The original PineTime moved from an exposed developer kit to a sealed retail smartwatch with an IP67-rated case, factory-installed open-source InfiniTime firmware, and a launch community price of $26.99. The change made it more practical for everyday wear, but harder to open and debug. One naming caveat: this historical “goes pro” story is about the sealed original PineTime, not the separate PineTime Pro that PINE64 announced in 2026.
What changed when PineTime went from kit to retail watch?
The first PineTime developer kits were designed for experimentation: their unsealed housings made the hardware easier to access, but offered less protection from dust and moisture. The sealed retail PineTime kept the same open-source-oriented platform while adding a finished enclosure, charging dock, and IP67 ingress rating. It was not simply a cosmetic revision. The trade-off was durability for ordinary use versus convenient physical access for development.
The sealed version shipped with InfiniTime installed and was marketed at a $26.99 community price. At launch, PINE64 also offered a sealed-watch/developer-kit twin-pack for $49.98; that historical offer should not be taken as evidence that the bundle is still available. “PineTime Pro” is a different device
The wording in the old launch headline can be misleading now. The sealed retail PineTime is the original watch moving out of its developer-kit phase. PINE64 separately announced a more capable device called PineTime Pro on March 28, 2026. That project was still in prototype and pre-production development in the official update: it was not presented as a shipping retail watch with a confirmed price or release date.

The proposed Pro hardware is substantially different, with a dual-core Cortex-M33 platform, a 410×502 AMOLED display, GPS, a digital crown, microphone and speaker, and additional sensors. PINE64 said more hardware revisions and software bring-up were needed. Read PINE64’s announcement; do not treat the Pro name as a new edition of the sealed original or assume the announced specifications are final.

PINE64’s product page lists the sealed PineTime’s detailed specifications; its device page also describes the original platform. The quick-start guide gives the battery as 170–180 mAh, while the device page rounds it to 180 mAh, so approximately 180 mAh is a fair shorthand.
What IP67 means—and what it does not
In the IP code, the “6” means the enclosure is dust-tight. The “7” indicates protection against temporary immersion under defined test conditions, generally up to 1 metre for as long as 30 minutes. That rating is not a blanket promise that a watch is suitable for swimming, diving, hot water, or prolonged exposure to moisture.
For this particular watch, follow PINE64’s practical instruction: do not wear PineTime while showering or swimming. Water jets, steam, soap, shampoo, saltwater, and chlorinated pool water are not covered by the simple IP67 shorthand. Nor should an old or damaged seal be assumed to perform like a new one: impact, aging, opening, or repair can affect enclosure integrity. Do not charge the watch while it is wet. PINE64’s store listing includes the use warning; its device page describes the rating.
Firmware, apps, and everyday functions
The retail watch shipped with InfiniTime, community-developed open firmware. The launch-era version was InfiniTime 1.2.0, which included changes such as stopwatch improvements, a metronome, fixes, optimizations, and more room for developers. That identifies the launch software, not necessarily the version a buyer will receive or the current version.
On the watch, features include watch faces, step counting, heart-rate readings, a stopwatch, vibration and visual alerts, and lift-to-wake behavior. Pairing with a companion device can add notifications, music controls, heart-rate data transfer, navigation prompts, and Bluetooth firmware updates, depending on the firmware and app. The PineTime quick-start guide names Gadgetbridge for Android and Amazfish and Siglo for Linux; it also notes limited functionality through NRFConnect on Android and iOS. PineTime is a Bluetooth watch, not an independent cellular smartwatch: it has no LTE connection or standalone phone service. Its heart-rate sensor is not a medical device, and the watch should not be chosen for clinical monitoring or diagnosis.

Open platform, but not a Linux computer on your wrist
PineTime is best understood as an open-source smartwatch platform: community firmware projects such as InfiniTime and WaspOS, hardware-development resources, and companion integrations give users room to experiment and adapt the watch. “Open source” does not mean every chip, manufacturing process, or dependency is open, and the watch is not a miniature Linux computer.
Firmware experimentation is possible without opening the case, but the sealed enclosure matters if something goes wrong. PINE64 warns that the low-level debug interface is inaccessible from outside the sealed unit, making recovery from a bad flash less convenient. Opening the case can compromise its seal; the quick-start guide advises against disassembly. If direct debugging, hardware modification, or frequent recovery is central to your project, choose a developer kit instead.

The sealed model is more wearable, not an across-the-board replacement for the developer kit. The enclosure is a meaningful benefit for daily use and a real constraint for hands-on hardware work.
Is the original PineTime worth buying?
It makes sense for someone seeking an inexpensive, community-oriented watch for basic notifications, simple activity tracking, and firmware experimentation—particularly if Android or Linux integration and an open development ecosystem matter more than a polished app store. It is not a strong choice for swimming or showering, GPS, LTE, medical-grade health measurements, extensive commercial-watch apps, or easy physical repair.

As checked on August 18, 2026, PINE64’s official store listed the sealed original PineTime at a $26.99 community price and a $34.99 retail price, marked it in stock, and showed a 30-day warranty. These are time-specific store details, not a promise of current availability or pricing in every country. Check the official listing before buying.
