Oura’s subscription is unlikely to disappear. As of August 18, 2026, Oura still makes Membership central to the Ring 4 and Ring 5 experience, charging US customers $5.99 per month or $69.99 per year before tax after one included month. Without Membership, the ring continues to provide three daily scores, but most of the detailed data and interpretation that make Oura compelling are restricted.
That is the uncomfortable bargain: Oura is selling an expensive piece of hardware, then charging again for much of the software that makes it useful. The model is commercially rational because Oura’s advantage is its ongoing analysis and guidance—not simply the sensors inside the ring. It is also perfectly reasonable for customers to decide that the recurring cost is too high.
The short answer
Oura’s current strategy strongly indicates that Membership is here to stay, although the company has not guaranteed that it will charge the same fee forever. Oura is no longer positioning the ring as a one-time gadget. It is building a continuing health platform around cloud synchronization, historical trends, personalized recommendations, reports, algorithm updates, integrations, and newer AI-driven features.

That explanation does not make the subscription automatically good value. Oura charges for the ring and for continued access to much of the data interpretation generated from it. The real question is not whether Oura can justify charging for software. It is whether the software is valuable enough for you to pay for every year.

What Oura Membership actually pays for
Membership is the interpretation layer between the ring’s sensors and the conclusions shown in the app. Oura’s current Membership documentation lists access to:
- Detailed sleep analysis
- 24/7 heart-rate tracking, including daytime, nighttime, and activity readings
- Advanced temperature monitoring and Blood Oxygen Sensing
- Daytime Stress and Resilience features
- Dynamic activity goals and Automatic Activity Detection
- Cardiovascular Age and Cardio Capacity/VO2 Max
- Metabolic Health features such as Glucose Tracking and Meals
- Oura Labs experiments and newer platform features
- Weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly, and anniversary reports
- Cycle Insights, Fertile Window, and Pregnancy Insights
- Third-party integrations, including Strava
- Features such as Health Radar, Live Activity Tracking, GLP-1 Insights, data controls, and device-location tools
Some features depend on the ring generation, phone platform, region, language, or enough personal history to establish a baseline. Oura’s Discovery Hub, for example, looks for relationships between tagged behaviors and biometric changes over time. That kind of feature cannot provide much value from a single day’s readings.
Oura’s May 2026 software announcement also illustrates why the company treats Membership as an evolving service. The value is not fixed at the moment of purchase; Oura continues adding app experiences and analytical features to supported devices.
What remains when you cancel?
“The ring still works without a subscription” is technically true, but it needs a large qualification. Without active Membership, Oura says users retain access to:
- Readiness Score
- Activity Score
- Sleep Score
- Ring battery information
- Basic profile information
- App settings
- Explore content
The hardware can continue collecting signals, but the consumer-facing interpretation layer is heavily restricted. You do not retain the full sleep breakdown, detailed trends, reports, stress tools, most specialized health features, or the broader set of personalized insights that justify buying Oura instead of a basic tracker.

Your stored data is not automatically deleted when you cancel. Oura says it remains associated with your account, and you can export personal data as CSV files through Membership Hub. The Oura API is unavailable without active Membership, however, which limits access to outside tools and personal dashboards. Membership is tied to the Oura account rather than the physical ring.
How much does the fee add to ownership?
Oura’s current US pricing is:

New members receive one complimentary month. Monthly billing for 12 months totals $71.88, making the annual plan $1.89 cheaper before tax. Oura says plans can be changed or canceled, but there is no pause option.
These figures sit on top of the hardware price, which varies by model, size, finish, region, and promotion. Check the official Oura store for the current Ring 4 or Ring 5 price rather than treating the ring and Membership as a single fixed-cost product.
The five-year figure should not automatically be described as money lost. If you use Oura’s software throughout those five years, you are paying for a continuing service. But it is still important to include the fee in the ownership calculation. A buyer who focuses only on the initial ring price is understating the actual cost.
Why Oura has a defensible reason to charge
It is processing an ongoing stream of data
The ring gathers physiological and behavioral signals, while the app synchronizes, stores, analyzes, and contextualizes them. Oura’s privacy policy describes processing information such as heart rate, movement, temperature, sleep duration and phases, activity, tags, and AI-generated insights. Cloud infrastructure, account services, customer support, and data security all create continuing costs.

The useful part is longitudinal
A single sleep score is not the whole product. Readiness, resilience, stress, cycle, and trend features become more meaningful when they are compared with your own history. Personalized guidance requires algorithms, ongoing maintenance, and enough data to understand what is normal for you.

Oura has continued adding features such as Health Radar, Live Activity Tracking, GLP-1 Insights, privacy controls, and AI-related functionality. That supports the company’s description of Membership as an active software platform rather than a static collection of launch-day features.
Oura operates a wider data and research business
Oura also offers research and enterprise tools, including dashboards, integrations, cohort analysis, and access to biometric data for studies through its research platform. That does not prove that a particular portion of your consumer fee funds a particular study, but it does show that Oura is operating more than a ring-manufacturing business.
Recurring revenue makes support predictable
A hardware-only company receives most of its revenue when a device is sold, then supports that device and its software for years. Membership gives Oura recurring revenue that can help fund engineering, servers, support, app development, algorithm updates, and research.
That is the economic logic of the model, not a disclosed item-by-item breakdown of where every membership dollar goes. Oura has also defended the subscription as supporting accuracy and upgrades, according to reported comments from CEO Tom Hale. That is Oura’s position, not independently audited proof that the fee is required for accuracy.

Why the criticism remains fair
The strongest criticism is not that software has no ongoing cost. It is that Oura sells premium hardware while withholding most of the practical value generated by that hardware unless the owner keeps paying.
- Double payment: Customers pay hundreds of dollars upfront and then pay indefinitely for the full experience.
- A restricted ownership experience: The ring remains physically yours, but its useful app experience depends on Oura continuing to operate your account and services.
- Uncertain long-term cost: Future price increases would raise the real cost of keeping the ring for several years.
- Reduced resale appeal: A used ring is less attractive when the buyer must also accept an ongoing fee.
- Dependence on the platform: Cancellation limits the API and detailed consumer features, while Oura has announced that Oura on the Web will be discontinued later in 2026; the retrieved announcement did not specify the exact timing or replacement details.
There is also a philosophical objection: the customer’s body generates the raw information, so restricting access to detailed analysis can feel like a paywall on personal data. Oura’s data-protection materials say it does not sell data to third parties, but privacy questions still deserve attention because cloud processing, AI, integrations, research permissions, and third-party services can involve different controls and terms. Avoid reducing that issue to the unsupported claim that Oura simply “owns” or “sells” your health data.

Samsung, RingConn, Ultrahuman, and other competitors demonstrate that a recurring fee is a strategic choice, not a universal technical requirement. A company can rely primarily on hardware margins, process more data on the device, offer fewer cloud-intensive services, subsidize software through a larger ecosystem, or sell optional services separately.
That does not prove Oura is overcharging. A no-subscription product may have less mature software, narrower compatibility, fewer integrations, weaker support, or a different approach to historical analysis. Subscription-free ownership is not the same thing as equivalent software.

It does, however, weaken Oura’s simplest defense. If another ring offers detailed tracking without a mandatory annual payment, buyers are entitled to ask what they receive in exchange for Oura’s fee: better interpretation, stronger accuracy evidence, a more mature app, better support, more reliable integrations, or merely a more profitable business model.

Availability, compatibility, warranty terms, feature sets, and support can change by country and model. Do not assume that any alternative is a guaranteed replacement for Oura’s software experience.
Who should pay for Oura Membership?
Membership is easiest to justify if you:
- Wear and sync the ring most days.
- Care more about sleep and recovery than smartwatch notifications or exercise controls.
- Want recommendations and conclusions rather than raw measurements.
- Use cycle, pregnancy, stress, resilience, cardiovascular, or metabolic features.
- Expect to keep the ring for at least three years.
- Value Oura’s app, integrations, and accumulated history enough to pay $69.99 annually.
- Prefer a discreet ring to a watch or wrist tracker.
It is harder to justify if you:
- Want only basic sleep or activity data.
- Object strongly to recurring fees.
- Replace wearables frequently.
- Prefer raw data or your own third-party analysis.
- Already use a compatible Samsung phone and prefer its ecosystem.
- Need the device to remain fully featured after the initial purchase.
Give particular thought to the trial period. A one-month experiment may not reveal the value of reports or longitudinal features that require more history. Conversely, do not leave a payment method active by accident: Oura collects payment details during setup and charges after the included month unless the plan is canceled.
Important ownership edge cases
- Gen2 owners: Gen2 does not require Membership, although many newer features are incompatible with it. Oura says routine updates will continue for the foreseeable future.
- Upgraders: Membership follows the Oura account, so supported ring upgrades do not require a separate membership for the new ring.
- Multiple rings: Oura’s Ring 5 announcement says members can pair and switch among multiple Ring 4 and Ring 5 devices on one account without an additional membership fee.
- Returned retailer purchases: Returning the ring does not necessarily cancel Membership. Cancel the plan separately to avoid continued billing, as explained in Oura’s retail-purchase guidance.
- Medical use: Oura says the Ring is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, monitor, or prevent medical conditions. Its scores and trends should not be treated as clinical conclusions.
The verdict
Oura’s subscription probably is not going away because it is central to how the company creates value and recurring revenue. The ring’s sensors matter, but Oura’s competitive advantage is the software layer that turns months of signals into trends, context, and guidance.

That makes the subscription understandable—not automatically fair. Oura asks customers to pay both for the device and for continued access to much of what makes the device special. If you want Oura’s mature sleep and wellness interpretation and will use it for years, Membership can be a sensible ongoing service. If you want full ownership, basic tracking, or predictable costs, a subscription-free ring is the more coherent choice.
