Yes—the Pebble comeback is real. Google released most of the PebbleOS source code on January 27, 2025, but it did not build a new watch. That release enabled Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky and his small RePebble operation to revive the platform. New Pebble watches are now being sold: the Pebble Time 2 is listed at $225 and shipping, the Pebble Round 2 at $199 with new orders scheduled for September 2026, and the Pebble 2 Duo at $149 but currently sold out. Check the official store for live availability.
The short version
Google’s role in the Pebble revival was software, not hardware. After Google acquired Fitbit, it released most of the source code for PebbleOS—the operating system used by Pebble watches before Fitbit acquired the company in 2016. That gave the community and Pebble’s original founder a foundation for new development.
Eric Migicovsky’s revived Pebble effort subsequently moved from a proposal to commercial hardware. RePebble now sells watches built around the same core idea: an always-on e-paper display, physical buttons, long battery life, simple notifications, and a customizable app and watchface ecosystem.

The result is not an Apple Watch or Garmin replacement. It is a deliberately simpler smartwatch for people who value weeks of battery life and glanceable information more than GPS, advanced training data, cellular connectivity, or a large modern app ecosystem.

Why Google had PebbleOS
Pebble launched through Kickstarter in 2012 and became popular for doing less than its rivals, but doing the essentials well. Its watches used low-power e-paper displays, physical buttons, straightforward notifications, and batteries that lasted far longer than most contemporary smartwatches.
Fitbit acquired Pebble in 2016 and discontinued the original business. Google later acquired Fitbit, bringing the relevant Pebble-era intellectual property under Google ownership. On January 27, 2025, Google released most of the PebbleOS source code and published the project on GitHub. The announcement was intended to help preserve support for existing watches and enable new development.
The release included core operating-system functionality such as notifications, media controls, fitness tracking, custom applications, watchfaces, and support for small ARM-based microcontrollers. Google did not release a complete new product ecosystem in a box, however.
Open-source software can preserve a platform; it cannot manufacture watches. The PebbleOS release did not automatically recreate the companion phone apps, cloud services, servers, app-store infrastructure, customer support, manufacturing operation, or original corporate structure.
It is therefore inaccurate to say that Google “brought Pebble back.” Google supplied the software catalyst. The current hardware, store, and revival effort are associated with Migicovsky and RePebble.
From open-source code to real watches
The revival progressed quickly after the source release:
- January 27, 2025: Google announced the PebbleOS source-code release, while Migicovsky announced plans for a new Pebble-like smartwatch.
- February 6, 2025: PebbleOS was demonstrated on new hardware using an nRF52840 Bluetooth 5.3 chipset, showing that the project had moved beyond an abstract software exercise. 9to5Google reported on the demonstration.
- March 2025: RePebble announced new hardware derived from Pebble’s design philosophy, initially using the Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2 names. The launch coverage is available here.
- March 24, 2026: Pebble Time 2 entered mass production. RePebble’s production update described the manufacturing progress.
- July 14, 2026: RePebble said more than 23,000 Time 2 units had been built and reported improved battery results following software updates. Its July update includes the latest figures.
As of the official store information checked on August 18, 2026, the revival is no longer a “coming soon” story. The Time 2 is listed in stock and shipping within 48 hours, the Round 2 has a September shipping window for new orders, and the Pebble 2 Duo is listed as sold out or unavailable for immediate purchase.

Prices and stock are volatile, so treat the figures above as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent price list. The official product page is the appropriate place to confirm current stock, shipping estimates, warranty terms, and regional costs.
Pebble Time 2: the most capable revival model
The Time 2 is the strongest all-rounder in the current lineup. Its 1.5-inch, 64-color e-paper display is larger than the Round 2’s panel, and it combines touchscreen interaction with four physical buttons. It also adds a heart-rate monitor, compass, six-axis motion sensing, microphone, and speaker.
RePebble advertises up to 30 days of battery life, but that should not be read as a guaranteed result for every owner. In its July 2026 update, the company reported a median battery life of approximately 21 days under current usage. Backlight use, animated or frequently updating watchfaces, vibration, health tracking, and other processor-intensive features can reduce runtime.
The Time 2 uses stainless steel and polycarbonate construction, supports iPhone and Android, provides access to PebbleOS and the Pebble Appstore, and is rated for approximately 30-meter water resistance when new and properly sealed.

Pebble Round 2: a smaller, round alternative
The Round 2 is aimed at buyers who prefer a more traditional round watch design. It has a 1.3-inch, 64-color e-paper display with 260 × 260 resolution, a touchscreen, four buttons, a stainless-steel frame, compass, three-axis motion sensing, microphone, and step and sleep tracking.
Its advertised battery range is 10 to 14 days—shorter than the Time 2’s headline estimate but still substantially longer than many full-featured smartwatches. The store’s September 2026 shipping window means it should not be treated as an immediately dispatchable product unless the official listing changes.
RePebble describes the Round 2 as targeting approximately 30-meter water resistance. “Target” matters here: use it as a water-resistant watch, not a waterproof one, and remember that seals can weaken with age, repairs, or battery replacement.

Pebble 2 Duo: the closest match for classic Pebble fans
The Pebble 2 Duo is the most traditional option. It uses a 1.2-inch black-and-white e-paper display and a polycarbonate body, with a barometer, compass, microphone, step and sleep tracking, and long battery life.
It is the natural choice for someone who wants the original Pebble experience rather than color and touchscreen features. The problem is availability: although the listed price is $149, the official store currently marks the model sold out or unavailable for immediate purchase.
What “open source” means for owners
PebbleOS being open source can make the platform more durable than a conventional discontinued gadget. Developers can inspect and modify the software, maintain apps and watchfaces, add language support, improve integrations, and fix bugs without waiting for every change to come from a large manufacturer.
RePebble’s updates describe work on PebbleOS and the companion app, including Apple HealthKit support, Google health synchronization, notification filtering, language packs, and other fixes. The official Appstore currently advertises more than 15,000 watchfaces and apps, although the exact catalog can change.
That does not guarantee unlimited compatibility. Open source does not make old batteries healthy, guarantee that every legacy app works identically on every model, or prevent future iOS and Android changes from affecting pairing and notifications. Hardware-specific features may require updated applications and drivers, while cloud services and app-store infrastructure may remain controlled by the project operators.

A watchface designed for a black-and-white screen may not exploit a color display. An app that expects a heart-rate sensor, speaker, touchscreen, or compass cannot provide the same experience on hardware that lacks that component. The official hardware comparison is the best source for model-specific differences.
iPhone and Android support is not identical
RePebble supports both iPhone and Android, which is one of the platform’s advantages over many device-specific alternatives. But “supports iPhone” does not mean “works like an Apple Watch.” Apple restricts what third-party watches can do, including how they interact with notifications. RePebble specifically warns that third-party watches cannot reply to notifications in the same way as an Apple Watch.

Before buying, iPhone users should verify the current behavior of:
- Notification delivery, dismissal, filtering, and replies.
- Health-data synchronization.
- Music controls and call notifications.
- The required iOS version and companion-app support.
- Compatibility of the apps and watchfaces they intend to use.
Android users should also check current phone compatibility, since operating-system updates can affect pairing and notification permissions. The safest assumption is that Pebble provides lightweight notification and control features—not the deep platform integration of Apple Watch, Wear OS, or a Pixel Watch.

Battery life: the major advantage, with an important qualification
Battery life is the reason to consider a revived Pebble. The Time 2 is advertised for up to 30 days, the Round 2 for 10–14 days, and the Pebble 2 Duo is designed for even longer use. But these numbers describe estimates or product targets, not universal real-world guarantees.
RePebble reported a median Time 2 runtime of approximately 21 days in July 2026 and a median Pebble 2 Duo runtime above 30 days. Those figures are more useful than a best-case headline, but they still depend on the watchface and settings. Frequent backlight use, animation, vibration, health tracking, and constant processor activity all consume more power.
The distinction matters when comparing products:
- Advertised battery life: the manufacturer’s stated estimate under selected conditions.
- Target battery life: a design goal that may change as software and hardware are optimized.
- Median observed battery life: a more practical central result reported by the company, but still not a guarantee for every user.
Water resistance, warranty, and shipping risks
The current models are described as water-resistant, generally around 30 meters. Do not call them waterproof. Water resistance applies to new, sealed hardware and may decline after aging, impact, repair, or battery replacement.
The official store’s warranty terms checked on August 18, 2026 stated that manufacturing defects are covered for 30 days after delivery. Replacement requires the defective watch to be returned and received. That is a notably short warranty compared with many mainstream electronics brands, and it is an important consideration when buying from a small company.

Shipping windows and stock can change. International buyers should review the current terms before ordering, particularly if delivery timing, local import rules, returns, or replacement support are important.
Is the revived Pebble a serious Apple Watch, Pixel Watch, or Garmin competitor?
Not on feature count. It is a competitor only if the buyer’s priorities are different.

Serious runners, cyclists, and triathletes should look at Garmin or another sports-focused watch. iPhone owners who want payments, rich apps, health features, and sophisticated notification interaction should look at Apple Watch. Android buyers wanting Google services, Fitbit integration, and modern smartwatch apps should consider Pixel Watch or a Wear OS model from Samsung or another manufacturer.
The revived Pebble’s appeal is philosophical as much as technical: it restores a simpler kind of smartwatch rather than trying to win a specification contest.
Who should buy one?
Buy one if:
- You want battery life measured in weeks rather than days.
- You prefer an always-on display and physical controls.
- You mainly need notification viewing, music controls, basic step or sleep tracking, and watchface customization.
- You use either iPhone or Android and accept platform-specific limitations.
- You value an open-source foundation and community development.
Look elsewhere if:
- You need built-in GPS or detailed training metrics.
- You expect ECG, blood-oxygen monitoring, cellular service, maps, or comprehensive medical features.
- You want Apple Watch-level iPhone integration or a large Wear OS app ecosystem.
- You require a long warranty, extensive retail support, or guaranteed immediate delivery.
- You need every legacy app to behave identically on every new model.
Bottom line
The 2025 headline is now outdated: Pebble is not merely “coming.” Google’s release of most of PebbleOS gave Eric Migicovsky and the wider developer community the foundation to revive the platform, and RePebble has turned that foundation into commercial watches.
The Pebble Time 2, Round 2, and Pebble 2 Duo are compelling for buyers who want an always-on e-paper display, physical buttons, customization, and unusually long battery life. They are not replacements for Apple Watch, Pixel Watch, Garmin, or high-end Wear OS watches when GPS, advanced health tools, sports analysis, payments, or deep phone integration matter more.
The revival is significant because it brings back a neglected smartwatch philosophy—not because these watches beat modern flagships on features.
