigned product may fall outside particular patent claims or order language, while existing stock may be treated differently from new imports. Check the exact model, U.S. seller, return window and warranty rather than relying on a brand-wide headline.

Why the decision matters to smart rings
Smart rings combine miniaturized sensors, electronics, algorithms, industrial design and health or wellness software. A Section 337 exclusion order can threaten a hardware company’s U.S. supply chain and market access, not merely create a later damages bill.
Oura’s result shows why patent portfolios matter when rivals manufacture abroad and sell into the United States. RingConn’s settlement shows the other route: licensing can preserve market access while removing a specific enforcement risk. Neither outcome means Oura owns the smart-ring category or that every competing metric, feature or design infringes.

What buyers should check now
- Confirm that the exact ring model is currently sold in the United States.
- Read the manufacturer’s warranty, replacement and return terms.
- Check app support, phone compatibility and cloud-service continuity.
- Separate legal availability risk from sensor performance, privacy, subscription cost and total ownership cost.
- Use the manufacturer’s current policy, not a 2025 headline, to assess a purchase.

In January 2026, the USITC instituted a separate investigation based on Samsung’s complaint against Oura: USITC Samsung investigation announcement. That proceeding is unrelated to investigation 337-TA-1398 and should not be treated as a reversal of Oura’s earlier result.
