Google announced Scam Detection alerts for Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 on April 7, 2025—not in an April 2026 feature drop. The watch can show an alert during a suspected scam call, but it does not detect scams independently: the connected Pixel phone does the processing. Google’s watch-specific announcement lists a Pixel 9 or newer, a Bluetooth connection, the United States, and English-language calls as requirements.
What the Pixel Watch scam alert does
When a call handled by the paired Pixel phone is flagged as potentially scam-related, the Pixel Watch can surface an in-call warning on your wrist. That can be useful if your phone is in a bag or across the room, but the watch is an alert display—not a standalone call-analysis device. Google says Scam Detection looks for conversation patterns associated with scams while a call is in progress. Google’s watch rollout announcement does not specify that the watch shows a confidence score, caller identity, detailed explanation, or particular response controls, so do not count on those details.
This is also different from Call Screen, which can screen certain unknown callers before you speak with them. It is not the same as Android’s newer Fake Call Detection, a separate feature aimed at suspected spoofed or AI-impersonated calls.
Requirements: watch, phone, connection, and location
- Watch: Pixel Watch 2 or Pixel Watch 3. The cited watch rollout does not include Pixel Watch 1.
- Phone: Google’s watch-specific announcement names Pixel 9 and newer. Google’s broader Phone app help page now lists wider eligibility for phone-only Scam Detection, but that does not establish that an older Pixel supports the watch alert.
- Connection: The watch must be paired to the phone over Bluetooth. An LTE watch is not described as detecting calls on its own or as replacing this connection.
- Region and language: The watch announcement specifies the United States and English-language calls. Do not assume the feature works elsewhere or in other languages.
- Call handling: The qualifying Pixel phone must be handling the call with the relevant Phone by Google functionality.
These are the limits in the watch-specific announcement. In particular, the general phone eligibility listing should not be used to promise watch support for a Pixel 8 or older.

How to turn it on
Set up Scam Detection on the phone first, then keep the watch paired over Bluetooth. Google directs users to the phone’s Scam Detection settings, but the official material does not provide a complete current watch-specific menu path, and labels can vary with app versions. Open the Phone by Google app’s Scam Detection settings and follow any available setup or opt-in prompts; consult Google’s Phone app help for current eligibility and setup guidance rather than relying on an unverified sequence of taps.
- Update the Pixel phone and the Phone by Google app.
- Update the Google Pixel Watch app on the phone and the watch’s apps through their respective update mechanisms.
- Confirm that the watch is paired to the qualifying Pixel phone and connected over Bluetooth.
- Check the phone’s Scam Detection settings and follow any prompts shown there.
- Use the phone to place or receive an English-language call in the supported region, with the watch connected.
If no watch alert appears, first check eligibility, region, language, phone settings, and Bluetooth. A missing warning alone does not prove anything about the call or the service. Google’s Pixel Watch pairing help recommends checking basics such as battery, Bluetooth, location, connectivity, and software updates when pairing is the problem. A factory reset is not a first step for a missing Scam Detection alert.
Privacy and the audible notice
Google says call Scam Detection processing happens on the phone using on-device AI, and says the call audio or transcription is not stored on the phone, sent to Google’s servers, or available to retrieve after the call. That is Google’s description of its handling, not an independent audit. Google’s Pixel safety material explains the on-device approach.

There is also an audible beep when Scam Detection starts and periodically during the call, intended to notify participants that the feature is active. Both parties may hear it. Google describes this behavior in its Phone app help.
What it cannot promise
Scam Detection is a warning aid, not a fraud guarantee. Google says it is not 100% accurate and may miss scams as tactics change. Automated classification can also flag a legitimate conversation incorrectly. A warning does not conclusively prove fraud, and the absence of a warning does not establish that a caller is genuine.
Use independent checks before acting on a request for money, passwords, one-time codes, account access, remote-control software, or an urgent transfer. Hang up and contact the organization using a number from its official website or your card or account documents—not a number supplied by the caller. Do not share verification codes or grant device access just because a caller claims to be a bank, government agency, or family member.

Is this a reason to buy or upgrade?
It is a useful extra for someone who already has a qualifying Pixel phone and wants scam warnings visible at the wrist. It is a weak reason by itself to buy a watch: both Pixel Watch 2 and 3 are listed for support, and the phone remains essential. If you own a Watch 2, the Scam Detection rollout alone does not make an upgrade to Watch 3 necessary. If you use a non-Pixel phone, live outside the stated rollout region, or need non-English call support, do not buy either watch expecting this feature to work as described.

Google’s general April 2025 Pixel Watch software-update notices were separate from the Scam Detection announcement. Those notices described staged releases and fixes, including issues involving watch-face changes, delayed notifications, and unexpectedly high step counts; they should not be treated as proof that Scam Detection was part of a particular update payload. Can a Pixel Watch with LTE detect scam calls without a Pixel phone?
No independent watch detection is described. The watch alert depends on a qualifying Pixel phone handling the call and a Bluetooth connection to the watch.
Will the watch alert work with a Pixel 8 or older?
