Google’s Pixel reportedly grew its U.S. smartphone shipments 13% year over year and reached 3% of second-quarter shipments, ranking fourth in the cited Canalys data. That is positive momentum, but it arrived alongside three different owner headaches: Gboard failures, Garmin-watch disconnections after Android 16, and confusion over Pixel 6a battery-program payments.
These reports do not establish one common defect—or prove that Pixel phones are broadly unreliable. They do show how software maintenance, third-party compatibility and customer support become more visible as a phone brand’s installed base grows.
What the growth figures actually mean
The 13% increase and 3% share come from the market-growth figures reported by PiunikaWeb, which attributed them to Canalys. The available report does not provide enough detail here to independently confirm the exact quarter and publication-year wording, so these numbers should be read as attributed shipment data—not a measurement of Pixel’s installed base or retail sell-through.

A 3% shipment share is meaningful progress for Google, but it remains a modest position behind Apple, Samsung and Motorola in the cited U.S. ranking. “Shipments up” also does not necessarily mean that 13% more people bought phones directly from Google; market researchers may be counting channel shipments to carriers and retailers.

That distinction matters. Growth increases the number of customers encountering any bug, but anecdotes cannot tell us the failure rate.
Gboard: an everyday failure with no confirmed scope
Pixel owners reported Gboard freezing while typing, disappearing from the screen or becoming temporarily unresponsive in apps including Messages and WhatsApp. The reports cited Pixel 7, Pixel 8, Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL devices. Some users said force-stopping Gboard restored it only briefly.
Users also described clearing cache or storage, rolling back updates and testing Safe Mode without a durable result. Those are reports of attempted troubleshooting, not evidence that any one step is a universal fix. The available material does not establish whether a Gboard release, an Android security update or another interaction caused the failures, and no confirmed Google fix timetable is identified.

What to try
- Restart the phone, then install the latest Android and Gboard updates from their official update channels.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Gboard, force-stop it and clear its cache.
- If necessary, clear Gboard storage. This can erase learned words, preferences and other local data.
- Temporarily select another installed keyboard if typing is impossible.
- Check whether the problem occurs in more than one app and record the phone model, Android build and Gboard version.
- Send a report through Google’s Pixel support and feedback tools. A repeatable sequence is more useful than a general “keyboard broken” description.
Garmin watches and Android 16: a compatibility chain, not a proven single culprit
Google’s Pixel community includes a report from a Pixel 8a owner whose Garmin Vivoactive 5 repeatedly disconnected after Android 16 and the July security update. The user said disabling Android’s Advanced Protection reduced—but did not eliminate—the problem. Other community reports mention Pixel 8 or Pixel 9-family phones and Garmin models such as the Vivoactive 5 and Venu 3; the available evidence does not establish a failure affecting every model or user.
A Garmin forum participant said an update, including Connect IQ content, appeared to help. That is an individual mitigation, not proof of a universal Android 16 fix. Bluetooth behavior, permissions, background restrictions, Garmin Connect, watch firmware and a corrupted pairing state can all sit between a phone and watch.
Pairing checklist
- Update the Pixel, Garmin Connect, watch firmware and Connect IQ components.
- Restart both devices.
- Remove the watch from Android Bluetooth settings and Garmin Connect, then pair it again through Garmin Connect—not only through the Bluetooth menu.
- Review Garmin Connect’s battery-optimization and background-activity permissions.
- Test Advanced Protection on and off only as a diagnostic. Leaving a security feature disabled trades protection for a possible workaround.
- Synchronize important activities before deleting Garmin Connect or resetting the watch.
- If the problem continues, give both companies the phone model, Android build, watch model, firmware, Connect version and disconnect times.
For athletes whose recorded activity matters, a second recording device is sensible while troubleshooting. Replacing a watch may not help if the underlying problem is the phone, app or operating system.

Pixel 6a battery-program payments and Payoneer confusion
The refund complaints concern an Australian Pixel 6a battery-related program. The cited report says Google used Payoneer to distribute payments and that some recipients encountered identity checks, transfer delays, “closed account” notices or difficulty reaching support. It does not independently establish the program’s complete legal terms, the number of affected recipients or a guaranteed processing time.

- Google decides eligibility.
- Google initiates payment.
- The recipient creates or accesses a Payoneer account.
- Payoneer completes identity verification and bank linking.
- The payout is released and reaches the bank.
An approved claim can therefore be waiting at a later stage without proving that the eligibility decision was reversed. A reported five-to-eight-day arrival time is an anecdotal observation, not a service guarantee.
Protect yourself while waiting
- Use payment instructions reached through Google’s official program messages or Pixel support.
- Check the web address before entering identity or banking information.
- Never pay a fee to “unlock” a refund.
- Keep approval emails, case numbers, screenshots and transaction references.
- Ask Google about eligibility or payment initiation; use Payoneer’s official support for account or verification problems.
- Do not post bank details or identity documents in community forums.
Are these signs of a Pixel quality crisis?
The concerns are real enough to matter, but the evidence supports a narrower conclusion than “Pixel is defective.” Gboard affects a core phone function, Garmin complaints matter to owners who depend on training data, and payment confusion can damage trust after a battery program. Together, they expose different operational risks as Pixel expands.
They are nevertheless separate issues with different owners and remedies:

What this means if you own—or are considering—a Pixel
Prospective buyers
Pixel’s reported shipment growth suggests improving retail and carrier traction, and none of the three complaints is evidence that all Pixel hardware is defective. Before buying, however, verify compatibility for your exact phone, Android version, Garmin model and Garmin Connect release if a watch is essential. Also consider how disruptive a temporary keyboard failure or a slow support interaction would be.

Current owners
Document the failure before a factory reset, back up data and avoid treating an internet workaround as a permanent fix. Do not leave security protections disabled merely to preserve a Bluetooth connection.
Garmin users
Keep Garmin Connect and watch software current, preserve activity data and escalate with complete version details. A different Garmin model is not guaranteed to solve an Android or app regression.
Pixel 6a claimants
Separate approval from payout status, use only official Google and Payoneer channels, and retain every reference number. An unsolicited social-media “agent” requesting money or documents is a warning sign.
Status and evidence limits
The supplied reports document user experiences, not a complete resolution record through August 2026. The Gboard scope and fix status remain unquantified; Garmin reports suggest possible software mitigations without a model-wide confirmation; and the Australian payment process requires checking the official program terms for the claimant’s case. Treat each issue as a dated, software- and region-specific report rather than proof of a continuing universal failure.

Bottom line: Pixel is gaining market momentum, but the accompanying Gboard, Garmin and Pixel 6a payment reports reveal different support and compatibility weaknesses. They justify careful troubleshooting and verification—not a blanket verdict that Pixel phones or Garmin watches are unreliable.
