The Pixel Buds Pro 2 did join Google’s Moonstone lineup, but the “leak” is now old news: Google confirmed the color on August 20, 2025, and sales began August 28. Moonstone is a new finish for the existing Pixel Buds Pro 2—not a new generation or a documented hardware upgrade. In the US, Google lists them at $229.
What the original leak suggested
Before Google’s Pixel 10 launch, leak coverage pointed to a Moonstone version of the Pixel Buds Pro 2, matching the stone-like finish used across Google’s Pixel design lineup. The report concerned the color; it did not establish a new processor, acoustic design, or other hardware revision. At the time, an announcement alongside the new Pixel products was expected. Google later confirmed the color and its release dates.
Google announced Moonstone on August 20, 2025, with preorders opening that day and general availability starting August 28 through the Google Store and retail partners. The US list price was $229, unchanged from the existing Pro 2. Current Google Store listings show Moonstone alongside Porcelain, Peony, and Hazel, though color availability varies by region.

Moonstone is a color option, not a new generation
Google’s specifications identify the product as Pixel Buds Pro 2. The evidence supports treating Moonstone as a cosmetic variant, not Pixel Buds Pro 3 or a substantial hardware refresh. Google’s listed core specifications remain the same as the other Pro 2 colors:

Battery figures are Google’s “up to” estimates, not guaranteed real-world runtimes. IP54 and IPX4 are resistance ratings, not permission to submerge the earbuds or case. See Google’s full specifications for details.
What changed beyond the finish?
Google’s Moonstone announcement also covered software features planned for Pixel Buds Pro 2 in September 2025: Adaptive Audio, which adjusts noise control to the surroundings; Loud Noise Protection for sudden loud sounds; expanded Gemini Live use in noisier environments; and head gestures for accepting or dismissing calls and replies. Google presents these as software capabilities, not evidence of new Moonstone-only hardware. Feature availability and timing can depend on software rollout, supported devices, account, region, and language; Loud Noise Protection is a product feature, not a medical guarantee.

Pixel Buds Pro 2 can pair with Bluetooth 4.0-or-newer devices, including Android phones, iPhones, tablets, and laptops. Basic Bluetooth audio is therefore broader than the complete Google feature experience. Google’s specifications say full feature access requires a companion phone running Android 6.0 or newer, a Google Account, and internet access for relevant online services. iPhone owners can use them as Bluetooth headphones, but should not assume they will get feature parity with Android or Pixel phones. Check Google’s compatibility and setup guidance before buying for a particular device.

Google’s comparison lists the Pro 2 from $229 in the US and Pixel Buds 2a from $129. The Pro 2 is the better fit if you value Silent Seal 2.0 ANC, the higher-end software features, wireless charging, and the longer stated battery estimates. The 2a is the more sensible starting point if price matters most and you can do without some Pro features. Compare the current models and feature differences on Google’s comparison page; sale prices and regional pricing may differ from list prices.

Should existing Pixel Buds Pro 2 owners switch?
Usually not for technical reasons. If your current Pro 2 earbuds work well, Moonstone does not offer a documented improvement to audio, ANC, battery life, or connectivity. Consider it if you want the finish, need a replacement, or find a worthwhile discount—but color alone is not a hardware upgrade.
What about the 2026 green rumor?
A separate July 2026 report described a possible dark-green Pixel Buds Pro 2 variant linked to a removed Amazon listing. That is a different, unconfirmed report—not the Moonstone story and not evidence that Moonstone is new in 2026. See the report on the green listing for that rumor.
